Abstract

Abstract

Probiotics application in aquaculture sector has been promoted since the government has banned antibiotics application in aquaculture sector. Probiotics are very useful in aquaculture because it can accelerate fish growth, improve fish health, and maintain water quality in good condition. However, there are many fish farmers who do not know the advantages, manufacturing techniques and the application of probiotics to support aquaculture activities. Therefore, we have conducted this community service for fish farmers in Meunasah Sukon Village, Lembah Sabil District, Southwest Aceh Regency. This community service is carried out through counseling by describing the benefits of probiotics, followed by discussions with participants and probiotics practice using natural ingredients that are easily available. The result showed that the level of understanding and knowledge of fish farmers in this village about the benefits of probiotics, how to manufacture and its application were increases after this community service was conducted. The activities of enhancement fish farmer capacities are needed to improve their abilities about information on aquaculture renewable technology.

Abstract

Bileh fish (Rasbora s.) is a freshwater species with high economic value and strong potential to be developed as an aquaculture commodity through domestication efforts to reduce exploitation pressure on wild populations. One of the key environmental factors influencing the success of domestication is rearing temperature, as it directly affects physiological processes and metabolic activity in fish. This study aimed to evaluate the growth response of bileh fish juveniles reared at different temperatures under controlled aquaculture conditions. The experiment was conducted at the Hatchery of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Teuku Umar University, from July to August 2025 for a period of 40 days. A Completely Randomized Design was applied with four temperature treatments, namely 20°C (P1), 24°C (P2), 28°C (P3), and 32°C (P4), each with three replications. The observed parameters included absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, relative growth rate, and water quality parameters (temperature and pH). The results demonstrated that rearing temperature had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the growth performance of bileh fish juveniles. Optimal growth was achieved at 24°C (P2), with an absolute weight gain of 0.45 g, an absolute length gain of 2.1 cm, and a relative growth rate of 1.13%. In contrast, the 32°C treatment resulted in the lowest growth performance and greater pH variability (6–8). Temperature plays a critical role in fish metabolism, where excessively high temperatures increase energy demands for maintaining homeostasis, thereby limiting energy allocation for growth. Therefore, a rearing temperature of 24°C is recommended as the optimal condition for the culture of bileh fish juveniles.

Abstract

Intensive cultivation of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is now being developed inthe aquaculture industry in Indonesia. Efforts to increase the success of whiteleg shrimpcultivation continue made by business actors including BPBAP Ujung Batee. This study aimsto analyze the growth rate of whiteleg shrimp intensively cultivated in HDPE and concreteround pond media at BPBAP Ujung Batee. The results of this study can be used as informationand references regarding the selection of the right container for intensive whiteleg shrimpcultivation. The study was conducted from June to August 2024. The method in this study wasa survey method, where data collection was carried out through direct observation in the field. The parameters observed in this study were Mean Body Weight (MBW), Average DailyGrowth (ADG), biomass, survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). In addition, measurements of water quality parameters were also carried out in the form of temperature,pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), salinity, ammonia, alkalinity, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate. Theresults of the study showed that the MBW, ADG, Biomass, and SR values of vaname shrimpcultivated in concrete pond media were higher than those in HDPE ponds. The results alsoshowed that the FCR value in concrete ponds (1.4) was lower than the FCR in HDPE ponds(1.5). This means that the FCR of concrete ponds is better than the FCR of HDPE ponds. Waterquality parameters showed different results between HDPE ponds and concrete ponds. InHDPE ponds, the water quality parameters that were in the optimal range were pH, DO, andphosphate, while in concrete ponds they were temperature, DO, and phosphate.

Abstract

Seurukan fish (Osteochilus vittatus) is a freshwater fish of economic value whose supply still relies heavily on wild catches. In aquaculture, particularly during grading, transportation and research, anaesthetics are needed to reduce stress and to improve survival. Common synthetic anaesthetics may leave residues and harm the environment, so that safe natural alternatives are required. Clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum L.), which contains eugenol, is known to have anaesthetic and sedative properties in fish. This study aimed to determine the effect and the optimal dose of clove oil as a natural anaesthetic for seurukan juveniles. It was conducted in October 2025 at the Hatchery of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Teuku Umar University, using a completely randomised design with four treatments and three replications: a control without clove oil (P0) and doses of 0.02 ml/L (P1), 0.04 ml/L (P2) and 0.06 ml/L (P3). The parameters observed were induction and sedative time, blood glucose, operculum opening frequency, survival and water quality. Clove oil had no significant effect on survival or blood glucose (P>0.05), but it lowered the operculum opening frequency and accelerated induction. A dose of 0.04 ml/L was the most effective, giving an optimal anaesthetic response, a good recovery time and the highest survival (96.67%).
