Abstract

Inclusive education for Deaf students in Indonesia continues to face pedagogical challenges, particularly in English language instruction due to the limited availability of accessible and appropriate learning materials. Deaf learners often experience difficulties in vocabulary acquisition and comprehension when instruction relies heavily on text-based approaches. This study aims to conduct a needs analysis to inform the development of culturally inclusive and bilingual English learning materials for Deaf students. Using a qualitative research design, structured interviews were conducted with two English teachers and eight Deaf students at SLBB YPAC Palembang. The data were analyzed using Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA) frameworks. The findings reveal that Deaf students require strong visual support and the integration of Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) to facilitate vocabulary learning and comprehension. Participants also emphasized the importance of incorporating local cultural elements from Palembang, such as traditional food, arts, and dance, to enhance engagement and strengthen cultural identity. Pop-up books emerged as effective multimodal learning media due to their visual, tactile, and interactive features that align with Deaf students’ learning preferences. In conclusion, this study highlights the urgent need for bilingual, multimodal, and culturally responsive English learning materials. The findings provide practical implications for the development of inclusive instructional resources that can reduce learning barriers and promote equitable English language education for Deaf learners.

Abstract

This study investigates best practices in teaching English at elementary schools as implemented by alumni of the PPG Prajabatan Program from Sriwijaya University who currently teach in Palembang. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured written interviews with three PPG Prajabatan 2022 alumni who have one to three years of teaching experience at the elementary level. The study focused on identifying concrete teaching practices that support student engagement and language development in early EFL classrooms. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s procedures, including familiarization with the data, initial coding, theme development, and interpretation. The findings revealed three major best practices: differentiated instruction tailored to students’ readiness and learning styles, communicative and game-based learning to promote active language use, and flexible integration of multiple teaching approaches adjusted to classroom needs and lesson objectives. Rather than applying a single method, participants combined various strategies to create meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how professionally trained teachers translate pedagogical knowledge into classroom practice. Practically, the study offers insights for teacher education programs, particularly PPG Prajabatan, to strengthen reflective practice, instructional flexibility, and creativity in preparing future English teachers for elementary school contexts.

Abstract

Descriptive-text instruction in junior high schools often relies on generic materials that lack cultural relevance and digital interactivity. This study addresses that gap by developing local-wisdom-based teaching materials for descriptive-text learning, delivered through the FlipHTML5 digital platform. The research aims to produce materials that are valid, practical, and effective in supporting English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. Using a Research and Development (RD) approach with the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation), the study first conducted a needs analysis with 220 students to identify instructional challenges. Product trials were then carried out with 30 students, involving one-to-one testing, small-group trials (10 students), and field trials (20 students). Instruments included expert validation rubrics (content, language, media), practicality questionnaires (teachers and students), and pre-/post-tests of descriptive-text writing. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the N-gain formula to measure learning improvement. Results indicate that the developed materials achieved a very valid category with an average expert score of 94.96%, were rated practical by teachers and students (80%), and demonstrated high effectiveness with an N-gain score of 0.79, reflecting significant improvement in students’ writing skills. This research contributes to the field by providing culturally responsive EFL materials enriched with local wisdom and supported by empirical evidence of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. It also highlights the potential of digital flipbooks as innovative instructional media for junior high school contexts.

Abstract

Strong literacy skills have a significant impact on the mastery of other areas, including numeracy. Although numeracy itself does not directly contribute to the core definition of multimodal literacy, numerical concepts can be taught using a multimodal approach through the use of visual, audio, and kinesthetic modes. Thus, multimodal literacy not only supports the development of language competencies, but can also enrich cross-disciplinary learning strategies. For multimodal learning to be implemented optimally, teachers need to master TPACK, which enables them to design meaningful learning experiences by effectively utilizing technology. This community service activity aims at providing solutions to these problems through training and mentoring for teachers as SD Negeri 149 Palembang in designing and implementing TPACK-based multimodal literacy, the basic principles of TPACK, and practical applications in developing lesson plans that integrate technology and multimodality. This activity was conducted from October 2025 to November 2025, at SD Negeri 149 Palembang, attended by 23 teachers. The implementation methods included four stages, namely identification of teachers’ needs and potential through observations and interviews; presentation on the theory and practice of multimodal literacy and TPACK; workshop on designing TPACK-based and multimodal learning; and the implementation and evaluation of classroom activities. Supported by simple technology applications, such as Canva and other interactive applications, the activity resulted on the knowledge about how to meaningfully integrate technology with pedagogical approaches and content to create rich and engaging learning experiences for students. The use of Topworksheets was one alternative to choose.
