Abstract

The research aims to identify the students’ translation quality in translating Banyumas tourism texts. Moreover, this research tries to find out the effect of design thinking approach in translation class. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. In other words, this research describes the effect of design thinking approach to the students’ translation by dividing students of English Diploma Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman enrolling on Translation Indonesian-English class into two classes. Class A uses design thinking approach in translating the texts, while class B does not. The students focus on translating Banyumas tourism texts. After the students translate the texts, the researchers and raters do a focus group discussion to check and rate their translation quality in terms of accuracy. The result shows that the translation quality of class A is better than that of class B. It can be seen from the accuracy point of class A which is 2.95 meanwhile, class B has 2.90 for its accuracy. This proves that design thinking approach is suitable to teach translation.

Abstract

Students with hearing and speech impairment at the Special School for the Hearing and Speech Impairment (SLB B) Yakut Purwokerto do not have high level of interest in learning. Moreover, the use of manual learning media which are based on books and blackboards also causes a lack of students’ understanding. This research aims to develop an alternative learning media which are based on educational games to learn English for students with hearing and speech impairment at SLB-B Yakut Purwokerto with the name "Matching" (Match a Thing). The research method in developing this game was the Multimedia Development Life Cycle which consisted of six stages, namely Concept, Design, Assets / Materials Collecting, Manufacturing (assembly), Testing, and Release (distribution). This educational game was built using the Construct 2 game engine and could be accessed using a web browser. The result of this research is an English-learning-educational game that has several menus, including Main Menu, Help, Play, Library, and Evaluation/Quiz. Based on a blackbox testing, valid results were obtained for all given test scenarios, therefore this game is in accordance with the application developer’s expectations. In addition, based on the User Acceptance Testing (UAT), the average perception result was 89% with an indicator of the "Very Good" category which indicates that this application is feasible to use in the English learning process.

Abstract

This paper points on the use of design thinking in fundamental translation class. Design thinking is an approach to produce the best solution of a problem. This approach includes five steps, namely empathize, define (the problem), ideate, prototype, and test. The researchers focus on the translation’s acceptability of idioms since this topic is usually problematic to students. Therefore, a case study was conducted in this research. The participants of this research were 20 students of fundamental translation class in English Literature Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The students translated some idioms using design thinking and their translations were randomly selected. Observation was conducted to examine the students’ behaviours in translating idioms. After that, the researchers rated their translations’ acceptability. The results indicate that design thinking’s application in translating idioms produce acceptable translations. Furthermore, this study can be beneficial for translators and translation teachers to gain acceptability in translation.

Abstract

Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) B (“B” untuk Kategori Tuna Rungu dan Wicara) Yakut Purwokerto adalah sebuah sekolah untuk siswa tuna rungu wicara yang terletak di daerah Kranji, Banyumas, Jawa Tengah. Berdasarkan observasi dan wawancara yang telah dilakukan kepada pihak sekolah, terdapat permasalahan utama di SLB B Yakut Purwokerto, yaitu di bidang pendidikan dan pembelajaran yang menjadi sebuah kesulitan bagi guru-guru di SLB tersebut dikarenakan pembelajaran digunakan untuk anak tuna rungu wicara, tetapi media pembelajaran yang tersedia hanya buku maupun modul standar yang menyulitkan dalam pembelajaran. Solusi yang dapat diberikan kepada SLB B Yakut Purwokerto sekaligus tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah membangun dan memberikan media pembelajaran alternatif berupa game edukasi interaktif yang dapat digunakan oleh siswa tuna rungu wicara di SLB tersebut. Metode yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini secara umum terbagi menjadi beberapa tahapan, yaitu : focus discussion group dengan pihak sekolah, pembuatan game edukasi, pelatihan game edukasi kepada guru, implementasi game edukasi kepada siswa tuna rungu wicara, serta monitoring dan evaluasi keberlanjutan. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah game yang dapat digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar siswa SLB B Yakut Purwokerto sebagai media alternatif dalam belajar. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi menggunakan kuesioner, didapatkan nilai akhir 86,25% dengan indicator kategori “Sangat Baik”, yang menunjukkan bahwa game edukasi ini dapat digunakan untuk proses belajar mengajar di SLB B Yakut Purwokerto.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the type of speech act found in bilingual fables and its translation accuracy. The theory of Searle (1969) on the classification of speech act and the instrument of translation accuracy from Nababan et. al. (2012) are used in the study. It is a descriptive qualitative research with embedded-case study. Several fables books from several different publishers are taken as the data source. The result shows that there are seven pairs of speech act found in both SL and TL utterances, namely directive – directive, representative – representative, expressive - expressive, commissive – commissive, directive - representative, expressive – representative, and expressive directive. The first four pairs are in the same type of speech act whereas the last three pairs have different types of speech acts between SL and TL utterances. Those pairs with the same type of speech act are mostly translated accurately while those pairs with different type of speech act are translated less accurately and inaccurately.

Abstract

Abstract.  This research aims to identify the expressive speech act and its felicity condition uttered by high-profile figures. It specifically attempts to recognize the types of expressive speech act, the intended meaning of those expressive speech act types, and their felicity conditions. The qualitative method was applied to accomplish those study objectives. The data were high-profile figures’ utterances collected from covid-19 related news on an online news site (https://www.merdeka.com/).  This research focuses on the expressive speech acts since they are also known as evaluative speech acts. Moreover, analyzing expressive speech acts uttered by public figures in covid-19 related news may give insight on how the Indonesia’s government manage covid-19 cases. The results confirm that the utterances taken from that site fulfilled some types of expressive speech act, namely praising, thanking, deploring, lamenting, congratulating, and flattering. The intended meaning of those types of expressive speech act are determined by interpreting the speakers’ intention based on the context. Furthermore, the felicity condition of each expressive speech act type is discovered by conducting four formulas, which are preparatory condition, propositional content, sincerity condition, and essential condition. These formulas determine the validity of the utterances. Thus, people reading the news can refer that the utterances are not hoaxes.   Keywords: Expressive Speech Act, Felicity Condition, Covid-19, Public Figures

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the types of verbal humour, the subtitling strategies, and its acceptability in Modern Family Season 6. The research is conducted by using the theory of verbal humour translation by Raphaelson-West (1989), theory of subtitling strategies by Gottlieb (1992) and the theory of translation acceptability proposed by Nababan (2012). This research uses descriptive qualitative method. In the process, this research utilizes a questionnaire with inputs from raters as a consideration in analysing the translation. The data are utterances containing verbal humour from Modern Family Season 6. The result shows the most frequent type is universal humour (45), followed by linguistic humour (19), and cultural humour (13). Furthermore, 8 out of 10 subtitling strategies are applied by the subtiler. The most dominant strategy is the paraphrase strategy (28), followed by transfer (15), expansion (11), condensation (10), deletion (6), imitation (4), transcription (2), and decimation (1). The acceptability level of the subtitle is acceptable in 69 data and less acceptable in 8 data. The object of the research proposes to serve humour in a usual relatable family interaction that is universal. However, the source language is English which has different grammatical, vocabulary, and syntactic rules than Indonesian. Thus, paraphrase strategy is the most frequently used to transfer the message naturally and appropriately to the target language rules without losing the humour. Hence, the subtitle of verbal humour in Modern Family Season 6 is natural and relevant to the Indonesian rules that conveys the meaning and preserve the humour aspects.

Abstract

The research aimed to discover the types of speech acts that existed and elaborated them according to the national and international context. The G20 group consisted of 19 countries and Spain as a permanent guest with the largest economies in the world plus one intergovernmental and supranational organization, namely, the European Union. The research categorized the president’s utterances into five types of speech acts: representatives, expressives, declarations, directives, and commissives. Among the 49 utterances, representatives were the most prevalent, indicating the president’s intent to present factual statements in front of global leaders. The research highlighted the strategic use of plural subjects in directives to involve both the speaker and the audience in the commitment. Expressives were employed to convey gratitude and welcome world leaders, showcasing the president’s politeness and respect. Commissives reflected the president’s commitment to global issues such as peace, food sustainability, and economic recovery. The researchers collected the data through several steps. The first was transcribing the speech; afterward, the researchers picked and classified those utterances based on Searle’s classification of speech acts. The findings underscore the importance of context in understanding the meaning and intention behind political speeches at international forums like the G20 Summit.

Abstract

Background: Berdasarkan observasi dan wawancara yang telah dilakukan kepada pihak sekolah, Sebagian besar lulusan dari SMP N 2 Kalimanah ingin melanjutkan sekolah di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) di wilayah Purbalingga yang memiliki berbagai jurusan sehingga membuat para siswa kesulitan dalam menentukan jurusan sesuai dengan pola minat siswa masing-masing. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk menerapkan sebuah aplikasi yang dapat memberikan rekomendasi penentuan jurusan SMK yang sesuai dengan pola minat masing-masing siswa SMP secara otomatis untuk membantu para siswa dalam menentukan jurusan di SMK. Metode: Metode yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini secara umum terbagi menjadi beberapa tahapan, yaitu : implementasi pengembangan aplikasi, pelatihan kepada guru sekolah, serta simulasi pelaksanaan tes kepada siswa. Hasil: Keberhasilan yang diterapkan  aplikasi rekomendasi jurusan SMK yang sesuai dengan pola minat masing-masing siswa, yang diterapkan di SMP N 2 Kalimanah. Kesimpulan: Dengan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat tentang penerapan aplikasi rekomendasi jurusan SMK sesuai pola minat siswa di SMP N 2 Kalimanah ini dapat memberikan manfaat bagi siswa di SMP N 2 Kalimanah dimana siswa dapat dengan mudah menentukan jurusan SMK yang dipilih sesuai pola minat mereka.

Abstract

The article discusses translation techniques applied in the translation of culture-specific concepts in the description text  of Museum Wayang dan Artefak Purbalingga. Culture-specific concept is one of the common types of non-equivalence at word level resulted from the absence of cultural concepts in the target language. To cope with this problem, a translator is provided with translation techniques proposed by many translation scholars. This research applied the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir. Based on the analysis, the most frequently-used technique is borrowing technique. The technique is relatively common to apply in translating culturally-bound terms that do not have one-to-one correspondence. The most common non-equivalence problem at word level to find is problem of culture-specific concepts. It is because the text describes the puppets displayed there, and to be more specific, puppets are parts of Indonesian culture, a precious cultural heritage.  Therefore, many culturally-bound words or terms are kept original.
