Abstract

This article examines the origin of the political consciousness of Muhammadiyah. Thus, the paper aims to investigate the origin of the political consciousness of Muhammadiyah to be a reference for Muhammadiyah’s elites, functionaries, cadres, and members in the way of thinking and behaving, mainly in the context of political affairs. Methodologically, this article is qualitative research by applying two techniques in data-gathering: documentary and interview. The finding demonstrates that the origin of political consciousness of Muhammadiyah can be traced back into a fourfold thing: the influence of the Islamic reformist idea mainly coming from the middle east, the awareness of liberation from backwardness, the awareness of liberation from colonization, and the awareness of liberation from the Christian penetration.

Abstract

This paper examines the motives of the independent volunter’s support toward the electability of Prabowo-Sandi in the 2019 presidential election. There three motives which will be used as the indicators: incentive-material motive, incentive-solidarity motive, and incentive-idealism motive. The Indonesian Millennial Movement (GMI) is being the selected case of the research because this organization is one of the active independent movements among millennials which campaigns for the  electability of Prabowo-Sandi to the public in Yogyakarta Special Region. It is a qualitative research by applying the case study approach to find out the motives of GMI’s support in winning Prabowo-Sandi in the 2019 presidential election. Documentary and in-depth interview were utilized as the data-gathering. The finding demonstrates that GMI combines all three motives in supporting the candidate. Thus, GMI had a mix incentive motive as its strategy to support Prabowo-Sandi. Nonetheless, incentive-solidarity motive was the most frequently applied by GMI among other motives.

Abstract

This article examines the campaign strategy of the National Democrat Party (Nasdem) in Indonesia’s 2019 legislative election. Nasdem was selected as the research object because Nasdem as a new party succeeded in political campaigns in the 2019 election and was the party that experienced the highest increase in vote from previous elections compared to the other parties. Commonly, new parties cannot succeed in reaching the parliamentary threshold. However, it is not applied for Nasdem. While most surveys predicted that Nasdem would not succeed in passing the 4 percent of the parliamentary threshold, the party proved that they were being the big five-party in the 2019 election. Theoretically, the Nasdem campaign strategy is analyzed with four mix marketing indicators so-called as 4P, namely product, price, place, and promotion, This research is a qualitative research, using the case study approach. In data-gathering, it employs a documentary study by collecting news of online mass media. The research finding demonstrates that among four mix marketing indicators to assess the Nasdem campaign strategy, price is the most influential indicator which affects the triumph of Nasdem in the 2019 legislative election, primarily the image price symbolized by the robust personality of Surya Paloh. In addition to that, the Nasdem image as the Jokowi true believer also strengthens the high popular vote of Nasdem in the 2019 legislative election.

Abstract

This article examines the factors that led to Agus Sulistiyono's defeat in the 2019 Legislative Elections in the DIY electoral district. These factors are seen with three-dimensional indicators of the power cube theory: visible power, hidden power, and invisible power. Methodologically, this article is the result of qualitative research with a case study approach. In data collection, the results of interviews are the main source to determine the factors that influence the defeat of candidates. This finding shows that there are three indicators. First, visible power which includes the campaign strategy carried out by Agus Sulistiyono using the party constitution route spreads throughout Yogyakarta and synergizes with DPRD candidates from the same party. Second, on the hidden power indicator, by obtaining support from the supporting political parties, as well as money politics practices. Third, there is support from religious leaders. Of the three indicators, visible and hidden power is the most dominant indicator that led to the defeat of Agus Sulistiyono in the 2019 Legislative Election in the DIY Electoral District.

Abstract

The issue of the Jokowi political dynasty is a trending topic in the 2024 presidential election. Media reporting tends to lead to negative reporting, so researchers differentiate between positive, neutral, and negative framing from the various sources selected. This research aims to look at media framing in providing a view of the politics of the Jokowi dynasty in the 2024 presidential election. The method used is a literature review analysis approach with data sources from news media Antara.news, Kompas.com, and Suara.com. The analysis tools used in this research are Vosviewers and Nvivo 12 Plus. This study found that President Jokowi also provided support to his sons Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Anwar Usman, as chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK), was proven to have violated ethics by giving a decision regarding the age limit for candidacy. This can be the basis for future research in building perspectives and uncovering complexities.

Abstract

This article examines the determining factors inducing the decreasing votes of two renowned political parties in Indonesia: The Democrat Party (PD) and the People Conscience Party (Hanura). As the ruling party in the 2009 election, the PD’s votes declined dramatically in the two following elections. Meanwhile, Hanura failed to exceed the parliamentary threshold in 2019. Methodologically, it is qualitative research by utilizing a comparative case approach. To gather data, this study employed in-depth interviews and documentary analysis and strengthened by NVivo 12plus platform by using Crosstab Query and Wordcloud Analysis to visualize data. By applying the party change indicators developed by Harmel and Janda, the findings revealed that leadership change was the most influential factor toward the poor performance of both parties in the electoral competition. Such leadership change caused a detrimental conflict and changed a dominant faction inside the party. More specifically, the corruption case behaved by the PD’s politicians aggravated the party charm, and the parliamentary threshold was a supporting aspect of the thrown out of Hanura from the parliament.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see the phenomenon of political marketing, especially how the online mass media builds Anies Baswedan’s branding as a presidential candidate. The branding of presidential candidate serves as a phenomenon of Indonesian national politics particularly when NasDem Party declared Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate on October 3, 2022. The methodology of this study uses qualifiers, and the technique of analysis and data analysis uses Nvivo12 plus mainly in online media reporting in Indonesia (CNN, Kompas, Media Indonesia, and Detik.com).  The results of this study showed that the four media outlets were actively reporting on the nomination of Anies as a presidential candidate. The massive reporting put Anies' personal electability ahead of other political opponents. The identification is based on the analysis of content about Anies in the four online media outlets. In terms of quantity, Media Indonesia more actively reported on Anes’ candidacy than the other three media outlets. This is because of power polarization relationship in terms of ownership relationship between NasDem Party and Media Indonesia. Thus, the news frame leans towards Anies and indirectly it can be used for marketing and branding politics.

Abstract

This paper sought to examine the influence of the political education program on young voters’ perceptions in responding to a threefold issue: democracy, election, and political parties. By applying a quantitative method, this research employs a regional survey to gather data through a series of intensive training for university students with 17 to 24 in age. There are 37 questions, of which 68 valid respondents shall answer before the training (pre-test) and after the training (post-test). The finding reveals that intensive political education has an authoritative influence in transforming young voters’ perceptions of those issues. It can be proven that most young voters’ perceptions increased from pre-test to post-test. When positive perceptions reached 56.76% in the pre-test, they changed dramatically to 94.59% in the post-test. Conversely, negative perceptions declined from 43.24% in the pre-test to 5.41% in the post-test. This indicates that young voters believe in the fruitfulness and effectiveness of the political education program in constructing the way of thinking and behaving comprehensively toward those three issues. Therefore, this paper not only recommends but also strongly demands that all stakeholders organize such a political education earnestly for young voters to generate future generations who participate in consolidating the democratic fate.Artikel ini merupakan sebuah usaha mengkaji pengaruh program pendidikan politik terhadap persepsi pemilih pemula dalam merespon tiga isu, yaitu demokrasi, pemilu, dan partai politik. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kuantitatif, studi ini menggunakan teknik survei yang dilakukan secara regional untuk mengumpulkan data melalui serangkaian pelatihan yang intensif terhadap mahasiswa dengan usia antara 17 dan 24 tahun. Ada 37 pertanyaan di mana 68 responden yang valid harus menjawab sebelum pelatihan (pre-test) dan setelah pelatihan (post-test). Temuan studi ini menunjukkan, bahwa program pendidikan politik yang dilakukan secara intensif memiliki pengaruh yang luar biasa dalam merubah persepsi pemilih pemula terhadap tiga isu tersebut. Ini dibuktikan dengan hasil survei, bahwa mayoritas persepsi responden mengalami peningkatan dari saat pre-test ke post-test. Ketika persepsi positif hanya di prosentase 56,76% saat pre-test, persepsi tersebut meningkat tajam ke prosentase 94,59% saat post-test. Sebaliknya, persepsi negatif turun dari prosentase 43,24% saat pre-test ke prosentase 5,41% saat post-test. Hal ini menunjukkan kenyataan, bahwa pemilih pemula yakin terhadap keberhasilan dan efektivitas program pendidikan politik dalam membentuk cara berfikir dan bertindak yang komprehensif terhadap tiga isu tersebut. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini tidak hanya merekomendasikan tetapi juga meminta secara kuat terhadap sejumlah pihak yang terkait untuk menyelenggarakan program pendidikan politik secara serius terhadap para pemilih pemula agar dapat melahirkan generasi masa depan yang memiliki komitmen untuk mengonsolidasikan nasib demokrasi.

Abstract

The discourse on the policy of a three-term presidential term raises pros and cons in the political circles of the government and the people of Indonesia. The narrative can be seen through the opinions of policy actors, government, political parties, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the community. This study uses a method with a Q-DAS (Qualitative Data Analysis Software) approach. The data in the study were taken through four national online news media with a high level of credibility. This research will conduct a study using the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) which can explain the structure of the political narrative in the policy-making process of changing the President's term of office. This study aims to examine the role of the media in shaping public narratives in formulating policies for the Presidential General Election in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that the votes in the group that is against the narrative of the presidential term policy are more dominant for three periods. President Joko Widodo's firm refusal was able to influence the intensity of the discussion on the policy to increase the President's term of office.Wacana kebijakan masa jabatan presiden tiga periode menimbulkan pro dan kontra di kalangan politik pemerintah dan masyarakat Indonesia. Narasi tersebut dapat dilihat melalui pendapat dari aktor-aktor kebijakan, pemerintah, partai politik, Lembaga Swadaya Masyarakat (LSM), dan masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode dengan pendekatan Q-DAS (Qualitative Data Analysis Software). Data pada penelitian diambil melalui empat media berita online nasional dengan tingkat kredibilitas yang tinggi. Penelitian ini akan melakukan studi menggunakan Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) yang dapat menjelaskan bagaimana struktur narasi politik pada proses pembuatan kebijakan perubahan masa jabatan Presiden. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat peran media dalam membentuk narasi publik dalam penyusunan kebijakan Pemilihan Umum Presiden di Indonesia. Hasil pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa suara pada kelompok yang kontra terhadap narasi kebijakan masa jabatan presiden menjadi tiga periode lebih dominan. Penolakan secara tegas yang disampaikan oleh Presiden Joko Widodo mampu mempengaruhi intensitas pembahasan wacana kebijakan penambahan masa jabatan Presiden.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas motif politik di balik dukungan Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) dalam Pilkada Kepulauan Sula tahun 2020, dengan fokus pada faktor yang mempengaruhi keputusan partai dalam memberikan rekomendasi kepada Hendrata Thes-Umar Umabaihi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi motif utama yang melatarbelakangi dukungan politik PAN serta melihat bagaimana dinamika internal partai dalam proses pengambilan keputusan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif, di mana data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dengan pengurus partai dan dianalisis menggunakan perangkat lunak Nvivo 12 Plus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa motif insentif material, terutama dalam bentuk mahar politik, menjadi faktor dominan dalam keputusan PAN, sementara motif solidaritas dan idealisme memiliki pengaruh yang lebih kecil. Selain itu, keputusan dukungan lebih banyak ditentukan oleh Dewan Pimpinan Pusat (DPP) daripada Dewan Pimpinan Cabang (DPC), sehingga aspirasi masyarakat lokal kurang diperhitungkan. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa pragmatisme politik masih menjadi realitas dalam proses politik elektoral di Indonesia, di mana kepentingan strategis partai lebih diutamakan dibandingkan dengan kualitas kepemimpinan calon dan aspirasi pemilih.
