Abstract

Menulis merupakan salah satu keahlian penting yang harus di kuasai oleh siswa. Siswa sering mendapatkan masalah dalam menulis teks analytical exposition yang sesuai dengan generic structure dan grammar. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui kualitas kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition ditinjau dari segi grammar dan the generic structure (thesis statement, argument, and reiteration). Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan rubrik skor yang diadopsi dari Rosenwaser dan writing expository assessment untuk menganalisis kualitas grammar dan the generic structure siswa dalam melulis teks analytical exposition. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 2 MAN 3 Sungai Penuh. Sampel penilitian ini berjumlah 37 orang yang dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan sebuah instrumen berupa tes menulis teks analytical exposition. Dalam menulis teks analytical exposition, peneliti menyediakan tiga topik yang berbeda sebagai pilihan untuk siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition. Waktu yang diberikan kepada siswa dalam membuat teks analytical exposition adalah 90 menit. Hasil dari tulisan siswa tersebut digunakan sebagai data dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, kualitas kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition ditinjau dari segi grammar adalah good (27,02%), excellent (10,81%), dan poor (5,40%). Ditinjau dari segi generic structure, hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa 75,69% siswa tidak mengalami kesulitan dalam menggembangkan ide pokok dalam thesis statement. Sebanyak 45,94% siswa tidak mampu mengembangkan ide menjadi uraian pendapat pada paragraf argumentation. Selanjutnya, 56,75% siswa mengalami masalah dalam menyatakan kembali uraian uraian pendapat sebelumnya. Dengan kata lain, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kualitas kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition di tinjau dari segi generic structure adalah good (56,75%) yaitu berkisar pada angka 60-79.

Abstract

This article aimed to describe the use of word mapping technique in teaching speaking for Tour and Travel Department Students of Vocational High School. Word mapping is a technique in teaching speaking that can engage students to speak intensively and to share their ideas in a fun way. This technique can be done by group and individual. Word Mapping is a technique that can motivate the students to share their ideas and speak in the teaching and learning process in describing tourism object and tourism destination. Word Mapping is a suitable technique that can be used in teaching speaking to tour and travel department students in vocational high school. It is an important technique that improves the way to record information, supports ideas, and enhances creative problem solving as they hold information in a format that the students’ mind finds easy to remember and quick to review. It makes easier for the students to share their ideas in speaking. Therefore, students will more active in teaching and learning process and give the good response to the material and topic that is taught by the teacher.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to describe the quality of multimedia (PowerPoint and video) used by English teachers at SMAN 01 Kamang Magek and also to find out the problems which faced by the English teachers in constructing multimedia in learning and teaching process. This research was an evaluating research. The subject of this research was all of the English teachers and the document files (softcopy of PowerPoint and video which was used by the teachers). The data was collected through the evaluation checklist which was used in order to know the quality of multimedia (PowerPoint and video) used by the English teachers and the interview and observation was aimed to know the the problems which faced by the English teachers in constructing PowerPoint and video in learning and teaching process. In the evaluation checklist, there were two categories in evaluating the quality of PowerPoint and video; they were the quality in its content and the presentation. Based on the finding of the research, it was found that teh PowerPoint had very good quality in its content and the presentation had good quality. Besides that, the video had very good quality in its content and its presentation. In addition, it was found that the English teachers had lack ability in constructing the PowerPoint and video and also in using the technological devices of multimedia.

Abstract

Writing is a very complex skill and difficult to master. Difficulties in writing can be seen in various aspects of writing. There are various factors that cause difficulties in writing. This study aims to analyze the kind of writing difficulties faced by English teachers. In addition, this study also identifies factors that cause writing difficulties, namely psychological, socio-cultural, and linguistic factors. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. Data were collected from 5 English teachers who teach at SMKN 8 Padang. In collecting data, the teachers were asked to write an academic essay with the topic of English for vocational high school students. To find out the factors that cause teacher difficulties in writing, data were collected through interviews. The results of the study aimed at teachers faced difficulties in every aspect of writing. they were difficulties in contents, organization, language use, and vocabulary. Then, the dominant factors that cause writing difficulties were psychological factors.

Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of genre text that is learned by english department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The students must be able to write this genre text. The aim of this study is to analyze the ability of students in writing an analytical exposition text.  It was a descriptive quantitative research conducted for third semester English departments students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research focused on how is the students’ ability in writing the thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence of analytical exposition text. The population of this research is third semester English department of Unicersitas Negeri Padang, and the sample was from educational class, it was K-3 class which consists of 20 students. the students were asked to write analytical exposition text and then students’ writing were analyzed by using the rubric of analytical exposition text which consists of four aspect, that are thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence. Based on the findings, there are four students who are in excellent level, five students in proficient level, ten students in fair level, and one student in inadequate level. Overall, the ability of third semester English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang is in proficient level.

Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of using songs to teach English to young learners. The songs that can be used are popular songs for young learners. At the beginning of the activity, teacher introduces the lyrics that will be sung.  The lyrics of the song should be compared with the topic. The activity of singing a song can be followed by another activities which the activities can improve their confidence. There are some advantages in teaching English through songs like various activities in the classroom, fun, and alive, also the young learners be active and confidence. Then, songs can improve the young learner’s skill in memorizing new words and pronouncing clearly. Using songs as the activity in teaching English help the teacher to build an active and interesting class.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the speaking ability of students of PGSD international class along with the type of speaking difficulty found by the students. The researcher chose year 2019 of PGSD international class as the sample consists of 20 students. A speaking test in the form of interview from UPT Bahasa Universitas Negeri Padang was used in collecting the data. As the result, the speaking ability of the students were 70% fair and 30% very poor. 14 out of 20 students were in fair and 6 out of 20 were in very poor. Then, comprehension is in 23,6% as the highest percentage of students’ kind of difficulty. It is suggested to the lecturers in international class of PGSD 2019 to provide the students some extra classes of English so that they can perform the better speaking ability during the use of English as the medium in the class.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the difficulties of 2019 English Department students of UNP (Universitas Negeri Padang) that learn English speaking through online learning during COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher chose English department students’ year 2019 as the sample and the total is 45 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire and speaking test. Results of analysis showed that vocabulary (93.3%) and fluency (93.3%) were the predominant problem that causes their difficulty in speaking English. The problem of technology (91.75%) such as no strong and stable signal, insufficient facilities, limited knowledge on using the application and limited money to buy the internet quota also seriously worsened their performance in speaking English and increased their low participation (73.3%). The findings suggest pedagogical implications for promoting the students’ speaking English and provide the good internet facilities and other networking support systems if online learning will be applied in the future.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ speaking ability and then investigate the causes of their problems in speaking. The population of this research was the 12th grade of natural science consists of 92 students. The sample was taken through proportional random sampling and the number of the sample was 30 students. The instrument of this research was speaking test in the form of role play and interview. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ speaking ability was in the poor category and they faced some problems related to grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Then, their problems in speaking were caused by teaching materials, teaching techniques, and teaching media. For teaching materials, 70% of respondents said that grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciations were a source of problems, they did not understand grammar because grammar had many rules, they did not have enough vocabulary because they did not get new vocabulary when learning and for pronunciations, they did not know how to pronounce words correctly. Then for the teaching technique, 73% of respondents said that this was due to a lack of speaking practice in class and also due to an inappropriate teaching style where the teacher only focused on completing the material so there was not much communication in class. Then for the teaching media, 63% of respondents said that the teacher did not provide an example of how to pronounce a word. The findings suggest pedagogical implications for promoting the students to speak English such as the teachers joining the training or workshop to improve their teaching materials, teaching method, and teaching media. Then, teach the component of speaking; grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation specifically with appropriate techniques, and give more opportunities for the students to express themselves by giving various spoken English activities. Finally, the school should develop a more effective English-speaking environment by making an English club.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ reading ability and the causes of problems in reading English at SMA Pembangunan Padang. The population of this research was the 12th grade of natural science students of SMA Pembangunan Padang consist of 92 students. The sample was taken through proportional random sampling and the number was 30 students. The instruments of this research were the reading test and interview. Result of the analysis showed that the students’ reading abilities were at in inadequate and failing category and they have problems with determining main idea, making inference, reference, understanding vocabulary, detail information, factual and negative factual information. Then, the factors that cause their reading problems are literal comprehension (trouble in identifying the main idea from a long text and the location of main idea, trouble in differentiating the main idea from the supporting details), inferential comprehension (trouble in understanding the content of the text and figure the conclusion of the text), vocabulary knowledge (vocabulary limitation, don't understand pronouns), critical thinking (trouble in understanding implied information, hard to determine the information referred to in a pronoun, trouble in determine which statement is true or false), and classroom environment that dealt with quality of teaching (teacher doesn’t teach new vocabulary specifically and unclear explanation to help them able to make the inference). The findings suggest pedagogical implications for the promoting the EFL learners’ reading ability.
