Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the maxims flouted by the major characters, the realization of sarcasm based on the scene, and the reasons for sarcastic utterances found in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2” using a pragmatics study. The study was conducted using a textual research. The data of this study were taken from the transcripts of “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. The data of this study were the sarcastic utterances that appeared in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. The data analysis was taken by coding and developing theme from the data based on the theory proposed by Braun and Clarke. The findings indicated that all four maxims were flouted by the major characters in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. In addition, there were several sarcastic utterances in which the characters flouted more than one maxim. Based on the research results, the most frequently flouted maxim was the maxim of quality. It could be seen that the situations in which sarcasm appeared in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2” mostly occurred at night. Then, it was also found that all purposes of sarcasm were present in the sarcastic utterances. There were even several sarcastic utterances which served more than one purpose. Sarcasm which served as an evaluation was most frequently used by the characters in order to hide the negative effects of their criticism and also to create the positive effects of their sarcastic praise towards their interlocutors

Abstract

The thesis deals with Conflict of The Main Character In Pariban: Idola dari Tanah Jawa Movie. The objectives of this study were to find out the type of conflicts that faced by Halomoan as the main character in the Pariban : Idola  dari Tanah Jawa movie and to find out the causes of conflict itself. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were movie and the script. The researcher found that the causes of conflict experienced by Halomoan as the main character in Pariban Idola Dari Tanah Jawa Movie, among others, were his condition and his surroundings, which made him under pressure, differences in opinion with the people around him, and competition. All of it is based on Hunt and Metcalf's (1996: 97) theory about conflict.

Abstract

This research aims were to describe the types of presupposition used by the Parhata in Batak Toba wedding ceremony and to reveal the realization of presupposition in Parhata’s spoken words in Batak Toba wedding ceremony based on Yule’s framework (2000). In this study the researcher adapted textual analysis (Mc Kee, 2013) to analyze the data. The sources of the data were two videos of wedding ceremonies of Batak Toba. The data were taken from the script of Parhata’s spoken words during the wedding ceremonies. The current research findings showed that the existential presupposition was dominantly used in Parhata’s spoken words. As the mediator and informant in the wedding ceremony, Parhata tended to utter in positive statements. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata’s utterances was recognized according to the theme of presupposition in Yule’s framework. Moreover, the six types of presupposition found in the current research although the findings from wedding ceremony video one and wedding ceremony video two as following; 40 existential presuppositions, five factive presuppositions, two non-factive presuppositions, four lexical presuppositions, one structural presupposition and two counterfactual presuppositions. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata’s utterances was identified by the characteristics of each presupposition, such as mentioning an entity or stating contrary to the fact.
