Abstract

High-protein food has a significant impact on reducing hunger conditions and increasing satiety. Not many studies have investigated the impact of differences in a high protein diet on satiety based on sex and nutritional status. The aim of the study is to determine the effects of a high protein diet (animal and plant-based) on satiety based on sex and nutritional status. The experimental research was conducted by pre-post group design. The subjects of this research were 23 adults aged 20-23 years who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria living in Yogyakarta. Satiety profiles (hunger, fullness, desire to eat, and PFC) were measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaire. The categorization of nutritional status is based on BMI. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-test and paired t-test. Based on sex, there was a difference in the fullness component between males and females after consuming animal protein meals (p= 0,001) and plant-based protein meals (p< 0,01). Whereas based on nutritional status, there was no difference in all satiety profiles. In conclusion, men have different satiety from women after consuming a high protein diet.

Abstract

Obesity incidence in children, especially primary school children, is increasing. This obesity can be caused by environmental factors: availability of food at home and the home environment or home environment such as the physical environment, exposure to screen time, mother knowledge, and maternal behaviour in providing feeding practices. This study aims to determine the difference between food availability and home environment for obese and non-obese children. The design of this research was case-control conducted with the subject of elementary school-age children in Yogyakarta city. The research was conducted in March-November 2017. Samples were chosen by the multistage sampling method. Subjects were grouped into children with obese nutritional status as a case (n=71) and children with normal nutritional status as control (n=71) based on the BFA index. The data were collected by anthropometric measurements, interviewing, and filling out Home Environment Survey questionnaires on children and their parents. Data analysis using Mann Whitney statistical test, Spearman test, McNemar test, and logistic regression. Food availability showed significant mean differences in case and control groups (p <0,05). Other environmental factors showed no significant differences, but in the case group, the mother's feeding scores were less healthy than the control group; the average duration of case group screen time was higher than 20 minutes than the control group; higher physical environmental support scores control group than case groups. In conclusion, food availability had significant mean differences in both groups.

Abstract

An adolescent female athlete has a high risk of suffering iron deficiency. Low-quality diets reflect a lack of variety, adequacy, balance, and moderation, but these have not been associated with iron deficiency. This study aimed to analyze the relationship of diet quality with iron deficiency. Methods, the research was conducted at the Student Center for Education and Sports Training Central Java, the Salatiga athletic club, the Semarang State University athletic, and the swimming club. The subjects were 82 female athletes aged 13-21 years who were selected by purposive sampling. The variables of this study were diet quality and iron deficiency. The diet quality measured by assessing food consumption used the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire and then the diet quality score calculated by Diet Quality Index-International. Iron deficiency measured based on serum ferritin level. The bivariate was analyzed by the Rank Spearman test. Results, as many as 17,1% of subjects suffering iron deficiency and 95,1% of subjects had low diet quality. Diet quality and its component; Variety, adequacy, moderation, and overall balance were associated with serum ferritin (p<0,05). Energy, protein, iron, fiber adequacy also related to serum ferritin, but vitamin C adequacy was not related to this. In conclusion, low-quality diets are associated with iron deficiency in female athletes.

Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of adolescents obesity in the last decade have an impact on the increased prevalence of adolescents metabolic syndrome (MetS). Diet quality is one of the determining factors in the incidence of adolescents obesity, so it can also be a factor for MetS.Objective: To analyze the relationship between diet quality and MetS risk factors in obese adolescents.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the 57 obese students in 7th and 8th grades of Nasima and Kesatrian Junior High School in Semarang. Blood pressure (BP) and waist circumference (WC) measurements, as well as blood samples for measurement of fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), were conducted to determine the number of risk factors experienced by the subject. Diet quality was measured through assessment of food consumption using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Pearson and Spearman's test was used to determine the correlation between diet quality and MetS risk factors. Results: The majority of obese adolescents (96.5%) had a low-quality of diet. There were 31.6% subjects experienced pre-metabolic syndrome and 68.4% had MetS, with the prevalence of MetS, was higher in male subjects. The diet quality, variety, adequacy scores and fiber intake of the pre-metabolic syndrome group were higher than MetS group. Variety and adequacy scores had significant negative correlation with TG (r = -0.374, p=0.004; r = -0.357, p=0.006, respectively). There was no significant relationship between diet quality score and the number of MetS risk factors (p=0.538), although they had a negative correlation (r = -0.083).Conclusion: Prevalence of pre-metabolic syndrome and MetS was 31.6% and 68.4%. Though there was no significant relationship, diet quality had a negative correlation with the number of MetS risk factors. Variety and adequacy scores had a significant relationship with triglyceride levels.

Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is a disease of the musculoskeletal system which are common in women. Menopausal status which affects the production of oestrogen and obesity status that describes mass and distribution of body fat have the potential to affect bone density, which in turn may have an impact on the incidence of osteoporosis. Objective: To analyze the menopausal and obesity status as risk factors for osteoporosis in women aged 40-80 years.Method: Cross-sectional study was conducted on 224 women aged 40-80 years in Ngemplak Simongan, Semarang. Status of obesity was determined by percent of body fat, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio (WHR). Menopausal status was determined based on the occurrence of menstruation in the past one year, and the age was calculated from the difference between date of birth and date of measurement. Bone density was assessed frombone mineral density measurement. Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to determine the relationship and the most influential factors. The risk was expressed in ratio prevalence (RP).Results: The prevalence of low bone density and obesity in each age range, were 43.8% and 57.9% for ages 40-50 years, 67.7% and 58.6% for ages 51-60 years, 84.9% and 49.1% for ages 61-70 year, 86.7% and 66.7% for ages 71-80 years. There were significant relationships between age, menopausal status, BMI, WHR and bone density (p=0.000, p=0.032, p=0.043, p=0.017, respectively). Osteoporosis (13.3%) and osteopenia (58.7%) were most widely experienced by subjects with high WHR and menopause. Percentage of osteopenia in high WHR and non-menopause subjects (60%) was higher than normal WHR and menopause subjects (52.9%). Age 61-80 years, high WHR, and non-obese BMI were the most influenced risk factorsfor the incidence of low bone density (p=0.001, p=0.038, p=0.043). Ratio prevalence of elderly, high WHR and non-obese BMI were 1.448, 1.326, 1.208.Conclusion: High WHR explains the role of android obesity and visceral fat as risk factors for low bone density. Premenopausal women will be more at risk of having low bone density if they have high WHR.

Abstract

Body type (somatotype) with metabolic syndrome among non-obese woman aged 25-40 years oldBackground: The prevalence of central obesity was found high in women, not only in obese individuals but also occur in non-obese individuals or metabolically obese normal weight (MONW). Endomorph marked by higher fat mass, which will lead to metabolic disorders. Objective: This study aimed to describe the correlation of somatotype with metabolic syndrome in a non-obese woman.Methods: Cross-sectional observational study, subjects were selected using purposive sampling involving 46 women 25-40 years old with BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 in several offices in the City of Semarang, consist of Balai Besar Teknologi Pencegahan dan Pencemaran Industri, Dinas Pekerjaan Umum, and Dinas Perindustrian dan Perdagangan Central Java. Somatotype data is measured in three components, namely endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. The resulting value of each component is calculated using the Heath-Carter formula. Triglycerides, HDL, and fasting blood glucose measured by enzymatic colorimetric methods. Blood pressure measured by aneroid sphygmomanometer. Syndrome metabolic was defined as metabolic syndrome risk score (cMetS). Data were analyzed by Rank Spearman and Pearson. Results: The subject's body type is endomorph as much as 91.3% and ectomorph-endomorph (8.7%). Central obesity (50%), low HDL levels (28%), hypertriglyceridemia (2%), normal GDP levels (100%), hypertension (15%), metabolic syndrome (13%), and metabolic pre-syndromes (47, 8%) found in the subject of this study. There were correlation between endomorph (p=0.005; r=0.4) and ectomorph (p=0.000; r=-0.53) with waist circumference. There was a significant correlation between endomorph with metabolic syndrome risk score (p=0.05; r=0.129).Conclusions: Endomorph was associated with a metabolic syndrome risk score. Higher endomorph tends to have higher metabolic syndrome risk scores.
