Abstract

Abstract

Immunization is crucial for protecting individuals from vaccine-preventable diseases, but pain during and after vaccination can lead to fear and anxiety in children, causing them to refuse subsequent vaccinations. This study aimed to address the lack of knowledge among parents regarding non-pharmacological pain management techniques, specifically healing touch (HT), through a community empowerment partnership (PKM) program. The PKM was conducted as a socialization event for posyandu cadres at the Waihoka Community Health Center on October 30, 2024. Participants completed a pre-test questionnaire, attended a presentation on HT for post-immunization pain management, engaged in a question-and-answer session, and completed a post-test questionnaire. The results showed that before the socialization, most cadres had poor knowledge of non-pharmacological therapies and HT. However, after the event, their knowledge significantly improved, with the majority demonstrating very good understanding. The study concludes that the socialization effectively enhanced the posyandu cadres' knowledge of HT as a non-pharmacological therapy for post-immunization pain management. The authors recommend that the Ambon City Health Office, through the Community Health Center, conduct similar socialization events for parents through posyandu cadres to promote the use of HT in reducing post-immunization pain and anxiety in children.

Abstract

Low back pain is a global health problem that affects quality of life and work productivity. The causes vary, from injuries to degenerative diseases. One alternative approach to relieve LBP is clove leaves and nutmeg. Clove leaves contain eugenol, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle relaxant properties, while nutmeg contains myristicin and essential oils that effectively relieve pain. The combination of the two, which can be used in the form of massage oil or herbal ointment, has the potential to provide a synergistic effect in reducing pain and inflammation. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of clove leaf and nutmeg essential oils in reducing LBP pain in Ambon City. The research method used was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design involving 50 respondents who experienced LBP and were divided into two groups. Data were collected using a numeric pain assessment scale and analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test. The results showed that 64% of respondents in the clove leaf oil group and 76% in the nutmeg seed oil group experienced moderate pain before the intervention. After the intervention, a significant decrease in pain was found, where the clove leaf group showed an average decrease in pain from 2.36 to 0.24 (p = 0.000), while the nutmeg group from 2.24 to 1.48 (p = 0.001). This study indicates that clove leaf essential oil is more effective in relieving LBP pain than nutmeg seed oil. These findings provide recommendations for using local natural resources as an alternative non-pharmacological therapy in managing LBP.

Abstract

Background: Hospitalization can trigger significant anxiety in preschool children due to their cognitive and emotional limitations in understanding medical procedures. Storytelling therapy is a potential non-pharmacological approach to alleviating anxiety, especially in regions such as Maluku, which have limited resources and a unique cultural context. Method: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 38 children aged 3–5 years hospitalized at Sumber Hidup Hospital in Ambon were selected through total sampling. The intervention, which involved storytelling therapy, was conducted over five consecutive days within two weeks, with each session lasting approximately 30 minutes, resulting in a total intervention duration of around 2.5 hours per child. The instrument used was the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS) preschool version. Data analysis was performed using a paired t-test. Results: The average anxiety score decreased from 3.08 to 2.37 (∆ = 0.71), with statistical test results showing a p-value of 0.001 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.525–0.896, indicating a statistically significant decrease. Most children moved from the moderate/severe anxiety category to the mild category after the intervention. Conclusion: Storytelling therapy was proven effective in reducing anxiety in preschool children during hospitalization and is worthy of integration into pediatric nursing practice in island regions such as Maluku. However, the limitation of the design without a control group should be noted in interpreting the results. These findings have practical implications that culturally-based narrative interventions can serve as a simple, cost-effective, and contextually appropriate strategy in pediatric nursing care. Abstract

The increasing prevalence of social media use among adolescents has raised concerns regarding its potential impact on mental health. This study investigated the relationship between social media addiction and adolescent mental health in Ambon, Indonesia. A quantitative cross-sectional research design was utilized, involving 336 adolescents aged 13-18 who actively used social media. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics, social media usage patterns, and mental health status using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis using odds ratios (ORs), and multivariate analysis via multiple logistic regression were conducted. Results indicated that 64.88% of respondents had poor mental health scores. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between age, study frequency, duration of social media use, and social media usage scores with mental health conditions (p<0.05). Multiple logistic regression identified that adolescents aged 18-20 years, those who studied infrequently, used social media for over three hours daily, and had high social media usage scores were at greater risk of poor mental health. These findings underscore the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to design effective interventions and policies that foster responsible social media use and promote adolescent mental well-being in the digital era.

Abstract

ntroduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with an increasing global prevalence that demands effective intervention strategies. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-researched approach for treating various co-occurring disorders in children with ASD. However, despite the growing volume of research, there remains a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis that maps global trends, thematic focus, and collaboration patterns in CBT-related ASD studies, highlighting a critical gap that this study seeks to address. Methods: This study used a bibliometric approach to analyze global research trends in CBT for treating children with ASD. It analyzed 148 articles published between 2007 and 2025. Data were collected from the Scopus database and analyzed using VOSviewer, Harzing's Publish or Perish, and Microsoft Excel. This bibliometric analysis provides a novel perspective by quantitatively mapping the evolution of research, identifying underexplored themes, and revealing disparities in scientific contributions between developed and developing countries, an area that has received limited attention in existing CBT-ASD literature. Results: The results showed a significant upward trend in publications on CBT for ASD since 2007, peaking by 2025. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia dominated the geographical distribution of research, whereas developing countries had limited contributions. Collaboration patterns revealed strong connections between developed countries, with the United States as the main center. This study focused on the effectiveness of CBT in managing anxiety disorders, improving social skills, and addressing comorbidities, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and sleep problems. However, there are research gaps in the application of CBT for severe ASD and in the involvement of developing countries. Conclusion: This study offers a novel bibliometric insight into the evolution and focus of CBT research in ASD, highlighting underexplored areas for future inquiry. Its implications can be extended to health practitioners, policymakers, educators, and researchers. Future research should explore the adaptation of CBT to various cultural contexts and ASD severity, utilizing technological advancements and multidisciplinary collaboration to provide more inclusive and accessible interventions for children with ASD worldwide.

Abstract

Background: In 21st-century education, developing therapeutic communication skills is a vital goal, especially in nursing education, where effective communication greatly impacts patient outcomes and professional competence. In Indonesia, concern has grown about the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice in therapeutic communication, which often leads to less effective interactions between nurses, patients, and families. Aims: This highlights the urgent need for research-driven improvements in nursing curricula and teaching methods. Methods: This study conducted a qualitative content analysis of peer-reviewed articles published in Indonesian nursing education journals from 2006 to 2021. The selection process involved identifying and reviewing articles that specifically addressed the development, application, or assessment of therapeutic communication skills in nursing education and practice. Data were analysed through a thematic categorisation approach, focusing on publication trends, research designs, target groups, instruments, and data analysis techniques. Results: The analysis showed that the number of publications focusing on therapeutic communication skills has stayed relatively high in recent years. Quantitative research methods were most common, with descriptive correlational and survey studies leading. Patients were the main research subjects, and among various topics, family-related communication received the most attention. Questionnaires were the most frequently used data collection tools, and correlation tests were the most common data analysis methods. Conclusion: This study suggests that future research should diversify methodologies, including more qualitative approaches (such as ethnographic studies and in-depth interviews) and action research designs, to better capture the real-life dynamics of therapeutic communication. Researchers are also encouraged to provide more detailed information on the validity and reliability of data collection tools and to choose analysis methods that align closely with their research questions and study designs. Improving research on therapeutic communication skills is crucial for advancing nursing education and enhancing the quality of nurse–patient interactions within Indonesia’s healthcare system.
