Abstract

Background:Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious congenital abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord that develop in the first 28 days after conception. One of the main risk factors is folic acid deficiency in early pregnancy. Folic acid supplementation before conception has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of NTDs. Objective:To determine the effect of folic acid supplementation program during preconception period on reducing the risk of NTDs in pregnancy. Method:This study used a prospective cohort design in 240 women of childbearing age (WUS) who were planning a pregnancy in the working area of Community Health Center X. The intervention group (n=120) received 400 μg/day of folic acid supplementation at least 3 months before conception, while the control group (n=120) did not receive routine supplementation. NTDs incidence data were obtained from ultrasonography (USG) examinations and medical records up to 20 weeks of gestation. Data analysis used the relative risk (RR) test with 95% CI. Results:The incidence of NTDs in the intervention group was 0.83% (1/120), while in the control group it was 6.67% (8/120). The analysis showed a RR of 0.12 (95% CI: 0.02–0.95; p=0.044), meaning that preconception folic acid supplementation reduced the risk of NTDs by 88%. Conclusion:Preconception folic acid supplementation programs are effective in reducing the risk of NTDs. Routine folate supplementation programs are recommended for women planning pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: Labor pain is one of the main complaints experienced by mothers in labor, especially during the active phase of the first stage. Breathing techniques are a non-pharmacological method that can help reduce pain perception and increase comfort. Objective:To determine the effect of breathing techniques during labor on pain intensity in mothers in the first stage of labor in the active phase. Method:This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 40 mothers in the active phase of first-stage labor, divided into an intervention group (breathing techniques) and a control group (no intervention). Pain intensity was measured using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. Results:The average pain score before intervention in the treatment group was 7.35 and after intervention it was 5.10 (p=0.000). In the control group, the pain score only decreased from 7.25 to 7.10 (p=0.421). An independent t-test showed a significant difference between the two groups (p=0.000). Conclusion:Breathing techniques effectively reduce the intensity of pain in mothers in the first active phase of labor.

Abstract

Early Initiation of Breastfeeding is a process of letting the baby crawl on its own looking for its mother's nipple immediately in the first hour after birth along with skin contact between the baby and the mother. The aim of the study was to analyze the role of midwives in motivating mothers to initiate early breastfeeding at the Makassar City Mother and Child Hospital. The research used is qualitative research. The method of data collection used is data obtained through in-depth interviews using interview guidelines and observations of the object to be studied. From the results of research conducted for approximately one month, it was found that midwives' authority in motivating mothers to carry out Early Breastfeeding Initiation is still not optimal. The implementation of exclusive breastfeeding cannot be monitored, in terms of action and motivation it is quite good because at work midwives carry out their duties with full responsibility in accordance with the midwifery code of ethics. The conclusion from the results of this study is that the role of midwives in initiating early breastfeeding still needs to be improved, because the community, especially pregnant women, are still unfamiliar with the program, so effective socialization and education is needed so that babies born can be initiated on early breastfeeding.

Abstract

Immunization is the most effective and efficient public health effort in preventing diseases and reducing mortality, such as smallpox, polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, diphtheria, measles, rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), tetanus, pneumonia (inflammation of lungs) and meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain). Immunization aims to provide immunity to the child's body by administering a vaccine. Vaccine is a drug that is given to help prevent a disease. There are still many who have not received complete immunization due to various reasons such as lack of knowledge of mothers about immunization and low awareness of mothers bringing their babies to Posyandu or Puskesmas to get complete immunization, lack of explanation from health workers about the benefits of immunization including the factor of low maternal education. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between education, knowledge and attitudes of mothers at the Manisa Health Center. This research is analytic with a cross sectional approach, in this study were mothers who had babies, with a total sampling technique obtained 30 respondents. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire as a research instrument. The data that has been collected is then processed and analyzed using the chi-square test. The results of statistical analysis, obtained a relationship between education and completeness of basic immunization in infants (0.007 <0.05), there is a relationship between knowledge and completeness of basic immunization in infants (0.000 <0.05) and there is a relationship between attitude and completeness of basic immunization in infants (0.000 <0.05). Based on the results of this study it was concluded that there was a relationship between education, knowledge and attitudes of mothers with the completeness of basic immunization in infants. Through this research, it is hoped that health workers at the Manisa Health Center will be more active in providing counseling and information about immunization services and for researchers to add experience and apply the knowledge they have gained.
