Abstract

With the rise of globalization, digitization, and the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution, meaning-making modes are now increasingly multimodal in which written linguistics modes of meaning interface with oral, visual, audio, gestural, tactile, and spatial patterns of meaning. In the EFL context, this situation unavoidably urges changes in the goal of English language teaching to include multimodal communicative competence. In response to such challenges, multiliteracies pedagogy offers plausible solutions. In a multiliteracies classroom, students are supported through a pedagogy that provides them with ample opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills to multimodally examine diverse information sources and content, critically explore the information, and become active meaning-makers and effective communicators. This study aims at investigating the implementation of multiliteracies pedagogy in English language teaching to foster students’ multimodal communicative competence. This is a qualitative case study involving twenty students of the English language department of IAIN Curup. The data of the study are gained through observation, interviews, and students’ artefacts.  The data collected from these instruments were examined qualitatively using thematic and categorical coding. The result of this study demonstrates the enactment of multiliteracies pedagogy can develop five competences of multimodal communicative competence: linguistic competence, sociocultural competence, interactional competence, discourse competence, and multimodal competence. Meanwhile the other two competences, strategic competence and formulaic competence, are somewhat hindered due to lack of exposure to authentic English language.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of management turnover on auditor switching, with financial distress as a moderating variable. The research employs panel least squares regression on a sample of firms, analyzing the direct and interaction effects between management turnover and financial distress. The findings reveal that management turnover has a significant positive effect on auditor switching, and this relationship is further strengthened when financial distress is present. The moderating role of financial distress highlights its importance in amplifying the likelihood of auditor switching during leadership transitions. The study concludes that organizations experiencing both management turnover and financial distress are more prone to auditor changes, underscoring the interplay between leadership dynamics and financial conditions. Limitations related to sample scope and reliance on secondary data are acknowledged, and future research is encouraged to explore broader contexts and incorporate additional variables such as corporate governance and regulatory influences.

Nevertheless, interacting effectively via this platform might be challenging for messages communicated to this platform might have more than one meaning that is likely to result in misunderstanding among the users. Thus, understanding deixis, known as one of the interactional phenomena in which language and context can be figured out, is invaluable. Nevertheless, to the best of the writers’ knowledge, studies concerning the use of deixis with respect to WhatsApp for English online learning are still left under-researched. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the deixis employed during online learning via a WhatsApp group. The method utilized in this research was a descriptive study. Besides, the participants comprised 23 postgraduate students and an instructor from an English Education Study Program of one university in Bandung city. The data were taken from the artefact in the form of an online chat archive.  Based on the data analyzed, the findings revealed that all the types of deixis encompassing personal, social, discourse, place, and time deixis were found in online learning through the WhatsApp application. In this regard, the person(al) deixis (46%) was the most frequently used deixis, followed by social (39%), discourse (8%), place (5%), and time deixis (2%), respectively. Moreover, the appropriate and effective use of deixis by the instructor was found to influence students’ engagement and critical thinking ability. Besides, the WhatsApp feature, emojis, was found to be utilized along with the deixis, as well as it assists in providing some emphasis, understanding of the messages conveyed, and showing respect or compliment among the participants.

Abstract

Despite the growing research demonstrating the changing role of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in todays globalized world, few studies in Indonesia have examined how learners perceive English language teaching (ELT) materials in relation to ELF. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study investigates learners attitudes toward the current ELT business materials in light of ELF at a private university in Jakarta. A total of 382 respondents filled out online questionnaires, and 10 of them participated in semi-structured group interviews. The descriptive statistics analysis of the quantitative data demonstrated that the participants perceived that the materials incorporated Indonesian English and other non-native varieties of English, 88.4% and 55.2%, respectively. Regarding cultural representations, over 90% of the participants believed that the learning materials raised their awareness of cultural differences between native and non-native English speakers. Additionally, over 70% of the participants believed that the business scenarios in the materials included diverse linguacultural groups. Nevertheless, the thematic analysis of the qualitative results showed learners negative attitudes toward such materials due to their favoritism toward standard English norms and their regard for these as authentic instances of English in business contexts. Despite the limited scope of this study, the findings indicate that the exposure to ELF-informed materials needs to be accompanied by the provision of awareness-raising tasks which utilize the noticing strategy to allow learners to pay attention to different language functions, features, and varieties in authentic spoken and written texts produced within ELF business settings.

Abstract

As a popular and important field in pragmatic study, deixis has been largely investigated by many researchers across disciplines and in various types of discourse. However, its use in Islamic discourse focusing on comparative religion is rarely explored. Therefore, this study examined deictic expressions used in Islamic public oration by a famous scholar. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, it aims to find out the main types of deixis, focusing on the analysis of the frequency, what they refer to, & the functions. The data were gained from a corpus of three recorded preaching sessions available online on YouTube. The findings showed that personal deixis becomes the most dominant type, followed by spatial and temporal deixis. Personal deixis mainly worked to refer to the addressee & to engage the addressee in the discourse. It also referred to the preacher as a form of revealing his identity. Then, spatial deixis functioned as a way to focus the talk to particular things and to refer to preceding or following ideas or acts. In addition, temporal deixis was primarily used to refer to present times, showing the high relevance of the discourse with current moments. This paper is hoped to provide insights regarding how deixis serves various crucial functions in preaching and how it facilitates the speaker to persuade the addressee to the explanations given. Hence, the results of this study could inform those who aspire to be a better speaker by practicing using deictic expressions more properly to sound more convincing.
