Abstract

There is a problem in the SLB B Yakut education report, namely that the reading skills of SLB students are still lacking. This is due to several factors, such as the implementation of the school literacy movement for deaf children at SLB B Yakut Purwokerto has not been running well, a lack of non-academic books, and teachers have not maximized learning innovations. Therefore, this community service activity aims to improve the literacy skills of SLB students, particularly those who are deaf and mute. The methods used for this community service activity include Forum Group Discussions (FGD), socialization, training, and mentoring for both teachers and SLB students. This literacy improvement activity consists of several stages, beginning with a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) between the community service team and the school, socialization of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) for SLB teachers to reactivate GLS activities, and literacy training packaged into several activities. The series of literacy training activities includes writing literacy training conducted using out-of-classroom learning methods.Furthermore, the application of technology through educational games for learning English and training in Canva for poster creation is also part of a series of literacy training activities. The service team also provides ongoing support for these activities, enabling the successful implementation of a literacy jamboree that produces various student works from the Special Education School (SLB), including poems, prose, and posters. The reading skills of SLB students have improved significantly due to the active daily participation in GLS activities, and their writing skills have also improved, as evidenced by the students' works in the form of prose, poems, and posters.

Abstract

This research delves into the subtitling strategies of expressive utterances in “The Little Mermaid (2023)”, employing a descriptive qualitative method for analyzing 40 instances of expressive utterances. The subtitling strategies identified encompass transfer (52.50%), condensation (15.00%), deletion and paraphrase (10.00% each), expansion (7.50%), and transcription (5.00%). The transfer strategy, being the most frequently used, serves as a crucial tool in enhancing the clarity of expressive utterances. The relationship between expressive and strategic types lies in the translator's deliberate selection of subtitling strategies to convey nuances and emotions inherent in each expressive type. This suggests a strategic alignment between the nature of the expressive utterance and the chosen subtitling technique. The findings emphasize the translator's nuanced decision-making process in conveying emotions effectively in subtitles. This research's unique focus on a specific film and comprehensive analysis of subtitling strategies to the understanding of film subtitle translation

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman's self-values within the Fundamental Translation course. Known as Jati Diri Unsoed, these institutional values are part of a mandatory subject for all enrolled students. The research sought to evaluate the extent to which character education at the university level has been effectively implemented. The methodology began by asking students to engage in translation tasks and address the challenges encountered during the process, thereby revealing their character traits. This also enabled the lecturer to guide students toward appropriate and thoughtful solutions. Using purposive sampling, selected students’ translations were analyzed by comparing the source and target texts and aligning them with the four core values of Jati Diri Unsoed: intelligence, honesty, strength, and caring. The analysis identified several translation challenges and the techniques employed to resolve them, including amplification, implicitation, correction, addition, and other common translation issues. The findings demonstrate that the ways students addressed these challenges reflect the values of intelligence, honesty, and caring. The study concludes that character education can be effectively integrated into various academic subjects through the application of appropriate pedagogical approaches, methods, and techniques.

Abstract

Unpacking the Multidimensional Nature of EFL Speaking Difficulties: A Holistic Framework of Learner-Centered Needs. Speaking is a critical yet challenging skill for EFL learners due to its spontaneous nature, real-time processing, and high emotional demands. This study explores the individual challenges that students face in learning to speak English and how these affect their classroom participation and language development. Objectives: The study aims to examine the challenges that students encounter while learning to speak English and how these challenges influence their classroom participation and language development. Methods: Drawing on key theories of communicative competence, the Affective Filter Hypothesis, and pragmatic competence, this research employed a qualitative descriptive design, including open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 25 university students enrolled in a speaking class. Findings: Thematic analysis revealed five interrelated dimensions of difficulty: (1) linguistic challenges, especially vocabulary and grammar limitations; (2) psychological barriers, including anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and lack of confidence; (3) the impact of classroom environment and activity design on comfort and performance; (4) learners’ topic preferences, where familiar and casual themes are favored over abstract or technical subjects; and (5) the importance of pedagogical support, such as collaborative tasks, smaller group settings, and constructive feedback. Conclusion: The findings underscore that speaking difficulties are not merely linguistic but are deeply influenced by affective and contextual factors. Students benefit most from interactive, low-pressure environments that allow gradual confidence-building. The study concludes by recommending a more student-centered approach to speaking instruction—one that acknowledges individual learner differences, promotes meaningful interaction, and fosters both communicative competence and psychological readiness. These insights can guide teachers in designing more inclusive and engaging speaking classes that empower learners to participate actively and confidently. Keywords: EFL speaking challenges, communicative competence, affective filter, classroom interaction, learner confidence.

Abstract

Abstract.  This research aims to identify the expressive speech act and its felicity condition uttered by high-profile figures. It specifically attempts to recognize the types of expressive speech act, the intended meaning of those expressive speech act types, and their felicity conditions. The qualitative method was applied to accomplish those study objectives. The data were high-profile figures’ utterances collected from covid-19 related news on an online news site (https://www.merdeka.com/).  This research focuses on the expressive speech acts since they are also known as evaluative speech acts. Moreover, analyzing expressive speech acts uttered by public figures in covid-19 related news may give insight on how the Indonesia’s government manage covid-19 cases. The results confirm that the utterances taken from that site fulfilled some types of expressive speech act, namely praising, thanking, deploring, lamenting, congratulating, and flattering. The intended meaning of those types of expressive speech act are determined by interpreting the speakers’ intention based on the context. Furthermore, the felicity condition of each expressive speech act type is discovered by conducting four formulas, which are preparatory condition, propositional content, sincerity condition, and essential condition. These formulas determine the validity of the utterances. Thus, people reading the news can refer that the utterances are not hoaxes.   Keywords: Expressive Speech Act, Felicity Condition, Covid-19, Public Figures

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing translation techniques used by the translator in translating the booklet "West Java Calendar of Event 2020" from Indonesian into English. This booklet is published by the Department of Tourism and Culture, West Java. Specifically, this research highlights the translation of culturally bound terms in the booklet. The researchers are interested in analyzing this topic because cultural-bound terms are considered challenging to translate; the translators must understand the cultural background of the languages they are translating. Moreover, it is not likely that translators can find one-to-one correspondence for each cultural term in the text. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method since the data are in the form of text and the researchers also play a role as the key instrument in collecting the data, in this case through document examination. In this research, total sampling technique is applied since the researchers take all of the culturally bound terms in the booklet. The research begins with collecting the cultural terms from the booklet, classifying them into cultural terms categories based on Newmark’s theory of cultural category, and determining the translation techniques based on Molina and Albir’s theory. The result shows that the translator mainly employs borrowing, amplification, description, and established equivalent techniques. There is a tendency that the translator prefers those techniques because it is hard for the translator to find one-to-one correspondence of the terms in the target language. Hopefully, this research will be beneficial for translators in deciding the proper translation techniques in translating cultural terms.
