Abstract

Learner Autonomy is a dynamic process in which learners take an active role and are responsible for their learning. Nowadays, teachers and learners are using technology in online classrooms due to the pandemic situation during which learner autonomy can play critical roles. However, studies investigating teachers’ beliefs in fostering learner autonomy by utilizing technology in online classrooms remain sparse. To fill this gap, this qualitative study explored the teachers' beliefs in fostering learner autonomy by using technology in online classrooms. Drawing on the data garnered from online questionnaires and open-ended questions that involved 48 English teachers from various levels of education in Central Kalimantan with different teaching experience and education degrees, it was found that the teachers deployed various technological tools, which helped them foster learner autonomy in online classrooms.

Abstract

The study aims to explore three novice teachers' perception towards English native-speakerism for the exploration of English as an International Language (EIL). The concern towards English native-speakerism, preferring the English variations from its native background, in the practice of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has become the central issue, especially in Indonesia. It is not aligned with the idea of EIL which foster the process of producing competent users of English through the inclusion of local cultural-based items. The case study design will be utilized in the research using the pre-interview, document analysis, and post-interview as the instrument for data collection of novice teachers' perception of local and nativized exposure. The study discovers that all collaborated novice teachers set an agreement to support the local cultural-based inclusion in practice yet support the inclusion of standardized English for teaching pattern and pronunciation. The findings show how the teachers have acknowledged the inclusion of local exposure to maximize the endeavor for students to be competent users of English. The discussion still relies on making the local cultural-based items in teaching practices viable and proposes Englishes in the teaching to lessen the native-speakerism.

Abstract

The degradation of morals among Indonesian young generation and the urgency of teaching both good competencies and strong characters to succeed in the 21st-century globally competitive society for them require all teachers including English teachers to incorporate character values into their classroom instructions as mandated in the 2013 curriculum. Given the fundamental roles teachers could serve in the success of promoting good character both outside and inside the classroom, it is critical to understand how they view such a program before they could bring it into the classroom. This qualitative case study scrutinizes how Indonesian English teachers perceive character education incorporation. Employing an interview, classroom observation, and lesson plan analysis, to two purposefully-selected English teachers from two different piloting schools, findings reveal that while they agree on the pivotal role they could serve toward students’ character development, they also emphasize the enhancement of some other factors, such as inspiring teachers, family, good leadership, the cohesiveness of school community members, media, and government supports for the success of character education reinforcement program in Indonesia.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes in the education field – including the way teachers and students interact in the classroom. As a result, it is considered important for the Indonesian EFL teachers to explore and address this issue to make them familiar with the current pattern of interaction in the online classroom. With that knowledge, making the online teaching and learning effective is achievable. Even though a lot of studies have been conducted on similar topic, this study propose a different analysis by adapting the most prevalent framework in this topic – Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS) – into more focused categories for better understanding. This case study aimed at exploring the interaction in an online EFL classroom by utilizing FIACS as the main framework.  The necessary data was collected through non-participant observation, with an English teacher and her seven grade students as the participants. The results of this study show that the online EFL classroom interaction was dominated by the teacher. It was caused by several reasons namely the passiveness of the students that led to more talking from the teacher and technological glitches. It caused the online meetings to be teacher-centered. As the teaching and learning medium changed, the pattern and characteristics of the interaction became unique. One of the notable uniqueness was the difficulty to oversee the online interactions between students.

Abstract

Literature is often considered as a form of human expression and experiences. A topic regarding an individual’s experience through their life, including how they face the world around them can be found in a novel written by Osamu Dazai, No Longer Human (1948). Every individual has two sides of personality which can be referred as the Persona and the Shadow. This study focused on identifying and analysing the Persona and the Shadow of Yozo, the main character of No Longer Human. The study was conducted to answer the research questions of how the Persona and the Shadow are portrayed by the characterization of Oba Yozo from No Longer Human. Using Jung’s theory and structuralism, this study found that Yozo’s Persona and Shadow are two opposite personalities and they grow along with him throughout his childhood to adulthood. However, as he gets older, he goes through individuation crisis where the Shadow in him becomes stronger than his Persona. This study is hoped to give a new insight regarding how an individual has two sides of personality and also how an individual goes through individuation crisis. In addition, this study is expected to raise suicidal awareness which now becomes a growing concern in society.
