Abstract

As one of the pedagogical approaches, TBLT has been employed by both researchers and practitioners to develop students’ language skills in the last decades. Besides solid grounding theory that possessed, it demands the students to participate actively as well during the class. Its’ flexibility gives the teacher more freedom to integrate it into their teaching. However, only a few studies have been conducted in terms of integration or modification. The current study aimed at developing a framework inspired by TBLT to enhance students' speaking performances. It examines the effect of TBLT modification in the context of EFL in Indonesia, particularly speaking. It is a mixed method study where students (n-91) from two universities in Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia participated. Two instruments were used for data collection, tests, and a questionnaire. The result shows that the framework inspired-TBLT could enhance students' speaking performances. It can be seen from the result of speaking proficiency where the average of the post-test (9,67) was higher than pre-test (8.19). In addition, statistically, the value Sig. two-tailed was 0.042 or < 0.05. It means that this framework influences students’ speaking performance almost in all components that were tested (vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation). Furthermore, in terms of students’ perception, this framework has received positive responses from the students since this framework engaged and demanded the students to get involved during class activities.

Abstract

Research on English creative writing has been carried out by many researchers both in Indonesia and outside Indonesia by considering how important creative writing is for learning literature in general and learning English in particular. Likewise, research on Indonesia’s super-diversity. However, research on English creative writing using Indonesian superdiversity as a learning source is still very little. Therefore, this qualitative descriptive method research is conducted. This study aims to explore benefits of teaching of creative writing utilizing Indonesia’s superdiversity as a source of learning. To achieve the aim, a questionnaire and document of students' artifacts are employed as research instruments. 59 participants from Creative Writing Language Education: Poetry class are involved; they are convenient and purposive samples. The result  showed that almost all participants are very interested in learning about and making creative patterned poetry utilizing Indonesia’s super-diversity because of its many benefits. Abstract

Teaching English as Foreign Language to Indonesian students encourages teachers to motivate them in their language study by getting them to engage in successful writing and speaking skills. It can be early learning as relevant as possible to their language use needs. Based on a qualitative design, this study investigated the way an English teacher of eleventh-grade students used an integrated skills approach to teaching writing and speaking in the classroom.  The research was conducted at one of the senior high schools in West Java, Indonesia with a qualitative method to explore deep information about the strategies and challenges encountered by the English teacher when she was teaching. The specific strategy revealed that the teacher organized activities and encouraged the students through Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) including other strategies to overcome the challenges such as providing consultation and providing learning at night as an extra class. This study is expected to chronicle the need for this approach to be incorporated by English teachers in secondary schools to improve English teaching strategy today and future.

Abstract

The framework underpinning the Speech Acts theory developed by Searle (1979) examining the headlines of one online International news advocating the never-ending conflict of Palestine-Israel becomes a fundamental analysis of this research. The qualitative case study is presented by 26 selected headlines (ranging from 6 to 13 words) from BBC News distinguished with the world–Middle East section of the Gaza and Israel war. This covers the headline from October 2023 to January 2024. The document analysis through the written texts of headlines was the main data. The research shows that there are four of five categories of speech acts found in this research, calculating “assertive” and “commisive” as both the largest and the least frequent models under the main framework of the Searle model. The pragmatics analysis is also integrated which presents five different types of implications including the involvement of external actors, statistics of released hostages, casualties of the war, Benjamin Netanyahu's point of view, and the war condition.

Abstract

The phrase "digital native," which is used almost universally to describe the use of technology by today's teachers and students, is laden with debate both regarding its meaning and how it should be measured. The Digital Natives Assessment Scale (DNAS) was established, developed, and validated to assess "digital nativeness." This study contributes to the ongoing dispute regarding the validity of the DNAS, which Wilson (2020) had previously reported in the literature. Seventy-eight Indonesian secondary school teachers joined the survey and two of the respondents were invited to join the semi-structured interview. The findings of the study provided the data for the examination of how the DNAS addresses the factors that contribute to digital nativeness. The results from the DNAS corroborated Wilson's claim that the DNAS may not address the features of digital natives. This study recommends that future research in the realm of educational technology and beyond should concentrate on different ways of conceiving the concept of digital natives.

Abstract

Contributed by many factors, teachers’ identity, particularly among novice teachers, is essential since it affects their teaching practice and professional career. This study explored different influences that contributed to the construction of novice Indonesian teachers of English who apparently faced challenges in constructing their identity. This narrative inquiry study involved two novice English teachers of Primary and Senior High Schools in East and West Bandung with one and a half years of teaching experience. Data from in-depth interviews and journal writing were analyzed by Creswell’s (2014) thematic analysis. The study figured out that negotiating with school context and understanding oneself were the factors that influenced novice teachers’ identity construction. Negotiating with the school context shows that the novice teachers interacted with the school context and made some adjustments to their teacher identity. Understanding oneself refers to the meaning-making process of themselves as a person and a teacher. This study also found that novice teachers had some negotiations about their idealism and the school’s current practices. One of the participants became more eager to reflect her idealism in her practice, while the other tried to let go of her idealism and adjust with her students. This study suggested that novice teachers should do continuous reflections on their teaching practices and themselves as teachers to help them develop as professionals.

Abstract

Research on classroom discussions and dialogues is well-established, however, studies on how classroom dialogue is facilitated in online classrooms remain underexplored. This qualitative case study addresses this gap by examining the experiences of an EFL teacher educator and her 16 students during a twelve-week enacting dialogic pedagogy mediated by Microsoft Teams (MT). Utilizing thematic analysis from thirteen video recordings, four discussion forums, three series of teacher interviews, student feedback, and researchers' observations, the study revealed that the classroom dialogue was facilitated in MT by structuring the online environment, enhancing synchronous video conferencing through ‘meet now,’ extending dialogue through chat-based learning in ‘channel,’ and enriching interaction with multimodal cues. The study suggests that while digital technologies can enhance dialogic activities, it is crucial for teachers and students to enhance and maintain their dialogic stance and digital competence in online classrooms.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the learning resources that are employed in a language center at Indonesia's oldest university both for local and international foreign students. The study uses descriptive qualitative as the main approach through interviews with an English teacher coordinator and learning resources documentation analysis. The interview data and documents were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that there is consideration of both types of classes in the same class, the study findings indicate that the instructional materials used for them are typically similar. Teachers still face difficulties since international students must attend classrooms where the bulk of the students speak Indonesian even though they still struggle to understand the language. In addition, this Pre-Intermediate program makes use of digital instructional resources. This is done since textbook-based teaching materials are viewed as being out of date and becoming less and less relevant to modern advancements. To help teachers improve their lesson plans and make them more relevant in the future, it is believed that the research's findings would be useful as evaluation material.
