Abstract

Medowo Village in Kediri Regency has great potential in the agriculture and livestock sector, but still relies on expensive and hard-to-obtain chemical fertilizers. Additionally, the suboptimal management of livestock waste causes environmental pollution. This service program aims to empower farmers in Medowo Village through training in the production of organic fertilizer using Photosynthetic Bacteria (PsB) and bioslurry. The service methods include socialization, training, and mentoring the "Tani Makmur" farmer group to understand and independently apply the techniques for producing organic fertilizer. This community service activity can reduce farmers' dependence on chemical fertilizers while optimizing the use of livestock waste as an environmentally friendly source of plant nutrients. The evaluation results show an increase in farmers' understanding and skills in producing and applying organic fertilizers. Thus, this program has the potential to support sustainable agriculture in Medowo Village and can serve as a model for the implementation of environmentally friendly farming practices in other regions.

Abstract

Abstract                                                             The quality of groundwater is naturally determined by water-bearing rock characteristics. However, the progression of civilian activities also negatively affects the groundwater quality. Therefore, this study aims to assess groundwater's physical, chemical, and biological characteristics in Indonesia's Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) campus area and evaluate its compliance with drinking water quality standards, particularly the Class A standard. A comparative descriptive strategy was utilized in the study by involving groundwater in the campus area of UM. The focus of the research is water quality in unconfined aquifers. Through purposive sampling, 12 wells were selected to ensure appropriate spatial dispersion. Water samples were collected in sample bottles and tested for physical, biological, and chemical properties. The Perum Jasa Tirta I Malang carried out these water quality tests. Water quality data were analyzed qualitatively, descriptively, and comparatively. This study concludes that (1) the groundwater on the UM campus generally meets the physical criteria for drinking water quality standards; (2) the chemical quality of the groundwater on the UM campus still satisfies the drinking water quality standards; and (3) biologically, the free groundwater on the UM campus fails to meet drinking water quality standards. The novelty of this research is that the biggest threat to the quality of free groundwater in the campus area is bacterial contamination from sanitation activities. Accordingly, it is recommended that groundwater is boiled before being utilized for drinking water purposes to neutralize the E. coli bacteria present in all well water samples. Keywords: Water Quality of Unconfined Aquifer; The Drinking Water; Quality Standard

Abstract

This study explores human-nature relationships through a socio-ecological perspective, focusing on traditional oil mining in Wonocolo, Indonesia, widely known as “Little Texas”. The analysis was conducted through field observations, in-depth interviews with 40 local stakeholders, and laboratory analysis of 40 groundwater samples collected from community dug wells. Results show residents rely on dug wells, piped-water, and artesian springs, with significant seasonal scarcity. Water quality assessment indicates that most physical parameters remain within acceptable limits (pH 6.40–8.00; electrical conductivity 0.43–2.26 mS/cm; temperature 22.00–31.00 °C). However, localized elevations in electrical conductivity at several sampling points suggest potential hydrochemical alterations in the shallow aquifer that may be associated with traditional oil extraction activities, particularly in a karst-dominated landscape. Although direct measurements of TPH and Oil & Grease were not available for a comprehensive ecotoxicological assessment, these findings highlight a critical socio-ecological trade-off in which short-term economic benefits from oil production may increasingly pressure long-term groundwater security. The study concludes that managing these interdependencies requires participatory governance and waste-stream regulation tailored to the karst landscape. Integrated policies are essential to ensure that economic benefits do not undermine the community's fundamental access to clean water, aligning with SDG 6 and SDG 12.

Abstract

EMPOWERING COASTAL COMMUNITIES WITH INTEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT (ICZM) IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONSERVATION-BASED JOLOSUTRO BEACH TOURISM FOR SDGS Blitar Regency has considerable tourism potential, especially related to beach tourism. This is due to the position of Blitar Regency which is adjacent to the ocean in the south, as well as the construction of the Southern Cross Line (JLS). One of the beaches that has considerable potential is Jolosutro Beach. The potential of Jolosutro Beach has not been fully developed due to the absence of a comprehensive and sustainable development plan. This service aims to empower coastal communities through integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) in the context of a conservation-based approach for sustainable tourism development at Jolosutro Beach. The implementation of this service uses a participatory approach. The implementation of the service is carried out in collaboration with coastal communities, who are actively involved in every stage of the process. The process begins with a preliminary stage, where relevant conservation issues are identified and addressed in a way that is conducive to the growth of the tourism sector. The implementation stage will include the transplantation of mangrove seedlings into the Jolosutro Beach environment. The research findings show that the Community Watch Group (Pokmaswas) has the potential to become the main actor of conservation in Jolosutro Beach. This is evidenced by the group's capacity to conserve the beach by promoting sea cypress plants, mangroves, turtle hatching and release, thereby supporting sustainable tourism development. In addition, Pokmaswas already has basic knowledge related to management through Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), so capacity building has the potential to increase community income sustainably.
