Abstract

The escalating contamination of heavy metals such as lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in wetland ecosystems poses a significant threat to environmental integrity and public health. This study aims to assess the phytoremediation potential of purun tikus (Eleocharis dulcis) for the accumulation and reduction of these heavy metals in contaminated sediment and water matrices. An experimental approach was employed wherein purun tikus specimens were cultivated for 20 days in media artificially contaminated with varying concentrations of Pb (5, 10, 15 mg/L), Zn (80, 90, 100 mg/L), and Cu (80, 90, 100 mg/L). There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the accumulation of heavy metals Pb, Zn, and Cu in the roots, stems, and leaves of purun plants between treatment times of 5, 10, 15, and 20 days. The duration of treatment did not significantly affect the ability of purun plants to accumulate these heavy metals. The descriptive differences seen although not statistically significant are likely due to the small sample size and high variability of the data. The highest removal efficiencies were observed for Pb in stems (95.97%), Zn in roots (81.59%), and Cu in stems (66.10%). These findings indicate that purun tikus exhibits selective metal uptake and distribution mechanisms coupled with high tolerance to heavy metal stress, affirming its efficacy as a phytoremediator for rehabilitating heavy metal-contaminated wetlands and supporting sustainable ecosystem management.

Abstract

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), Particulate Matter (PM10) and TSP are the most common and harmful air pollutants to humans. In short period, air pollution exposure at 5 ppm for 10 minutes to humans causes dyspnea, and when the level is increase to 800 ppm could cause 100% mortality in animals. This study was an analytical research, with cross sectional design and risk analysis. One hundred subjects were analyzed in this study. The results showed that non-cancer Hazard Index (HI) for realtime exposure with mean value was NO2: 1.85; SO2: 2.92; TSP: 7.09; and PM10: 11.7 (HI value ≥1). The results of the analysis test for FVC lung capacity to non-cancer risk estimation of NO2, SO2, TSP and PM10 indicated that there was no significant relationship (p > 0,05). Variable of smoking habit is the most dominant variable (OR = 12,542) which affect respiratory disorders. The exposure of NO2, SO2, TSP and PM10 in Palembang City bus drivers is considered risky to non-cancer health subjects, so control is needed. This control could be performed by lowering the level of inhalation intake (I) of the RfC and the first simulation model for exposure could start from the second year to the sixth year.

Abstract

Pesticide poisoning, especially paraquat, is a significant health problem for agricultural workers, including sugarcane plantation workers in Indonesia. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between pesticide use and hemoglobin levels. This study is a descriptive study to find the correlation between paraquat pesticide exposure and hemoglobin levels. Quota sampling technique was used to collect 51 samples. Data were collected through interviews, observation of the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and measurement of hemoglobin levels by laboratory methods on 51 workers exposed to paraquat pesticide. The Chi-Square test was used to analyze the relationship between the use of PPE and the level of pesticide poisoning as measured by hemoglobin levels. The results showed that incomplete use of PPE was associated with a decrease in workers' hemoglobin levels. As many as 40% of workers who did not use PPE experienced a significant decrease in hemoglobin levels compared to workers who used complete PPE. The calculated Chi-Square value is 6.45 with a p value = 0.011 (p < 0.05) which indicates a significant relationship between the use of PPE and hemoglobin levels in sugarcane plantation workers. Based on these results, it can be concluded that proper use of PPE can reduce the risk of pesticide poisoning and maintain hemoglobin levels at normal levels.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution, including lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in swamp environments, is increasing and poses a significant threat to ecosystem integrity and human health. This study aims to evaluate the phytoremediation potential of Eleocharis dulcis in accumulating heavy metals in root, stem, and leaf tissues. The experimental method involved growing Eleocharis dulcis for 20 days in media artificially contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cu metals at concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 ppm. Observations were made on metal accumulation in plant tissues on days 5, 10, 15, and 20. The results showed that concentration and duration of exposure significantly influenced the pattern of metal accumulation. The highest accumulations were recorded in leaf tissue, specifically Pb at 87.527 mg/kg, Zn at 32.93 mg/kg, and Cu at 43.522 mg/kg. These findings indicate that Eleocharis dulcis has selective metal uptake and translocation mechanisms and high tolerance to heavy metal stress, and has the potential to be an effective phytoremediation agent for the rehabilitation of heavy metal-contaminated wetlands and support sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of bentonite-Titanium dioxide (Benonite-TiO2) composite on the degradation process of methylene blue. It was carried out by synthesizing the composite through the impregnation of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) on bentonite and then characterizing the obtained compound using XRD and SEM-EDX. The results of the XRD characterization showed that there was a shift in the diffraction angle (2θ), which indicated the success of the impregnation procedure. The morphology of the composite showed that the bentonite surface had been filled with TiO2, as evidenced by the results of the EDX analysis, which showed a 7.03% increase in Titanium. Furthermore, the degradation process was carried out using various variables, including contact time, the ratio of composite weight to dye, and by irradiation with a UV lamp at a wavelength of 352 nm UV. It was discovered that the best degradation in the concentration of methylene blue occurred at a maximum contact time of 90 minutes and at a maximum weight of 10 mg of benonite-TiO2, with an effectiveness of 99.91% after irradiation and 92.26% without irradiation.

Abstract

Cr(III) is one of the most stable chromium species in nature, Cr(III) species are not carcinogenic to humans, but if the levels in the body exceed 0.2 mg / day it is very dangerous for the body especially in the respiratory tract. The presence of chromium in the aquatic environment is so low that it is very difficult to detect it using instruments with various limitations to detect it, therefore preconcentration techniques are carried out to overcome the issue. In this study the water sample was adjusted pH using HNO3 0.1 M or NaOH 0.1 M, after which it was passed in the dowex column 50WX2-200. Furthermore, an elution process was carried out using the 1 M HNO3 eluent, the eluat was measured for absorbance with flame AAS. The results of Cr(III) preconcentration optimization are: resin weight 0.5 g, HNO3 eluent concentration 1 M, solution pH 3 and sample volume 50 – 100 mL. The Cr(III) preconcentration technique using Dowex 50WX2-200 resin has been applied to river water samples with a detectable concentration of 0.0075 mg/L.
