Abstract

Land use in Bogor Regency has diverse vegetation and different soil characteristics. Soil characteristics have an influence on land management. Improper land management has led to a decrease in microbial populations, biodiversity and a decline in soil quality and fertility. Soil fertility is produced by the interaction of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. This study aims to determine the correlation of soil biological and chemical properties in several different types of land use in Bogor Regency. Soil sampling was carried out using the purposive random sampling method with five replicates. Soil samples were taken at a depth of 0-20 cm by ±1 kg. The research site includes eight land uses namely bamboo gardens, sengon gardens, lamtorogung gardens, and dragon fruit orchards. The results of the analysis showed that the dragon fruit field had an acid pH with very high organic C and total N levels with the highest fungal population of 2.27 x 105 CFU g-1. Meanwhile, bamboo fields with an acid pH also have a medium organic C content and low total N with the lowest total fungi population of 0.37 x 105 CFU g-1. Azotobacter populations and respiration values had the highest correlation with the total P content of the soil. The correlation value of the total population of fungi was the highest, with a total N levels of 0.427.

Abstract

Prominent problems in suboptimal land are often only related to the chemical and physical properties of the soil such as low soil pH, available nutrients and the ability of the soil to supply available water. Assessment of soil biological characteristics is needed to look at soil problems on dry land more comprehensively. The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary study of the variability of soil biological characteristics in suboptimal dry land. This study was carried out with a field survey accompanied by soil sampling using a composite method in 24 land locations which are the centers of development of the Department of Agriculture commodity development in five districts in Central Java Province that were randomly selected. In addition to soil organic matter, soil biological characteristic studied was the total number of soil microorganisms. The results of the study on both potato and sweet potato commodity lands showed there were intervals of the number of soil microorganisms, namely 1.83 x 105 - 1.63 x 106 CFU g-1 of soil and 3.90 x 105 - 1.10 x 106 CFU g-1 of soil. While the interval of soil respiration value is 4.80 - 10.97 mg C-CO2 kg-1 of soil day-1 for potato commodity land and 5.31 - 10.80 mg C-CO2 kg-1 of soil day-1 for sweet potato land. There was no strong correlation between the number of soil microorganisms and soil respiration, which was indicated by a correlation value of 0.29. The biological characteristics of the soil varied greatly, and they did not affect the type of commodity or location.

Abstract

Various efforts have been carried out by the Indonesian Government to increase rice production, especially the construction of new paddy fields and paddy intensification through increasing intensity or planting frequency in a year. Overcoming the problems of chemical and physical soil properties that have caused low soil productivity is an effort that can be made to increase rice production. This study was aimed to assess the quality of soil physical and chemical properties of the paddy fields in order to find out the cause of the low productivity of paddy soils. The study was conducted in 24 locations in Banten and West Java Provinces. In general, based on their soil quality indexes, the study found that the soil physical quality of paddy soil is good and better than soil chemical quality. There was no significantly different between soil physical quality of paddy soil in Banten and West Java Provinces. However, the soil chemical quality of paddy soils in West Java Province is significantly better than in Banten Province. There were no limiting factors for soil physical properties, while in some locations, some limiting factors of soil chemicals properties were found. Dominant limiting factors for plant growth were the low available P, organic matter and total organic N contents, low pH, and low exchangeable K, and high level of Fe.

Abstract

The demand for sweet corn increases over time. To increase sweet corn production, many farmers often use inorganic fertilizers excessively. Excessive use of inorganic fertilizers can have a negative impact on soils. One of the efforts that can be made to increase sweet corn production is the provision of biofertilizers, such as mycorrhizae. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor was the application of fertilizer with 7 levels of treatment, namely Control; NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer; NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer + 2.5 g mycorrhizal granules; NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer + 5 g mycorrhizal granules; NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer + 2.5 g mycorrhizal powder; NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer + 5 g mycorrhizal powder; and NPK fertilizer + organic fertilizer + mycorrhizal powder (coating). The second factor was two different soils used as growing media, namely Regosol and Latosol from Dramaga. This study was carried out in five replications. The parameters observed were plant height, stem diameter, plant biomass, root colonization, soil available P, and total P in plants. The results showed that the application of mycorrhizal powder with coating techniques increased the growth of maize plants, the level of root colonization, the availability of soil phosphorus nutrients, and plant phosphorus uptake by the plants.

Abstract

Organic matter that is usually quite widely available around farmers' land can be one of the solutions in overcoming the problem of soil acidification and nutrient deficiencies in tropical highly weathered soils. However, one of the main problems in utilizing such organic matter on acidic soils is the diversity of its chemical composition, which affects the decomposition of the organic matter. In this study, a mixture of soil with five types of organic matter was incubated, namely cow manure, chicken manure, rice straw, legume plant residue, and their combination, with doses equivalent to 0, 7.5 and 15 tons/ha. Mixtures of soil with organic matter were incubated for 120 days under conditions of field capacity moisture. The aim was to evaluate the amelioration effect of the organic matter on soil acidification (exchangeable-Al and soil pH), available P, and phosphatase activity. The application of organic matter type and dose has a marked effect on decreasing the content of exchangeable Al and increasing soil pH, P-available, and phosphatase activity. Chicken manure application showed the best effect in lowering soil exchangeable-Al and increasing pH, available-P, and phosphatase activity. Keywords: amelioration, manure, phosphatase
