Abstract

Indonesia has palm oil harvesting as the most important agriculture crop. Unfortunately, this agricultural activity delivers a large amount of by product, known as palm oil mills effluent (POME). The treatment using membrane bioreactor has successfully removed the heavy organic component of POME but it left water in colour. This paper proposed the use of a single switch resonant converter with parallel load resoant with dielectric barrier discharge ozonizer to remove colour of treated POME. The ozonizer chamber was made from a planar metal dielectric barrier discharge construction. A single switch resonant converter as power supply to the chamber was designed and it is based on resonance principle. This circuit converted a direct current low voltage input into high frequency and sinusoidal voltage output. The high voltage created micro electrical discharges inside chamber to generate ozone from oxygen molecules. At atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature, the ozonizer deliver up to 2300 ppm ozone gas. The ozone gas was injected into the treated POME for several duration of time. The results of experiment showed that the treated POME water has successfully changed in colour from 100 mg/l Pt.Co into 20 mg/l Pt.Co or lower. As the time of treatment is increased then the colour abatement was below 15 mL/l Pt.Co.Keywords—

Abstract

Ozone gas (O3) is widely used in deodorization, decolourization, disinfection, bleaching processes, gas/airtreatment, chemical synthesis and recently in medicalapplications. Due the wide application of ozone then the ozonegenerator or ozonizer is urgently needed. A single switchresonant converter with ferrite transformer is proposed in thiswork. The prototype is constructed by two parts, first is ozonechamber and the second part is power converter with a singleswitch resonant converter and it supplied by photovoltaicsimulator. The converter is successful to convert 12 volt fromphotovoltaic to 1.89 kVpp high frequency voltage to ozonechamber. The ozone gas produce with the proposed system is 450ppm with oxygen as an input gas.

Abstract

The paper uses dimensional analysis to develop atheoretical prediction of the yield of a high frequency silentdischarge ozone generator at atmospheric pressure. Theexperimental work was carried out in order to verify the viability ofthe resulting yield equation, a rectangular shaped chamber with a1.5 mm air gap was constructed. Aluminium mesh electrodes wereused with metal tape and a planar mica sheet forming a dielectricbarrier. The power supply to the chamber was from a modifiedclass E resonant power inverter. It is established that predictionsusing the yield equation match closely with data obtained from theexperimental findings

Abstract

Modern electronic systems require resources with high efficiency. The efficiency of direct current to dicrect current converters as a power source can be increased by replacing a diode with MOSFET. The use of MOSFET is expected to reduce power loss as the internal resistance of MOSFET is lower than a diode. To implement the propossed idea, a boost type direct current chopper and TL494 as PWM generator circuit were applied in this work. MOSFET is used in synchronization mode to replace diode at conventional topology of chopper.. The proposed circuit and conventional topology were made and their performance were observed. The efficiency of both circuit were compared and analyzed. The result of the experiments showed that the efficiency of converter within MOSFET at synchronization mode is proportional with the increment of duty cycle, while at conventional topology the efficiency remain stable at any duty cycle. Synchronous boost converter is more efficient than nonsynchronous boost converter at duty cycle over than 40%.

Abstract

Silent discharge is the most prominent method to carry out plasma reaction because. discharge is easily initiated by injecting alternating current in high voltage to the pair of separated electrodes. The electron emission from surface of dielectric placed on instantaneous cathode is stimulated by ion induced electron emission. In this method, spark is avoided by placing insulation material to either one or both of the electrodes. In practical, it is very difficult to determine the exact limit of the voltage that initiate the discharge by mathematical analysis because it depends on many factors, namely dimensions, type and geometrical shapes of electrode, thickness of insulation, and type of electric field inside the discharge gap. To get lower initial voltage for discharge, it is important to find the best geometrical shape of electrode in relation to skin effect that trigger electron emission. This work investigates the behaviour of charges, current, electric field and voltage surrounding electrodes with various geometrical shape.Silent discharge is the most prominent method to carry out plasma reaction because. discharge is easily initiated by injecting alternating current in high voltage to the pair of separated electrodes. Abstract

Light Emitting Diode lamp or LED lamp is one of the energy saving lamps nowadays widely used by consumers. However, LED lamp has contained harmonics caused by the rectifier circuit inside the lamp. Harmonics cause a quality problem in power system. As the harmonics present in current or voltage, the waveforms are distorted. Harmonics can lead to overheating in magnetic core of electrical equipments. In this paper, several tests are carried out to investigate the harmonic content of voltage and currents, and also the level of light intensity of the two brands of LED lamps. Measurements in this study are conducted by using HIOKI Power Quality Analyzer 3197. The test results show that the total harmonic distortion or THD of voltage on various brands of LED lamps did not exceed 5% as in compliance to the limit of IEEE standard 519-1992. The largest harmonic voltage is 2.9%, while maximum harmonic current for tested brands of LED lamp is 170.6%. The use of low pass filter in the form of LC filter was proposed. Based on experimental results, the application of LC filter at input side of LED lamp has successfully reduced THD current in the range of 85%-88%.

Abstract

In general, there are two main classifications in matrix converters. The most common known type is conventional matrix converter (CMC) or direct matrix converter (DMC). The other type is indirect matrix converter (IMC). A brief review for modulation strategies are provided in this work for modulation strategies in IMC. There are several popular modulation methods for IMC such as carrier-based modulation and space vector modulation (SVM). A sinusoidal current waveform is produced on the input and output sides to implement the modulation method. In the conclusion the modulation methods will compared based on performance, theoretical complexity, and some other parameters.

Abstract

This paper describes the Z-source matrix converter (ZS-MC) topology which specifically discusses topology and control on the ZS-MC. There are two topologies on the ZS-MC, namely Z-source direct-MC (ZS-DMC) and indirect-MC (ZS-IMC). The difference of each of these topologies is in the number of switching mosfets, where ZS-DMC put on nine switches, while ZS-IMC eighteen switches. ZS-IMC topology overcomes the limitations of traditional MC voltage reinforcement and accommodates the operation of buck and boost converter by reducing the number of switches and providing high efficiency.
