Abstract

This research investigates the influence of social media on public opinion in Indonesia, with a focus on the 2024 general election. As of January 2023, Indonesia has 167 million active social media users or 60.4% of the total population. This study highlights how platforms such as Twitter can spread hate speech, causing social tension, psychological distress, and even physical violence, especially against minority groups. This rapid spread of misinformation and hate speech threatens the democratic process, impacting voter behaviour and trust in institutions. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research explores user experiences, identifying forms of hate speech such as defamation and incitement. The findings emphasise the need for stricter law enforcement, public education on tolerance, and ethical political campaigns. While social media enhances political engagement, it requires robust measures to prevent abuse and ensure election integrity and social cohesion.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to investigate strategies of Southeast Asian local governments in addressing the COVID-19 situation by applying the framework of good governance principles and, in turn, to figure out the determinant factor of the successful strategy in each country. It is qualitative research by applying multiple cases of three cities in Southeast Asian countries, i.e., Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. For data gathering, it takes relevant sources of News channels, whether in English or local languages of those countries. The finding demonstrates that Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand can adopt all principles of good governance in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Nevertheless, each country has its determinant factor of the successful strategy in handling a such situation. Indonesia is more excellent in the implementation of transparency, Malaysia has a well performance in the operation of participation, while Thailand is more successful in the application of accountability. These depict that each state has a typical strategy in coping with this global pandemic situation.

Abstract

This paper is going to examine the pro and contra among the Electoral Management Bodies’ (EMBs) commissioners and political parties’ functionaries in responding to the parliamentary threshold issue. Methodologically, this paper is based on qualitative research by utilizing a multiple case approach. It is supported by employing Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Q-DAS), namely NVivo 12Plus to analyse the data written in the transcript of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the EMBs’ commissioners and politicians in six provinces and nine cities/counties. The finding demonstrates that the all actors agree to adopt the parliamentary threshold in the national legislative election. Afterward, the mind map contains distinctive issues among EMBs and politicians. Thus, the parliamentary threshold is still required to strengthen the consolidation of Indonesian democracy. Such a threshold is also an essential standard to encourage well institutionalized parties and to modernize them. Thus, four percent of the parliamentary threshold is an ideal model. Subsequently, the increase of the parliamentary threshold percentage is no needed anymore. In addition to that, it is not applied in the regional legislative election.

Abstract

Abstract: This article examines the campaign strategy of the Islamist party, namely PKS in the 2019 legislative election. It is fascinating to be investigated further because this party can ward a lot of predictions and surveys which stated that PKS could not exceed the parliamentary threshold of four percent. PKS has an outstanding performance and can reach 8.62 percent. Methodologically, this study is a qualitative research by applying the case study approach. For data-gathering, this study collects data and information through social media such as news channels and social networking sites. In the analysis process, this uses the mix marketing theory consisting of four Ps (4P), i.e., product, price, place, and promotion. On the product, PKS promotes four main programs: reinforcing the realization of the driving license for the long-life term, removing the motorcycle tax, protecting Muslim scholars, and removing the wage tax for eight billion IDR per month. Concerning the price, PKS spent roughly 150 Billion IDR. On the place or distribution, the PKS’ legislative candidates did socialize to the grass-root with various activities. Meanwhile, regarding the promotion, PKS promotes itself through event publications and social media conducted by its cadres and devotees. The most significant strategy which affects to the increase of PKS’ vote in 2019 is the promotion mainly the event publication with roadside flashmob activities. Indeed, the cadres and devotees’ loyalty has a significant role as the vote-getters in mobilizing electorate. Penelitian ini menarik dilakukan karena keberhasilan PKS dalam menepis asumsi berbagai lembaga survei yang memprediksi PKS tidak lolos ambang batas parlemen. PKS berhasil meningkatan suaranya hingga di 8,62 persen. Secara metodologis, artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif dengan penggalian sumber data dari berbagai berita terpercaya di media massa online. Sebagai kerangka analisa, penelitian ini menggunakan teori mix marketing (4P) yang terdiri dari empat indikator: produk, harga, penempatan/distribusi, dan promosi. Pada indikator produk, PKS menjual empat program unggulan: pemberlakuan SIM seumur hidup, pembebasan pajak bermotor, perlindungan ulama, tokoh agama dan simbol agama, pembebasan pajak penghasilan di bawah Rp. 8 juta. Pada indikator harga, PKS mengeluarkan biaya kurang lebih Rp. 150 Milyar. Pada indikator penempatan, para caleg melakukan sosialisasi melalui beragam kegiatan. Sementara itu, pada indikator promosi, PKS melakukan kegiatan flashmob dan disebarluaskan melalui media sosial. Dari empat indikator tersebut, PKS lebih menekankan pada strategi promosi melalui publikasi even terutama kegiatan flashmob di pinggir jalan berkat loyalitas kader dan simpatisan PKS sebagai motor penggerak sekaligus pengepul suara partai di Pemilu 2019.Kata Kunci: Strategi Kampanye, PKS, Pileg, Flashmob

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji tentang dinamika pemberlakuan peraturan daerah yang bernuansa Islam pasca runtuhnya Orde Baru tahun 1998. Secara spesifik, kajian ini mencoba menginvestigasi tentang motif politik atas munculnya surat edaran walikota Malang tentang himbauan pelaksanaan shalat berjamaah bagi aparatur sipil negara di Kota Malang pada tahun 2016. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi terbitnya surat edaran Walikota Malang tentang himbauan shalat berjamaah bagi aparatur sipil negara di Kota Malang. Selain itu untuk mengetahui informasi tujuan personal Walikota tersebut. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Kota Malang diambil sebagai kasus yang akan ditelaah secara lebih mendalam. Wawancara mendalam (in-depth interview) dan dokumentasi adalah dua teknik yang digunakan sebagai bagian dari proses pengumpulan data untuk memperkuat analisa dan pembahasan. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa faktor yang melatarbelakangi Walikota Malang dalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebut terdapat dua indikator yang kurang mempengaruhi motif Walikota Malangdalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebutantara lain: riwayat pendidikan dan pekerjaan. Sedangkan dua indikator lainnya yaitu relasi atau pergaulan dan faktor organisasi mempengaruhi motif Walikota Malangdalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebut

Abstract

Muhammadiyah sebagai organisasi Islam modernis terbesar di Indonesia memiliki peran strategis dalam dinamika sosial-politik kebangsaan. Menjelang Pemilihan Kepala Daerah (Pilkada) Serentak 2024, peran ini semakin krusial terutama di Sulawesi yang memiliki keragaman sosial-budaya dan kompleksitas politik yang tinggi. Karena itu, penguatan kapasitas kepemimpinan bagi pimpinan Muhammadiyah se-Sulawesi menjadi kebutuhan mendesak dalam menghadapi tantangan politik lokal. Dalam hal ini, intensifikasi ideologi politik dan pengembangan kapasitas kepemimpinan serta mampu menjawab tantangan lokal menjadi kunci penting. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR) dengan tujuan untuk memberdayakan masyarakat, khususnya pimpinan Muhammadiyah di kawasan PulauSulawesi. Program ini melibatkan berbagai kegiatan seperti Focus Group Discussion (FGD) dan Pelatihan Ideologi Kepemimpinan Nasional (PIKNAS). Hasil dari pelaksanaan pengabdian ini meliputi pengembangan keterampilan kepemimpinan, komunikasi efektif, pemecahan masalah, pengambilan keputusan, dan penguatan jaringan antar-peserta. Selain itu, program ini juga menghasilkan deklarasi yang menekankan pentingnya partisipasi politik kader Muhammadiyah pada Pilkada 2024 dengan dukungan terhadap integritas, pendidikan politik yang berkeadaban, serta upaya untuk mengelola politik dan kebijakan publik yang bermanfaat bagi umat. Keberhasilan program ini diharapkan dapat memperkuat peran Muhammadiyah dalam politik praktis sesuai dengan nilai-nilai yang diajarkan dalam organisasi dan mendukung pembangunan demokrasi yang lebih berkualitas.

Abstract

This article aims to discover the factors causing the decline in voter participation in the 2024 simultaneous regional elections in the Bantul district. The problem in this study is due to a decrease in the voter participation rate in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Head Election (Pilkada) in Bantul Regency, where the participation rate in 2020 is 80.32% and in 2024 at 75.96%. In this case, a theoretical reference from Ramlan Surbakti about Political Participation is used. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach in the 2024 Bantul regent and deputy regent elections. With data collection techniques through interviews and documentation. Based on the results of the research. This shows that most people have a negative view of the Government's performance and do not have reasonable expectations of all candidates; this is also due to the lack of direct socialization to the public from each candidate to maximize the existing campaign period. However, the following two factors also affect the decline in voter participation: the situation and political instability. One factor that does not affect is social and economic status.

Abstract

Selain itu untuk mengetahui informasi tujuan personal Walikota tersebut. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Kota Malang diambil sebagai kasus yang akan ditelaah secara lebih mendalam. Wawancara mendalam (in-depth interview) dan dokumentasi adalah dua teknik yang digunakan sebagai bagian dari proses pengumpulan data untuk memperkuat analisa dan pembahasan. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa faktor yang melatarbelakangi Walikota Malang dalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebut terdapat dua indikator yang kurang mempengaruhi motif Walikota Malangdalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebutantara lain: riwayat pendidikan dan pekerjaan. Sedangkan dua indikator lainnya yaitu relasi atau pergaulan dan faktor organisasi mempengaruhi motif Walikota Malangdalam menerbitkan surat edaran tersebut

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, as Indonesia’s largest Islamic reformist force, has survived for more than a century coping with political challenges. It is irresistible to further investigate its political identity through the inquiry of historical consciousness. This paper examines the formation, structure, and fate of the political consciousness of Muhammadiyah. Formation represents the past, structure indicates the present, and fate denotes the future. The findings demonstrate that the formation commenced from 1912 to 2020, splitting into two gradual phases: individual consciousness (1912-1971) and institutional consciousness (1971-2020). This trajectory has resulted in two structures of political reasoning in Muhammadiyah: scripturalist-rationalist as the dominant school and substantial-pragmatist as the marginalized one. Meanwhile, the politics of Muhammadiyah in the future will no longer involve instituting a political party. Instead, it is establishing centers of excellence to engineer political strategies and preserve actions operated by the “Muhammadiyah Caucus.”
