Abstract

This article aims to redefine the word ḍaraba in the Qur'an Surah An-Nisā’ 34. Some interpreters and jurists say that beating a wife is permissible if she leaves her obligations as a wife (nushūz) on the condition that it is in the context of education and does not injure or cause injury. Some other interpreters argue that the meaning of ḍaraba is a metaphor, that is, it does not mean hitting. However, this problem does not just end because the understanding of the mufassir who interprets ḍaraba as an order to hit is clear in the language rules, namely literal meaning. Thus, the debate over the license to beat one's wife in Islam is still a polemic and Islam is still imaged as a religion that gives a license to beat one's wife. This image makes it difficult for Islam to harmonize with modern humanism and it becomes almost impossible for ethical values in Islam to be offered as part of the values of modern humanism. This qualitative research examines the literature related to the research focus and interviews religious experts, especially commentators, to solve research problems. Interpretation of the review of the word ḍaraba is carried out through text analysis using a spiritual hermeneutic approach as systematized by Abdul Hadi WM and strengthened by the understanding of religious experts through interviews. The research findings show that the spirit of Surah An-Nisā’ 34 is in accordance with the spirit of humanism, especially regarding emancipation and gender equality. But the meaning of ḍaraba needs to be resolved through spiritual hermeneutics. So, even though it has an ontological basis that is different from modern humanism, Islamic values can be in harmony with modern humanism through this approach.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the emergence of intellectual movements in Aceh after the occurrence of Dutch colonialism and the start of modernization. As with the phenomena that emerged in the Dutch East Indies in general, the presence of the Dutch in Aceh caused traditional intellectual movements based in Islamic boarding schools to respond to modern public schools which were indicated to carry the spirit of secularism which was considered to endanger the identity of the Acehnese people. The responses that emerged were resistance, negotiation, and accommodation. The research method of this article uses a historical approach based on literature review. The author conducted a review of the literature related to research. The collected data is verified, analyzed, and reconstructed narratively. The research findings show that the intellectual group is divided into three variants, namely the resistant group, namely the traditional intellectual party based on Islamic boarding school education, the negotiative group, namely the modernist intellectual party based on madrasah education, and the accommodative group, namely the secular party based on school education. These three intellectual variants continue to play their role in the formation of social formations in Aceh. After the conflict, due to pressure from social formations, between dayah groups, madrasahs and schools, there was a contestation for dominance. As a result, modernist groups win over discourses and ideas, traditional groups become fighters for modernist ideas and discourse, and secular groups follow the wishes of traditional groups.

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the concept of wujūd in Islamic philosophy, including the Peripatetic (al-Ḥikmat al-Mashā’iyyat) and Illuminationist (al-Ḥikmat al-Ishrāq) schools. The study employs a discourse analysis approach, using data collected from an analysis of Islamic philosophy literature with a focus on the concept of wujūd in these two schools. The findings of the study show that despite using the same term, the concept of external reality has different meanings in different schools of Islamic philosophy. The Peripatetic school interprets wujūd as the basis of reality, but its extension varies depending on the differences in māhiyat (essence). The Illuminationist school, on the other hand, interprets wujūd as an addition to external reality, as the fundamental element is māhiyat. One of the novel contributions of this study is to highlight the sensitivity of the concept of essence in Islamic ontology, as evidenced by the different meanings of wujūd in the two schools of Islamic philosophy. However, both schools agree that wujūd is manifested as a mental reality, a predication for māhiyat. In mental reality, the fundamental element is māhiyat.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the mystical dimensions of the pajonjong bagas ceremony, a series of rituals in building a new house, as part of the culture of the Batak Angkola community. In this traditional ceremony, several rituals contain mystical elements, to influence the beliefs of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Based on the qualitative study, an ethnographic approach was employed, with data obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of the entire pajonjong bagas ceremonial processes in the Batang Angkola sub-district, South Tapanuli. The results showed that the pajonjong bagas encompassed a high philosophical value and were highly beneficial for the community, specifically for those establishing new houses and still deeply rooted in local traditions or wisdom. However, several elements of the rituals were not explicitly studied or significant in the teachings of Islam. Various symbols were also used in the ceremony, such as coconut, sugarcane and palm sugar, chayote, and banana symbolizing usefulness, sweet speech actualization, continuity, and coolness. All these symbols were assembled and hung on the rabung bukkulan, a wooden structure used as a framework. This cultural accommodation was subsequently associated with local and Sufi mysticism.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the songs of love revealed by Al-Hallaj in Qadisah and Muqattaat. The two titles are a set of Al-Hallaj sufistic love songs that have been collected and published by Louis Massignon, a French orientalist who dedicated a large part of his life to studying Al-Hallaj texts. The author uses relevant references in analyzing Al-Hallaj songs. The search results show that Al-Hallaj's teachings which are far from being rational on the surface turned out to contain meaningful wisdom. Al-Hallaj shows, only with the search for entitlement into self, then the Absolute Reality called Al-Haqq can be found, realized and believed to be the only True Reality.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the existence, regulation, and function of the meunasah as a center for religious and cultural activities in society, including Islamic religious education institutions. This study uses a qualitative approach. Data were collected from literature related to research objects and field data through observation, interviews and documentation. The research findings show that the existence of meunasah is not only a cultural heritage which is the center of community activities, but also an institution that has a clear legal standing. The clarity of the legal status of the meunasah as a center for various community activities departs from the special status of Aceh as an autonomous region. The existence of meunasah is a local translation for educational activities in the Muslim world community, especially from the Middle East, namely madrasas. The word meunasah is also an adaptation of the tongue of the Acehnese people from the word madrasa. By regulation, various qanuns have been stipulated regarding the existence of the meunasah. Among the important functions of the meunasah is the implementation of Islamic religious education. The existence of religious education institutions in meunasah in agrarian societies is part of the hierarchy of the traditional education system. Meanwhile in urban areas, the existence of meunasah as educational institutions is a center of recitation such as center for religious studies and center for the study of the Qur’an.
