Abstract

This article examines history collapse of the Soviet Union with Ibn Khaldun's ashabiyah theory. The Soviet Union was first communist nation founded in 1922 after fall of the Russian-Monarchy due to the crisis and saparatist movement in 1917. Post World War II, the Soviet Union became a center of the communist movement around the world, and advanced in industrial sector, known as a superpower nation in the 20th century beside the United States. However, the Soviet Union was declared collapsed in 1991. This article found that Ibn Khaldun's ashabiyah can explain history of the Soviet Union in three stages of state metamorphosis; formation, glory, and collapse. Ashabiyah means a bond that unites the people, but it can be positive and negative. Analysis with negative ashabiyah, concluded that the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Soviet Union was due to the denial of this philosophical teaching to create the privileges of the Communist Party became an authoritarian regime, and considered irrelevant and opposed by society. Authoritarianism happaned because of exclusivism and cult, and could occur in non-communist nations, including Indonesia in the New Order era, this shows that it is not ideology that created of authoritarian regimes, but political practices in specific nations.

Abstract

Benchmarks for ideality for the body that prioritize aspects of physical appearance as well as social demands of the Sasak people who determine women should be able to nyesek or make sesek cloth as a source of value and meaning to the body. This article aims to examine the centrality of the body to explain how the discourse of nyesek is used as a benchmark of female maturity and as a standardization of the ideal wife in the Sasak tribe. This research tries to identify various traditional discourses in the Sasak tribe and study how these discourses function to discipline women. This study also tries to see the views of Sasak women, both the older generation and the younger generation, about the concept of nyesek. This research applies a qualitative descriptive approach. Data obtained through interviews with Sasak women in the range (18-80s). Since most sesek weavers are elderly who can only use the Sasak language, interpreting it into Indonesian requires an interview with a young Sasak tribe. This research seeks to show that the ability of nyesek to be learned by Sasak women not only serves to preserve tradition, but also to encourage women to have an economic role in the family. That is because most of the respondents interviewed were farmers' wives, nyesek was considered as an additional family income, even though its contribution was still small. This research is important because there are still many Sasak women who are not aware of the existence of body control through the discourse contained in the nyesek tradition.

Abstract

The exploitation that occurs in nature is a form of domination that is considered to have a relationship with the dominance that occurs in women because the exploitation of nature goes hand in hand with the oppression of women. Nature causes more and more damage, and women get the impact of that damage that leads them to fight against fundamental issues related to their survival. This paper raises the issue of environmental degradation experienced by women bamboo weaving and their active involvement in maintaining natural resources that act as their source of life. This research is a qualitative research conducted in Cimahpar Village, Girijaya Cianjur, West Java, with data obtained from observations, FGDs, and interviews. The data is focused on the perspective of eco-feminism, namely by examining more deeply the dominance experienced by women who are bamboo craft weaver and their efforts to prevent environmental damage and loss for their living. The results show that woman bamboo craft weavers are aware of protecting their environment, which is manifested by fighting against the attempts to destroy the bamboo ecosystem, leading to landslides. To maintain the bamboo ecosystem, the women of Cimahpar continue to utilize bamboo for various purposes. Subsequently, they protect their environment for their living

Abstract

This research focuses on Joseph Conrad’s Almayer’s Folly  to explain the circumstance which leads to the rejection of Mrs. Almayer and Nina Almayer to embrace the dominant race and the reason why these characters choose to remain within ‘Othered’ identity. This study employs Ricoeur’s hermeneutics that applies two steps of reading: distantiation to obtain an objective understanding of the novel and an appropriation through putting the objective understanding of the novel in the socio-cultural context. This study attempts to offer the term “anti-mimicry”, borrowing Bhabha’s term’ to explain the subjectivity of the female character who stand out against the white domination to resist through savage and barbarous manners to mock the dominator, the white. Through the refusal to mimic, Conrad provides a space for Malay women consciousness to develop her subjectivity that could be construed as Conrad’s ambiguous perspective to white superiority in the colonialized era.

Abstract

Developing the observation of the intensity of students' engagement with digital texts, which tend to increase significantly during the pandemic Covid-19, this research raises questions on the cognitive poetics process and experiences in readers' engagement with digital fiction. Of such phenomenon, this research applies cognitive poetics, which refers to the appreciation of the texts experiencing artistic enjoyment and creativity. In the context of digital fiction, this research assumes that readers experience mental immersion and create some forms of transportation. Subsequently, this research studies the readers' immersion in narratives and identifies forms of transportation as a conceptual metaphor projected to different media. This research applies qualitative content analysis to the data obtained from a survey posted on social media. Data are analyzed based on the trend and generalized to identify the causal relationship between the act of reading, the sensory immersion, and the forms of transportation. Adopting cognitive psychology theory, this research argues that readers' immersion process in digital fiction is not holistic and stable. Instead, it is a situation creating different forms and intensities. The result shows that digital text variations and the freedom of expression provide a space for readers to project the conceptual metaphor into various forms of transportation, which can be supportive and persuasive.

Abstract

The term good-looking is still used in the labor recruitment process in recent years. Especially in the recruitment of bank employees in Indonesia. Bank employees in Indonesia often get the stereotype that "bank staff must be beautiful”. So, this study describes the representation of good-looking bank employees in Indonesia. From this representation, this study also explains that the term good-looking is a term that practices beauty standards in society. This study used qualitative methods and took the data from informal conversations with several informants. In this study, researchers applied the theory of post-feminism, namely beauty myth, and also used Foucault's theory of power relations. The results of this study show that some banking agencies do facilitate their employees in caring for and maintaining physical appearance. It also proves that a good-looking bank employee is according to social beauty standards (ideal height and weight, langsat skin, makeup, and others). This proves that the standard practice of beauty in women is still thriving in society, even in a job or career, not in the entertainment field.
