Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the effect  of boron concentration and resin proportion on some properties of rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) particleboard. Boron concentrations used were 0, 0.25,  0.50,  0. 75 and  1.0%, and resin proportions in urea formaldehyde were 10, 12 and 14% dry weight basis. The results indicated that the addition of boron compound to porticleboard reduced the values of bending strength, internal bond strength and shear strength but increased the thickness swelling and water absorption of particleboard. Mechanical properties of particleboard  increased with the increase of resin proportion. Thickness swelling and water absorption decreased as the resin proportion  increases.  Physical and mechanical properties  of particleboard  treated with boron compound up to 1% cocentration level and bonded with urea formaldehyde  at 12% or 14% resin propotions were all  met  the  SII  standard requirements,  except  for  internal  bond  strength.  Compared  with  FAO  standard, particleboards that met all the standard requirements  were those with 14% resin proportion.

Abstract

The study on production  cost,  base price  and profit  margin was conducted in wood  working  industry  using  sawn  timber  of perupuk  (Lophopetalum spp.), meranti (Shorea spp.),   damar (Agathis  spp.)  and jangkang  (Xylopia spp.) for various joint  products. The products  were moulding, S4S. Solid  jointed  board, finger jointed board,  finger jointed stick and door jamb. There were five products of perupuk,  two of meranti, two of'jangkang and one of damar. The results of tire  study showed that  the method of joint  cost calculation used  by  the  mill was  average  cost per  unit method. Production  costs  of  jangkang  and damar  wood  working products  were higher  than  those  of  meranti  and perupuk.  The average  proponion  of  raw materials, wages and others on the total production cost was respectively 62%, 4/% and 34%. Proportion  of wage cost was small,  on the contrary, proportion of other production cost was relatively high. Among ten kinds of wood working joint products,  only three yielded  a positive profit margin,  namely,  moulding,  S4S and finger jointed board of perupuk.Based on the average cost per unit method the raw material cost, production cost and base price of S4S were lower than those of finger jointed stick. This results was irrational since the raw  material  cost  of  S4S  should   be  more  expensive  than  that  of finger jointed  stick. Consequently,  the average cost per unit method was not suitable for joint  cost  distributing method of  wood working joint  products.   Therefore.  it is suggested for replacing this method with one that considers quality and price of raw material and the product selling price.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The result of  laboratory  test of wood-wool board properties  manufactured from 8 individual wood species  obtained from  North Maluku  are  reported  in this paper.   The  tests  comprising board density,  moisture  content,   thickness  reduction  due  to  compression,   and bending  strength. The study  reveals that  the  average yield  of wood-wool  is  492. 75 kg/m3  of log  input.   The wood-wool  of  Parinari   corymbosa,   Shorea    koordersii,    Hopea   sp.   and  Horsfieldia        sylvestris  must  be  soaked   in  cold  water  for 24 hours prior  to  wood-wool board manufacture,      while the otherfour  species  do not  require   the soaking.  The physical  and mechanical  properties   of wood- wool board from  seven  wood species  mineralized   with Ca CJ 2  are in comformity with  the DIN 1 101   standard.    Only six  wood species,   however,    mineralized    with Ca(OH)2 suspension   meet  the  standard  requirement.     The  identical  commercial   name of wood not  necessarily  produce  a comparable  quality  board.   Apart  from  the  species,   growth  and  environmental   factors   are believed  to contributing  to board properties.

Abstract

One of  the  partideboard  properties that  must be tested  is internal  bond  strength  or tensile  strength  perpendicular to surface. the  testing  procedure is relatively  difficult   because  before  applying  a tension  load vertically  to the  board  face, the  specimen  must   be  adhere  to  steel  or  wood   blocks  for  seuerol hours  to obtain  good  adhesion.  To  simplify   the pro- cedure, the  use  of  another   testing procedure called shear  strength   test  was tried.  It  is found   that  there  is  a relationship between   shear strength   (X)  and  internal  bond  strength   (Y)   which  can  be expressed   by   linear  regression  equations  i.e,: Y  = -  0.105  +  0.180   X  for  interior  particleboard  and  Y =  -  0.925  + 0.398  X  for  exterior  particleboard.   The  interior particleboard  specimens were  tested   under  dry   condition  whereas  exteriorparticleboard  specimem were boiled  for  two hours  before  testing.  Both regression equations can not  be pooled,  Based  on  the  result  it can be cohcluded  that  internal bond  strength   of  particleboard  can  be estimated by  using  its shear strength value.

Abstract

Experimental   plywood (5 -  piy)  were made from  12 wood species  veneers  glued with  urea formaldehyde. Thichness of  veneer  was  1.5  mm  and  the  range  of  veneer  density   was  0.38  -   0.83 g/cm3.  Veneers  were divided  into  3 groups  based on  their  density,  i.e. low,   medium   and  high.  The  plywood properties   were  tested  according  to the  American Standard (ASTM)  and the  Japannese Standard  (JAS)  included  density.  tensile strength.  bending  strength, compression  strength,  and moisture  resistant  bonding  strength. The  results  revealed  that  plywood  density   was  higher  than  veneer  density   (same wood  species)  or average veneer density   (mixed  wood  species).   Tested  mechanical  properties of plywood  increased  if the plywood  density  increased and the relationship  could  be expressed  by  linier regression equations. The tensile strength, bending strength  and compression strength   of plywood  were  tested  both  on parallel and perpendicular to  face grain.  Correlation  coefficient  of  the relation-ship  between  plywood  density   and  those  plywood  mechanical  properties on parallel to face  grain (r = 0.66 -  0.84)  were higher  than  that  on perpendiculor  to face grain  (r = 0.51  -   0. 74). Similar results  were obtained  with F calculated  but all of  them  were  highly  significant.  Based on  those  results it could  be concluded   that some mechanical properties  of plywood could  be estimated   from  its  density, regardless   of  its wood  species.
