Abstract

Water demand is an important variable in tomato cultivation (Solanum lycopersicum L.). This study evaluates drip irrigation systems as a technological solution to address declining crop yields caused by unpredictable water availability. Drip irrigation is a highly efficient method of delivering water, achieving 80-95% efficiency because it delivers water directly to the plant's root zone. The results show that tomato plants watered through the drip system grew normally, producing wider leaves and more lateral shoots than those watered manually, which caused water stress. Drip irrigation benefits not only water quantity but also fruit quality, especially when combined with fertigation, which can increase vitamin C and lycopene content. This irrigation method also serves as an adaptive strategy to climate change and supports Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA). The use of soil moisture sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technology can automate the drip irrigation system, ensuring water is applied according to the specific needs of the plants and saving up to 50% of water. Thus, drip irrigation is an effective technology for achieving stable and sustainable crop productivity.

Abstract

Transpiration is an essential physiological process that plays a role in maintaining plant water balance, leaf temperature, and nutrient transport. This review aims to analyze the effects of light intensity and temperature on transpiration rates and to understand their interaction in regulating stomatal activity. The study employed a literature review method by examining 30 articles obtained from Google Scholar and ResearchGate published between 2015 and 2025. The findings indicate that increasing light intensity promotes stomatal opening and raises leaf temperature, thereby accelerating water loss. Higher temperatures also increase the vapor pressure gradient between leaf tissues and the atmosphere, resulting in greater transpiration rates. However, excessively high temperatures can trigger stomatal closure as a response to heat stress. The interaction between light and temperature determines the balance between evaporation and plant protection. Microclimate management through shading, protective structures, and environmental regulation is therefore necessary to maintain water-use efficiency and support optimal plant growth and productivity under various cultivation conditions, particularly in hot tropical regions.

Abstract

This study examines and synthesizes the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the photosynthetic performance of various hydroponic crops through a literature review. We analyzed 30 scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025 to compare the responses of several plant species, including water spinach, mustard greens, lettuce, spinach, and tomato, to variations in temperature and light duration. The synthesis shows that each crop has distinct optimum temperature ranges: water spinach at 27–30°C, mustard greens up to 35°C, lettuce at 15–25°C, spinach at 27–35°C, and tomato at 24–28°C, with higher temperature tolerance under specific conditions. Photoperiod also significantly affects photosynthetic rates, with optimum ranges observed at 10–24 hours of light for water spinach, 14–18 hours for mustard greens, 14–16 hours for lettuce, 12–14 hours for spinach, and 16–20 hours for tomato. Overall, the combination of appropriate temperature and light duration enhances photosynthetic activity and plant productivity. These findings highlight the importance of precise environmental regulation in hydroponic cultivation systems to achieve optimal plant growth and yield.
