Abstract

Abstract. Sasongko PE, Mindari W, Romadhon MR, Hidayaturrachman H. 2026. Soil fertility dynamics under varying land use systems in Jatiarjo Village, Prigen Sub-district, Pasuruan, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 10 (2): g100201. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100201. Variations in land use, geographical conditions, and land management practices highly influence soil fertility. This study evaluated the soil fertility status of three dominant land-use systems-mixed garden, shrubland, and moorland in Jatiarjo Village, Prigen Sub-district, Pasuruan District, East Java, Indonesia. Three land use units, including mixed garden, shrubland, and moorland, were assessed using the Soil Fertility Index (SFI). Soil sampling was a random sampling method at a 0-20 cm depth, with 7 points in each land unit. Soil samples were analyzed for soil. Chemical characteristics included pH, organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), Base Saturation (BS), Aluminum Saturation (AS), and soil texture. Minimum Soil Fertility Indicators (MSFI) were identified using Pearson correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and the Soil Fertility Index (SFI) was calculated accordingly. Soil pH ranged from 5.15-6.44, organic C from 2.20-11.60%, total N from 0.12-1.06%, available P from 0.60-18.54 ppm, and exchangeable K from 0.09-0.15 μg/100 g. CEC was 24.44-43.97 me/100 g, while BS remained very low (5.31-10.01%). SFI indicated medium fertility across all land uses, averaging 0.62 in mixed gardens, 0.61 in shrublands, and 0.58 in moorlands. Higher SFI in mixed gardens reflected greater organic matter inputs, whereas lower fertility in moorlands was linked to minimal organic inputs and more intensive cultivation. This study highlights the significance of organic matter application and land conservation practices in sustaining and enhancing soil fertility, and also provides a scientific basis for targeted land management to sustain soil productivity in upland agroecosystems.

Abstract

Using manure in the form of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) influences the heavy metal levels absorbed by plants, which can affect both plant quality and human health. This research aims to assess the impact of LOF on soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, lead levels, and the fruit yield of tomatoes. A factorial completely randomized design (CRD) was employed, with the first factor being three types of LOF from chicken, goat, and cow manure and the second factor being three doses of LOF: 5, 10, and 15 mL. The study utilized tomato plants grown in latosol soil. Results indicated that the application of LOF from the three manure types affected soil nitrogen, soil lead, and tomato yield. The addition of LOF also influenced lead content and tomato production. However, the use of chicken manure is not recommended due to high lead accumulation in soil and plants. The optimal LOF dose was found to be 5-10 mL, which maintained lead levels within safe limits. The best tomato fruit yield was achieved with 5 mL of goat manure LOF, resulting in low metal accumulation.

Abstract

Nutrients in sandy soil are limited due to low absorption capacity and are easily leached or evaporated. Biosilica and humic acid extracted from compost and husk ash can improve the soil structure and absorption capacity to optimize the availability and uptake of nutrients. Therefore, this research aims to examine the optimal application dose of biosilica and humic acid to improve the chemical properties of soil with a sandy texture. The experiment was structured based on a completely randomized design (CRD). Factor 1 consisted of biosilica doses of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 tons ha-1, while factor 2 comprised humic acid doses of 0, 20, 40, and 60 kg ha-1. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test, correlation, and determination analysis. The study results indicate that the combination of biosilica and humic acid contributes to the changes in nutrient availability. The impact of the treatment was observed 90 days after application on the parameters of soil pH, organic C, total N, and exchangeable K. The effects of the treatment were also evident in plant nutrient uptake, specifically in total N in the roots and total K in the stems. The optimal combination for improving soil nutrient availability and nutrient uptake in plant tissues was a biosilica dose of 1.0 tons ha-1 (S2) and humic acid at 40 kg ha-1 (H2).

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Soil physical quality is an essential component that determines the soil’s ability to support land productivity. This study aims to assess the Soil Physical Quality Index (SPQI) across various land-use types in Tutur District, Pasuruan Regency. The research was conducted based on surveys, field observations, and laboratory analyses. The assessment employed a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach to determine the weights of soil functions and the most influential physical indicators. Soil sampling points were selected using the purposive sampling method. Indicators of soil physical quality include bulk density, porosity, effective depth, permeability, aggregate stability, soil moisture, and soil texture. The SPQI values obtained ranged from 0.23 to 0.79, categorized from poor to good. Pine forest showed the highest SPQI value (0.734), whereas upland dryland had the lowest value (0.327). The results of this study provide a scientific basis for more effective land management efforts to maintain and improve soil physical quality in Tutur District.

Abstract

Aggregate stability is an important indicator in assessing soil quality and the potential for land damage due to erosion. Land use that is not in accordance with soil capacity and intensive agricultural activities in sloping areas can reduce the stability of aggregates and increase the risk of soil degradation. This study was conducted in Tutur District, Pasuruan Regency, which has a variety of land uses, including dry fields, apple orchards, coffee plantations, mixed plantations, and natural forests, as well as three classes of slope inclination, namely 8–15%, 16–25%, and 26–45%. The objectives of this study were to examine the aggregate stability index values for various land uses and slope inclinations and to analyze the soil factors that influence these values. The purposive random sampling method was used to determine 45 sample points at soil depths of 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm. The samples were analyzed in the laboratory to obtain data on texture, bulk density, permeability, organic matter (organic C), and aggregate stability index. The data were then analyzed using correlation and linear regression tests to determine relationships among soil physical variables. The results showed that the lowest aggregate stability was found in apple orchards with a slope of 16–25%, while the highest value was found in natural forests with a slope of 8–15%. Organic C and soil texture were recorded as having the greatest influence on the variation in aggregate stability values across all land uses. This finding is a strength of the study because it provides a strong scientific basis for practical recommendations, namely the need to increase organic matter and cover vegetation as a conservation strategy to maintain soil aggregate stability.
