Abstract

This article aims to analyze the emergence of intellectual movements in Aceh after the occurrence of Dutch colonialism and the start of modernization. As with the phenomena that emerged in the Dutch East Indies in general, the presence of the Dutch in Aceh caused traditional intellectual movements based in Islamic boarding schools to respond to modern public schools which were indicated to carry the spirit of secularism which was considered to endanger the identity of the Acehnese people. The responses that emerged were resistance, negotiation, and accommodation. The research method of this article uses a historical approach based on literature review. The author conducted a review of the literature related to research. The collected data is verified, analyzed, and reconstructed narratively. The research findings show that the intellectual group is divided into three variants, namely the resistant group, namely the traditional intellectual party based on Islamic boarding school education, the negotiative group, namely the modernist intellectual party based on madrasah education, and the accommodative group, namely the secular party based on school education. These three intellectual variants continue to play their role in the formation of social formations in Aceh. After the conflict, due to pressure from social formations, between dayah groups, madrasahs and schools, there was a contestation for dominance. As a result, modernist groups win over discourses and ideas, traditional groups become fighters for modernist ideas and discourse, and secular groups follow the wishes of traditional groups.

Abstract

This study uses the concept of religious moderation to analyze the perceptions of traditional community leaders in Lake Toba Caldera, North Sumatra on halal tourism. Toba, Samosir, Humbang Hasundutan, and Dairi are Christian-majority regions designated as priority tourist destinations by the government, with a focus on halal tourism. A qualitative method was used in this study, with interviews with traditional leaders as the primary source, supplemented by interviews with tourists and business actors, as well as observations and literature reviews. The findings, analyzed through the concept of religious moderation, revealed three perspectives on halal tourism: the first group saw it as a form of Islamization, the second had only a vague idea, and the third rejected the term itself due to its discriminatory connotations. Overall, the traditional leaders accepted halal tourism as a service for Muslim tourists but were not comfortable with the term ‘halal tourism’. This study highlights the importance of religious moderation values, with tolerance and national commitment emerging as the key indicators of religious moderation in the region.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of education in supporting women's empowerment in rural Aceh, understand the challenges they face, and see how education can be a tool to strengthen their position in the social structure without bumping up against traditional and religious values. Through a qualitative approach, this study explores the main factors that influence women's access to and participation in formal and non-formal education, including socio-cultural and economic barriers. This conceptual model identifies key components such as the role of local educational institutions, local values (such as mutual cooperation and religious teachings), and community and family support in improving access to education for women. The findings show that education has an optimal impact on women's involvement in social and economic life, allowing them to play a greater role outside the domestic sphere. However, various challenges such as conservative views and the lack of inclusive policies are still obstacles. With the existence of supportive policies and the integration of local values in education, it is hoped that women's empowerment in Aceh can be realized sustainably. This study is expected to contribute to the formulation of more inclusive education policies for women in rural Aceh.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review the main concepts of Mulla Sadra's philosophy. These ideas are the foundation of the Al-Hikmah Al-Muta'alliyah group of philosophy theory. This philosophy, along with Al-Hikmah Al-Masya'iyyah and Al-Hikmah Al-Isyraqiyah, is one of the three major groups in Islamic philosophy. This study used a descriptive analysis. The author reviews the main work of Mulla Sadra, namely Al-Hikmah Al-Muta'alliyah fil Al-Sysfar 'Aqliyah Arba'ah and another book, namely Al-Masya'ir. Secondary references are also used, such as Mulla Sadra's other works and they're relevant to the subject of study. This study attempts to identify the six concepts that make up the philosophical theory of Al-Hikmah Al-Muta'alliyah, namely: the fundamental of wujûd (Ashalat al- Wujûd), the gradation of wujûd (Tâskîkal-Wujûd), the poverty of cause (Illîyah), the simple reality (Basith al-Haqîqah), the substance movement (al-Harakah al-Jawhayiah), and the unity of subject and object (Ittihad Aqil wa Ma'qûl). These concepts demonstrate that Mulla Sadra's philosophy has strong conceptual roots and is difficult to refute. As a result, Mulla Sadra's philosophy remains one of the most influential groups of Islamic philosophy.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the existence, regulation, and function of the meunasah as a center for religious and cultural activities in society, including Islamic religious education institutions. This study uses a qualitative approach. Data were collected from literature related to research objects and field data through observation, interviews and documentation. The research findings show that the existence of meunasah is not only a cultural heritage which is the center of community activities, but also an institution that has a clear legal standing. The clarity of the legal status of the meunasah as a center for various community activities departs from the special status of Aceh as an autonomous region. The existence of meunasah is a local translation for educational activities in the Muslim world community, especially from the Middle East, namely madrasas. The word meunasah is also an adaptation of the tongue of the Acehnese people from the word madrasa. By regulation, various qanuns have been stipulated regarding the existence of the meunasah. Among the important functions of the meunasah is the implementation of Islamic religious education. The existence of religious education institutions in meunasah in agrarian societies is part of the hierarchy of the traditional education system. Meanwhile in urban areas, the existence of meunasah as educational institutions is a center of recitation such as center for religious studies and center for the study of the Qur'an.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the mystical dimensions of the pajonjong bagas ceremony, a series of rituals in building a new house, as part of the culture of the Batak Angkola community. In this traditional ceremony, several rituals contain mystical elements, to influence the beliefs of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Based on the qualitative study, an ethnographic approach was employed, with data obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of the entire pajonjong bagas ceremonial processes in the Batang Angkola sub-district, South Tapanuli. The results showed that the pajonjong bagas encompassed a high philosophical value and were highly beneficial for the community, specifically for those establishing new houses and still deeply rooted in local traditions or wisdom. However, several elements of the rituals were not explicitly studied or significant in the teachings of Islam. Various symbols were also used in the ceremony, such as coconut, sugarcane and palm sugar, chayote, and banana symbolizing usefulness, sweet speech actualization, continuity, and coolness. All these symbols were assembled and hung on the rabung bukkulan, a wooden structure used as a framework. This cultural accommodation was subsequently associated with local and Sufi mysticism.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the development of Islamic religious education in Aceh. This qualitative research uses literature review to collect data. The data obtained is analyzed, verified and presented. Research findings show that the early Islamic educational institutions in Aceh were a transformation of the Hindu era education system where the learning media did not experience significant changes. The first recorded Islamic educational institution in Aceh was Zawiyah Cot Kala in Aramiyah, Bayeun, East Aceh which was under the Peureulak Sultanate. Next Dayah Blang Pria in Samudra Pasai. Then Jami'ah Baiturrahman and Dayah Syiah Kuala during the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate. Entering the modern period, Islamic religious education is carried out by various Islamic organizations such as Madrasah Khairiyah by Tuanku Raja Keumala, Madrasah Sa'adah Abadiyah by Daud Beureueh and Abdullah Ujong Rimba, Madrasah Ahlussunnah Waljamaah by Sayyid Husain Syihab, Al-Islam College by Teungku Abdurrahman Seulimum, Jamiah Al-Muslim by Teungku Abdurrahman Meunasah Meucap, and the Normal Islamic Institute. After independence, there were several modern educational institutions such as Madrasah Ulumul Qur'an (MUQ) Langsa, Islamic Boarding School Darul Faqih Qur'ani, Islamic Boarding School Insyafuddin, Islamic Boarding School Jeumala Amal, and several other educational institutions. All these modern educational institutions mutually improve the quality of religious learning as well as general science learning.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the development of philosophical Sufism of the Wahdat al-Wujūd school or in Malay-Nusantara term called Wujūdiyya. The research approach uses descriptive analysis. The research data use references related to the Wahdat al-Wujūd study. The research findings show that the essence of Sufism is philosophical Sufism. In the early days, philosophical Sufism focused on the philosophical meaning of some verses of Al-Qur’an. The early generations of philosophical Sufism were taught, among others, by Rabi’ah al-Adawiyah and Sufyān ats-Tsaurī. The philosophical study of Sufism was started by Dhu’nūn al-Misrī. Then followed by Abū Yazid al-Bistamī with Hulūl teachings and Abū Mansūr al-Hallaj with Ittihad teachings. The teachings of Hulūl and Ittihad were then questioned by ‘Ain al-Qudhad Hamadanī, because these concepts necessitate duality, even though Wahdat al-Wujūd does not accept dual existence. ‘Urafā at that time did not have adequate language tools to teach Wahdat al-Wujūd. It was only at the time of Ibn ‘Arabī that Wahdat al-Wujūd could be explained systematically and holistically, because at the time of Ibn ‘Arabī, philosophical language was very mature thanks to al-Hikmah al-Masya’iyyah, especially by Ibn Sīnā.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the theological beliefs that have an impact on the formation of political movements and political movements that realize theological schools. This study uses a qualitative approach. The source of the study comes from related references, particularly regarding the development of theology in Islam and its relation to power politics. The findings of the article show that differences in understanding of theology have created the emergence of many groups. Every theological thought has its own argumentation basis. Differences in theological understanding are determined by the understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith. Differences in the meaning of religion are largely determined by reasoning ability and the patron of religious authority that is followed. Each group builds political power to defend and spread its theological understanding. In the early generations, religious patrons had a great opportunity to lead their group's political movements. In the period of its development, the spread of theological schools needed to be integrated with politics. In contrast to the early generations, in later periods, the development of theology depended on the ability of religious authorities to offer an integrative meaning of religion with political power.
