Abstract

Volunteer group is one of the associations of community's political articulation in the electoral moment. By campaigning independence, non-partisan in nature, and moving in a collective way are proven able to make the volunteer group as an alternative actor and significant political force in mobilizing support and voice. Volunteer group Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok) is a movement that openly declared itself as the political volunteer with political aims as an additional element in the winning of candidate pair Basuki Tjahaya Purnama (BTP) and Djarot Saiful Hidayat in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.  The appearance of Teman Ahok in the political arena of the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election is related to the BTP's populism figure. Quick changes in political escalation force Teman Ahok to change its position and political role. That fluctuation brings an important dynamic to the Teman Ahok journey. It is interesting to observe Teman Ahok activity in compile community participant and then aggregate it since it causes a public perception that is diametrically opposed at a time; supporting & not supporting. This writing will analyze the expression of Teman Ahok political voluntarism and will assess the significant benefit resulted in during the process of electoral democracy.

Abstract

Water resources management is a socio-political issue where various interests influence the policy on the protection and utilization of water resources. This research wants to know the government's policies and efforts in protecting water resources amid the rapid industrialization of tourism, along with conflicts due to the use of water resources from a political ecology perspective. This study uses descriptive qualitative research, data collection methods through depth interviews, observation, and documentation. This study shows that the efforts of the Batu City Government in realizing the protection of water resources are not proportional to the acceleration of the conversion of forest and agricultural land functions to support the sustainability of water resources due to the rapid growth of the tourism industry. It can be seen from the inconsistency of policy products, the imbalance in the amount of the budget between the commercialization of land (tourism), and the lack of efforts to conserve springs. As a result, there was resistance from the community in the struggle for access to water resources. Therefore, it is necessary to affirm the boundaries of the utilization of water resources supporting areas, transparency of the sustainability of water resources, and disclosure of information to the public regarding the process of tourism development plans undertaken by investors to facilitate supervision by the public.

Abstract

The practice of money politics at the village level has become a common phenomenon indicating a serious problem in village democratization. This study aims to conduct a comparative study of the practice of money politics that occurred in implementing village head elections in “S’ Village, Batu City, and “P” Village, Sampang Regency, East Java. Comparative studies are important because these regions have different economic, social, and community characteristics. A qualitative descriptive research method is used in this article to clarify the process of answering research questions. The data were analyzed through collection, compaction, presentation, and conclusion. The study results show that money politics in each village in the two districts is almost identical. However, in practice, the control over voters in money politics during the Village Head Elections (Pilkades) shows very strict control in the Sampang district. It is even stronger than in Batu City.

Abstract

Frequent floods and landslides in Tulungrejo Village, Batu City, require locally grounded mitigation strategies that are adaptive to the village’s ecological and social conditions. This study aims to analyze the role of local wisdom in the disaster mitigation system in Tulungrejo Village, Batu City, by emphasizing the integration of traditional knowledge, social systems, and village institutional support. The research method used is qualitative-descriptive through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results show that local wisdom-based mitigation practices are operationalized through terracing techniques, small retention basins, and adaptive land management, which function as preventive mechanisms embedded in daily agricultural activities. In addition to ecological practices, the community’s social system serves as an effective medium for risk communication, enabling rapid information exchange and collective response through informal networks and village deliberation forums. Village government support, particularly through pre-disaster budget allocation, facilitation of community forums, and integration of local knowledge into planning processes, strengthens the institutionalization of mitigation practices. The interaction between ecological knowledge, social communication, and institutional support forms a collaborative and adaptive mitigation system. However, challenges remain in the regeneration and documentation of local knowledge, which may affect the long-term sustainability of community-based mitigation.
