Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which is aimed to find out the Vocabulary Level of the third year Natural Science and Social Science Students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. The subjects of this study were the third year Natural Science and Social Science Students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. 244 students taking part in this study were given The New Vocabulary Level Test (NVLT) by Webb et al., (2017). The findings of this study revealed that the student vocabulary level as follows the mean score result, the study shows that the Natural science students have reached the requirement for the 1000 and 2000 vocabulary level of Depdiknas RI (2004). It requires that the categories middle level readers (high school) must acquire 1500-3000 family words. Even though for the 3000 vocabulary level, they have not reached the threshold yet. While for the Social Science students, they reach half of the 1000 vocabulary level. While most of them got scores in 12 or 1200 vocabulary words and 9 or 900 vocabulary in the 2000 and 3000 vocabulary level. Based on this study, the students should be focused to learn high frequency vocabulary. As Webb (2017) stated that the high frequency vocabulary will give a bigger impact for the students. Since the high frequency vocabulary accounts for a large percentage of English, it provides a foundation for further lexical and language development for the students.Key Words: Vocabulary, Vocabulary Level Test, Natural science students and Social Sciencestudents.

Abstract

Absract: This research aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. This research took place in MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, which was collected from February to March 2020. The try out class was VIIITQA2 class (19 students) and the sample was VIIIA3 (32 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pretest and posttest design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data was a reading test in multiple choice forms. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 59.03 and post-test is 62.97. In the other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.907) is higher than t-table (3.365) at the significance level 0.1%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. It is suggested that in understanding recount text is one of alternatives, the teacher needs to focus on the students’ understanding of the sentences on the texts.Key Words: Effect, Reading Comprehension, PQ4R Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out if there is a significant correlation between the interest in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery of the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample of this research consisted of 36 students which was taken by using Cluster Random Sampling Technique. The data were collected through questionnaire in order to measure students’ interest in listening to English songs and AVK test to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. The results showed that the students have high interest in listening to English songs and have average ability in mastering vocabulary through Aural Vocabulary Knowledge (AVK). Further, the significant correlation was discovered between both variables with a moderately positive correlation.Key Words: Interest, Listening, English Songs, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to identify and describe the students’ perception on using Schoology application in learning English during pandemic Covid-19. The population of this research is the second year students of SMP Cendana Pekanbaru. The number of sample is 44 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Data of this research were collected through an online questionnaire using Google form and distributed via WhatsApp Group. The research analyzed by using SPSS Ver.23 and Microsoft Excel then explained descriptively. Based on the results of this research, the students’ perception levels in terms of Students’ Perception on Utilizing Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X1) was in very good category (82.8%), Students’ Perception about Benefits of Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X2) was in good category (76%), Students’ Perception about Challenges on Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X3) was in mediocre category (58.9%), and Students’ Perception of Satisfaction by Using Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X4) was in good category (67%). The results shows the average of all scores in general was in good category (71.18%). It means the students’ positively accepted Schoology as a good application a platform in learning English during pandemic Covid-19. Students’ Perception on Utilizing Schoology in Learning English during Pandemic Covid-19 (X1) has the highest percentage (82.8%) which means that students agree that Schoology is easy to use, Schoology has interesting features that support teaching and learning activities. This study implies that the second year students of SMP Cendana Pekanbaru have a good perception on using Schoology in learning English during pandemic Covid-19.Key Words: Perception, Schoology, Pandemic Covid-19.

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to investigate whether problem-based learning (PBL) method can affect students’ speaking ability. The research was conducted at the first year exact science students of SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru. The number of the students was 324 in 9 classes. Due to the large population, the cluster random sampling was used to determine the sample, then lottery taking is applied with the result that X MIPA 7 and X MIPA 8 were selected. In conducting the research, a quasi-experimental method was applied in which X MIPA 7 as the experimental class and X MIPA 8 as the control class. There were 72 students as the sample of this research. This research design used one group pre-test post-test. Experimental class was taught by using PBL method and control class was taught by using conventional method. The pre-test at the beginning and the post test at the end of the treatment were administered. The collected data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. From the calculation, it was found that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05. Since Sig. (2-tailed) was lower than α = 0.05, Hi was accepted. It means that there is significant effect in using problem-based learning (PBL) method on students’ speaking ability. The implication of the findings was the control group should be enhanced by the similar method to increase their speaking ability.Key Words: Speaking, Speaking Ability, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Method

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of this quantitative research are to find out self-efficacy of SMAN English teachers in using ICT, barriers they face, as well as the way they overcome the barriers. Using cluster random sampling, 20 teachers were taken as the sample. The data were collected through questionnaire. The questionnaire was adapted from Bandura (1997) and Catarina player-koro (2012). The result of the data analysis showed that the self-efficacy of the teachers on using ICT in teaching and learning activities in SMAN Kuansing in general was at a high category level. The highest percentage (80%) in believe of the ability and knowledge possessed agreed this statement. And the highest percentage (95%) in ‘believe of the ability on the use of ICT in learning process’ strongly agreed this statement. But teachers still have problem on the use of ICT because of several factors: Such as fear of making mistake, feeling under pressure dealing with people, and teachers still lack of ICT ability. Furthermore, several recommendations were given such as finding out the factors contribute to their problem on the use of ICT, finding the best way to cope with their problem, and doing more teaching using ICT. In line with that, government should give more attention to facilities and infrastructure, to help teachers implement the established curriculum. and to be more relaxed to express their ideas through ICT.Key Words: ICT, Self-efficacy, Teacher

Abstract

Abstract: This research is intended to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of Mind Mapping Technique on the ability of the first grade students of SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. The research design was pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The samples were VII 7 students chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The Data were calculated by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the data analysis showed that mean score of the pre-test was 59,23 and the mean score of the post-test was 69,32. In other words, the mean score of the post-test was higher than pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (6.648) was higher than t-table (2.024) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of Mind Mapping Technique on the ability of the first grade students of SMPN 25 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. Several recommendations were given for students such as to read more texts, learn to distinguish the important components of the text, learn a lot of material quickly, and share information with their friend in order to get more knowledge and be more focus on increasing their vocabulary. In line with it, the teachers need to give more attention on how to improve students’ comprehension when implementing Mind Mapping in the class.

Abstract

Abstract : This research is aimed to find out the correlation between the anxiety of the second year students of English Study Program and their essay writing ability. The sample of this research is one of three classes of the second year students of English Study Program that were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of sample is 38 students. There were two types of data collected in this research: the data of anxiety and the data of essay writing ability. The anxiety data were gained by using adapted questionnaire from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope. The data of essay writing ability were gained from essay writing test based on the 2013 curriculum. The results show that the anxiety level of population is categorized into “low” level and their essay writing ability is in “good” level. The result revealed that the contribution of anxiety to students’ essay writing ability is 51 %. In conclusion, there is significant correlation between the anxiety of the second year students of English Study Program and their essay writing ability.Key Words: Correlation, Anxiety, Essay Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to discover the ability level of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending news item texts. The population of this research was all of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru, academic year 2019/2020. The numbers of sample were 25 students which were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by means reading comprehension test in the form of multiple choices by giving 8 news item texts with 40 multiple choice items. The results of the data analysis showes that the mean of the students’ score in compreheneding news item texts is 70.88. It can be concluded that the ability of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending news item texts is in good level. Based on the result of the students’ scores in each of reading comprehension component, the lowest component of reading comprehension is the ability in finding the meaning of vocabulary 52.00 and the highest one is the ability in finding inferences 80.00.Key Words: Study, Ability, News Item Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 4 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The population of the research was the eighth year students of the school. The number of the population were 332 students. Thirty five of them were the samples selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was a reading test. The total number of test items was thirty questions. The test consisted of 5 short recount texts. Each text consists of 6 questions which cover the components of reading and the components of recount text namely finding main ideas, finding factual information, finding the meaning of difficult words, finding references, finding restatements and finding social functions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good, and excellent. Based on the result showed that the students’ reading ability of the eighth year students of the school in comprehending recount texts was in good level with the mean score was 74.28. The implication of this research is that the eighth year students of the school have a good ability in reading recount texts.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Reading, Recount Texts.
