Abstract

The role of coastal communities in the preservation of coral reefs is an important thing to supporting the sustainable management of coastal areas. This article is objected to determine the coastal communities’ role in the management of coral reefs in water conservation areas and the level of knowledge of the coastal communities about the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires, direct interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and the results were elaborated based on descriptive analysis. The results showed that the community had begun to realize how important it is to protect coral reefs for the sustainability of fisheries and other benefits of coral reefs. Healthy reefs provide many benefits to people including improving the economy of the community and increasing tourists. Community awareness is shown by their participation in activities that lead to the conservation and management of coral reefs such as transplantation of coral reefs, beach cleaning, banner making, tree planting and provision of trash bins along the coast. Those who knew the benefits and functions of coral reefs both for increasing fish populations, increasing tourists and improving the economy of the community, as well as other benefits of coral reefs for the coastal areas, was 74.5%. The role of community in the aspects of coastal and marine ecosystems management was high, as many as 72% of the community participate in every coastal and marine ecosystem management activity carried out by the government and local NGOs.

Abstract

 Production and decomposition of mangrove litter could contribute organic matter and nutrients to the coastal waters. This study was to estimate the extent to which the rehabilitated mangrove of Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia alba contribute organic matter. This study was conducted from November 2015 to January 2016. Litter traps were used to collect the litter production and litterbags to measure decomposition rates. The results showed that the average of litter production for Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora mucronata was 4,38 g.m-2.day-1 and 3,61 g.m-2.day-1, respectively. However, Sonneratia alba apparently showed higher decay rates compare with Rhizophora mucronata. Nutrients element (N and P) released were 321,2 kg.ha-1.years-1 and 47,45 kg.ha-1.years-1 for Sonneratia alba; and 131,4 kg.ha-1.years-1 and 13,14 kg.ha-1.years-1 for Rhizophora mucronata. Overall, this study indicated that the mangrove rehabilitation in the area study contributed insignificantly carbon restocking the affected area, although it was able to provide ecological functions of this mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract

Plastic waste in the sea is a global problem that directly harms the marine environment (damaging marine ecosystems and threatening the lives of marine organisms), and can indirectly interfere with human health and life. This activity aims to provide knowledge to students at State Elementary School 6 Meulaboh West Aceh about the impact of plastic waste on the marine environment and human life indirectly, as well as instilling an awareness of the importance of keeping the sea clean from an early age. This activity was carried out using the lecture method and interactive discussion with the students of State Elementary School 6 Meulaboh West Aceh. The output of this activity is to increase the awareness of elementary school students about the importance of keeping the marine environment clean and not littering. At the end of the activity, the distribution of tumblers and trash cans was carried out to minimize the use of plastic and provide a garbage disposal container at State Elementary School 6 Meulaboh. With this educational activity, students have been provided with knowledge from an early age about the importance of keeping the marine environment clean from plastic waste, so that in students there is a passion not to throw garbage into the sea or that ends up in the sea because of the large environmental impact that will arise if the polluted sea.

Abstract

Corona virus (COVID-19) is a type of deadly virus with a fast spreading process. This virus infects the human respiratory tract. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, all activities must follow the health protocols published by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, such as social distancing, wearing masks and washing hands. The aim of this study is to provide understanding to the Kuala Bubon fishing community regarding health protocols as an effort to prevent COVID-19 and to provide touchless hand washer assistance to make it easier for people to do health protocols. This study which is a part of community service activity was conducted by using the lecture/mentoring method. The output of the activity is an increase of public awareness to always follow health protocols to every activity. The activity received a positive response from the local community. This can be seen from the enthusiasm of the community in participating in this community service activity.

Abstract

Mitigation of climate change is a business activity to reduce the risk of increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, gases can occur naturally in the environment and can also arise due to human activities. Mangroves are carbon-rich ecosystems and have an important role in climate regulation, namely by their ability to store large amounts of carbon as an effort to offset anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Mangrove ecosystems are able to store high carbon which is useful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mangrove ecosystems are also able to store carbon three to four times greater than ordinary tropical forests. The activity was carried out in Lhok Bubon Village, Samatiga District, West Aceh District. This activity was attended by the academic community of FPIK UTU with 50 participants. The method of implementing community service activities used was counseling and demonstration methods with students through planting 100 mangrove stems, namely Rhizopora sp. Protecting the mangrove ecosystem is our common awareness, especially students as the next generation of the nation, one of which is by not cutting down mangrove trees to be used as firewood or charcoal, opening up ponds and destroying the original habitat of mangrove ecosystems that can disrupt coastal aquatic biota. Students are given education (counseling) about the importance of conserving mangrove ecosystems from the threat of climate change mitigation. Students are very enthusiastic and active, it can be seen from the seriousness in participating in mangrove planting activities through discussions, questions and answers, and hands-on practice. Sustainability of a program like this is needed and efforts are made to become a routine program of gampong activities, NGO activities and also academic activities, because with sustainability it will be faster to see the results that have been expected together.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada data-data kelas gastropoda yang hidup menempel pada akar, batang mangrove (tree fauna) dan pada permukaan tanah (epifauna) dan gastropoda yang hidupnya menggali lubang dalam tanah (infauna). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah identifikasi kelas gastropoda pada hutan mangrove yang telah terancam ekosistemnya.pengambilan data gastropoda terdiri dari 10 plot dengan menggunakan transek kuadrat yang berukuran 1x1 meter, dan pengukuran salinitas.Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan 9 jenis dari 6 famili gastropoda yaitu Potamididae, Columbellidaes, Cerithiidae, Strobidae,Olividae, Neritidae. Salinitas merupakan faktor yang sangat berpengaruh bagi kehidupan Gastropoda dan keberadaan hutan mangrove, salinitas pada setiap Stasiun I 30,2%, Stasiun II 33,5% dan Stasiun III 33,7%. nila indeks keanekaragaman di setiap stasiun berbeda-beda, stasiun 1 dengan nilai 0,49 lebih sedikit (rendah) nilai indek keanekaragaman (Treefauna), untuk nilai 0,75 lebih tinggi yang dimiliki nilai indeks keanekaragaman (Epifauna). Untuk stasiun 2 dengan nilai 0,35 lebis sedikit nilai indeks keanekaragaman (Treefauna), sedangkan nilai 0,66 nilai indek keanekaragamannya sedang (epifauna). Stasiun 3 dengan nilai 0,33 lebih rendah untuk nilai indek keanekaragaman (treefauna), nilai 0,75 yang termasuk kategori keanekaragamannya tinggi (epifauna).Kondisi lingkungan saat ini disetiap stasiunnya relatif kurang baik bagi kehidupan gastropoda dan mangrove.

Abstract

Hama merupakan salah satu organisme perusak yang dianggap merugikan pada suatu ekosistem. Biota seperti kepiting, tritip, ulat, tiram, dan serangga yang sifatnya sebagai organisme perusak sangat banyak di temukan di lingkungan hutan  mangrove. Dalam pertumbuhan mangrove memiliki masa darurat, oleh karena itu memerlukan pemeliharaan dari penyakit sejak tahapan persemaian propagul, pembibitan dan ke tingkat anakan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis, jumlah dan tanda serangan hama yang ditemukan pada wilayah rehabilitasi dan rumah bibit. Metode yang digunakan yaitu purposive sampling dan random sampling. Hasil kegiatan penelitian identifikasi hama di kawasan rehabilitasi ditemukan 12 organisme perusak dan di rumah bibit ditemukan 8 jenis hama organisme perusak. Nilai intensitas serangan hama terbesar diperoleh pada substasiun 1 di kawasan rehabilitasi sebesar 13,80% dan nilai insidensi serangan berjumlah 27,58% tergolong ke dalam katergori sedang, dan kadar nilai intensitas serangan hama yang paling rendah di peroleh dari rumah bibit berjumlah 7,9% dengan frekuensi serangan rata-rata 13,27% tergolong ke dalam kategori ringan.

Abstract

Terumbu karang merupakan salah satu ekosistem laut yang rentan dengan faktor-faktor antropogenik. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini sangat penting dilakukan untuk menjaga kelestarian ekosistem terumbu karang. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menentukan persentase tutupan terumbu karang di perairan Pulo Kayee Aceh Selatan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada tanggal 8 November 2021 di perairan Pulau Kayee Gampong Ujong Pulo Rayeuk Kecamatan Bakongan Timur Kabupaten Aceh Selatan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Point Intercept Transect (PIT) dengan garis transek sepanjang 100 meter sejajar dengan garis pantai. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa substrat dasar pada stasiun 1 adalah Hard coral dengan persentase tutupan sebesar 58,75%, Dead coral with algae sebesar 28,75%, Rubble 7,50%, Rock 4,38%, Sand 0,63%. Pada Stasiun 2 tutupan substrat Hard coral sebesar 51,88%, Dead coral with algae sebesar 24,38%, Rubble 15,63%, Rock 4,38%, Sand 3,75%. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa ekosistem terumbu karang di perairan Pulo Kayee masih berada dalam kategori baik.Kata kunci :  Persentase tutupan, Pulau Kayee, Terumbu Karang,

Abstract

ABSTRAKEkowisata mangrove Gampong Baro mempunyai beberapa tempat yang dapat dikunjungi, bentuk dari aktivitas kunjungan ini secara langsung memberikan dampak terhadap  beberapa jenis biota pada ekologi mangrove adalah jenis Gastropoda. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada Bulan Oktober 2021-Januari 2022 di area mangrove Gampong Baro Kabupaten Aceh Jaya Provinsi Aceh, dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui nilai kepadatan, distribusi ukuran dan pola distribusi dari Terebralia palustris. Pengambilan data dilakukan di 3 stasiun pengamatan dengan menggunakan metode transek kuadrat. Pada setiap stasiun pengamatan di pasanng  plot utama ukuran 10 x 10 m untuk pengambilan data mangrove dan disetiap plot utama dibuat subplot ukuran 1 x 1 m  untuk pengambilan data gastropoda.  Hasil  dari penelitian menunjukan bahwa kepadatan Terebralia palustris bernilai antara 4-16 ind/m2, ukuran sebaran Terebralia palustris berkisar antara 3-12,3 cm. Indeks pola distribusi sebaran adalah Id<1 yang artinya pola sebarannya merata/seragam. Hubungan kerapatan mangrove dengan kelimpahan gastropoda Terebralia palustris antar stasiun dianalisis menggunakan Regresi Linear Sederhana diperoleh nilai r= 0,9663, yang berarti memiliki korelasi yang sangat kuat antara kepadatan gastropoda Terebralia palustris dengan kepadatan mangrove

Abstract

Sampah plastik merupakan salah satu ancaman serius bagi ekosistem laut. Sampah plastik yang tersebar dilautan mengakibatkan penyumbatan, komplikasi, hingga kematian organisme laut. Tujuan dilaksanakan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan gambaran kepada remaja desa tentang bahaya sampah plastik terhadap ekosistem laut, dan memberikan arahan serta pengetahuan kepada mereka tentang bahaya yang akan ditimbulkan. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 6 Februari Tahun 2022 di Pulau Dua, Desa Ujong Pulau Reyeuk, Kabupaten Aceh Selatan. Pelaksanaan sosialisasi dilaksanakan dalam beberapa tahap sebagai berikut: (1) Tahap Persiapan meliputi kebutuhan bahan logistik meliputi hand sanitizer, trash bag, spanduk sebagai informasi mengenai bahaya sampah plastik bagi ekosistem laut, (2) Tahap kegiatan meliputi penyisiran dan mengelilingi pulau dua untuk mengambil/memungut sampah; pemberikan atensi terhadap relawan yang ikut membantu dalam pengambilan sampah di Pulau Dua, (3) Tahap Pembuangan sampah ke dalam bak sampah yang disediakan oleh Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Aceh Selatan; serta edukasi melalui pemasangan spanduk mengenai menjaga lingkungan laut dengan tidak membuang sampah. Sampah plastik yang telah ditemukan di Pulau Dua Aceh Selatan menunjukkan bahwa minimnya kesadaran masyarakat mengenai kebersihan pesisir dan pantai. Oleh karena itu, pemeliharaan wilayah pesisir dan pantai di Pulau dua Aceh Selatan perlu ditingkatkan melalui himbauan dan saran edukasi agar masyarakat lebih peduli dalam menjaga lingkungan dan produktif dalam pengembangan ekosistem laut yang berkelanjutan
