Abstract

The visual quality of urban space represents the character of the city. Urban space should be able to deliver satisfying aesthetic and sensory experience. The visual quality of urban space formed by the visual signs representing an urban image and influencing the spatial behavior of every individual. A good urban space will encourage the emergence of good perception and meaning, prompting the community to produce a good reaction on its urban spaces. The involvement of public participation in the evaluation and assessment of the visual aesthetics of the urban image is needed to establish a good urban space. This paper investigates the rapid growth of restaurant in the commercial area corridor adjacent to the education campus area in Malang City. Both the location factor and consumers of college students has stimulated the growth of the variety building facade appearances and led to the dominance of contemporary architectural styles. In furtherance of bringing the visual quality of a good urban image, the study on aesthetic aspects is conducted to control the quality visual appearance of the building facade. This study combines the method of public preferences through the Semantic Differential Scales with the computational aesthetic methods through the applications of Interfaces Aesthetic Measurement (IAM) with 13 variables of aesthetic. The results of this study stated that the aesthetic value assessment of building facade restaurants in study area showed a positive value. Furthermore, the comparison of assessment values between the methods of public preferences with the computational aesthetics indicates similarities.

Abstract

Lawang city has many interesting sights, one of which is the source Polaman Baths, located in Sumber Polaman. In the Village of Polaman there are some cultural activities that make up the cultural space. Local communities do village ritual ceremonies to honor ancestors founders of the village as well as a petition to God for the prosperity of rural communities Polaman. The cultural activities are known as cultural ritual barikan. Time and Barikan ritual space in the traditional settlement pattern forming Polaman rural communities. The research method in this study is descriptive-qualitative method with an etnographic approach. This study aims to identify patterns formed by the settlement of the cultural activities that make up the cultural space. By knowing the settlement pattern is formed it will be determined the shape of preservation suitable for spaces used settlements and cultural preservation barikan itself.Keywords: cultural space, barikan traditional ceremonies, village Source Polaman

Abstract

The Madurese community is known as an individual, independent and subsistent corn farming community, identified as having three main territories: residential territory, open space territory and agricultural landscape territory. The distance between clusters of distant residential causes is referred to as individual society as well as independent. The dependence of life on crops causes the distance of dwelling with the agricultural landscape so close that it is called subsistence society. Land-based economic morality, due to the persistence of maintaining spatial territory. So the fundamental question of research is how the third spatial pattern of territory in the village of Laok Madura Madura? The strategy used is ethnography, with qualitative research design. The main data collection methods were in-depth interviews, no open questions, with typical case sampling techniques in four occupancy based on five criteria: civitas, activity, shelter pattern, agricultural landscape pattern and artifacts existence of crop storage object. Internal validation in the form of observation, measurement and architectural documentation, caused by the characteristic of ethnic sub-ethnic of Madura, so that the head of village is not a source of internal validation, but the participant as the owner of the dwelling. The analysis is done by comparing with anthropological-architectural concept, human space concept, also with related theme study. The results obtained at least found the embodiment of the concept of spatial patterns called habitat. The concept of a spatial pattern called habitat consists of: place, environment and landscape. The arrangement of the three forms a hierarchical bubble that places in the environment, while place and environment are in the landscape. Referring to the concept of architectural-anthropological, the hierarchy of these three elements is referred to as: habitat.

Abstract

Assessment of aesthetical quality of architectural elements of Colonial buildings in Jalan Basuki Rahmat, Malang The characters of a building are formed by several elements, one of them is an architectural element. The architectural element can be assessed using aesthetic judgment scales. Aesthetic value is closely related to public perception. The Colonial buildings in Jalan Basuki Rahmat have distinctive character that worth to be preserved. Assessment of building aesthetic is the initial step in the effort to preserve colonial buildings. This study aims to assess the aesthetic quality of the architectural elements of Colonial buildings in Jalan Basuki Rahmat. Questionnaires are used to collect data, and Aesthetic measurement is carried out using the semantic differential scale. The community members are requested to judge the aesthetic quality of the buildings based on their own perceptions by looking at photos. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples test, and linear regression. The research results showed that the architectural element that had the most significant impact on the aesthetic quality of Colonial buildings were the façade. The Colonial building with the highest aesthetic value is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Malang.

Abstract

The Lawas Maspati village in the Surabaya urban area has relics such as historical areas, ancient buildings with colonial architectural styles, and community cultural traditions such as the mutual cooperation attribute, cangkrukan (gathering), and local wisdom (culinary, craft SME). The efforts towards maintaining the heritage buildings and adapting to cultural dynamics as well as the local wisdom make Lawas Maspati Village a life diorama which allows a person to have a sense of place towards the village. This study was conducted to explore the sense of place in the Lawas Maspati Village community through physical, social, and cultural factors through the use of a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field documentation from respondents selected through a purposive sampling method using individuals that have lived for more than 20 years and aged over 40 years old. The results showed the sense of place in Lawas Maspati Village community was formed by physical, social, and cultural factors including the ancient colonial-style buildings, historical areas, historical memories in the struggle period through cultural heritage areas, mutual cooperation, mutual respect, cangkrukan tradition, friendly characteristics of Arek Suroboyo such as tolerance, openness, busyness but friendliness without hurt feelings, traditional culinary, and religious traditions.

Abstract

The assessment of cultural significance is important to the processes involved in the determination of building preservation policies. The cultural significance is mostly invisible or intangible in a cultural heritage building and contained in the form of value or meaning which are sometimes misinterpreted and this means it is possible to judge a building as worthy or unworthy to be preserved for the interests of the past, present, and future through the evaluation its importance. Moreover, some important elements are usually contained in a cultural heritage building which can be excavated through their cultural significance. This research was, therefore, conducted to determine the cultural significance of residential buildings in the Jatiroto Sugar Factory area complex at Lumajang Regency, East Java to be used in formulating policies required to preserve the structures as a cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations. This involved the use of the descriptive method to describe the situation in the field while the weighted evaluative method was applied to evaluate the cultural significance value of the building and its elements. The results were used as the criteria to determine the cultural significance of the official house of the Jatiroto Sugar Factory which can be applied as the reference to formulate the cultural significance criteria for similar cultural heritage buildings in other locations.

Abstract

The house is a place of living things live. A basic requirement for this stay originated from human shaping social life, to live together and form a pattern settlement. The formation of the villages in the village SumberPolaman, Lawang usually starts from a group of people who form a small village then more and more perfect. This area is shaped and influenced by natural factors as well as the physical expression of the region and culture that has been passed down from generation to generation. The house located in the village of Lawang SumberPolaman generally in the form of a traditional rural home with a simple roof forms that are divided by type and function of each. The wall is in the form of a plank of wood, bamboo and brick wall. While generally still use plaster floor, but there are some homes that already use a ceramic material. The main purpose of writing to determine the typology of residential buildings form the population and settlement patterns that exist in the village SumberPolaman, Lawang. The method used is descriptive method qualitative approach to typology that is the way to describe and classify the various types of data related to residential buildings in the village SumberPolaman, Lawang.

Abstract

Historic buildings that still survive for a long time can affect the image of an area. To study this, this research identified people's perceptions of historical buildings in the Merdeka Square area of Malang. This study used multiple rating scales measuring instruments and photos of eight historic buildings around the Merdeka Square, Malang City as stimuli to investigate the similarities and differences in perceptions between three groups of respondents: the general public, professionals in the field of Architecture (lecturers and students majoring in Architecture, and members of the Indonesian Architectural Association), and the Government (Bappeda, Culture and Tourism Department, and Malang City DPUPR). The results of this study indicated that the order of the most influential cultural significance factors in shaping the image of the Merdeka Square area of Malang is the intangible value and the visual quality of the facade of the old building. It was also found that there were differences in assessment between groups of respondents in assessing the visual quality of the building facade in its effect on the image of the area.

Abstract

Tampilan visual dan karakter bangunan dibentuk oleh elemen arsitekturnya. Bangunan bergaya Art Deco memiliki karakter tersendiri. Kota Malang berkembang pesat di era pemerintah Hindia Belanda pada tahun 1920 sampai 1938. Dalam rentang waktu tersebut gaya Art Deco sedang berkembang di Eropa. Tren ini berdampak terhadap bangunan di Kota Malang sehingga sebagian bangunan kolonial bergaya Art Deco. Bangunan-bangunan tersebut berada di kawasan yang memiliki nilai komersial yang tinggi. Hal ini dapat menyebabkan perubahan pada bangunan karena tuntutan komersial, baik keseluruhan bangunan maupun elemen arsitekturnya. Sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai signifikansi elemen arsitektur bangunan kolonial bergaya Art Deco di Kota Malang, sebagai upaya untuk mempertahankan karakter bangunan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif, dimana data didapatkan menggunakan kuesioner. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan program SPSS. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bentuk bangunan, atap, kanopi, ornamen, material, dan warna berpengaruh signifikan terhadap karakter bangunan kolonial bergaya Art Deco di Kota Malang.

Abstract

Malang is well-known for colonial buildings. Visual quality of  building in the Kayutangan corridor makes it an icon of Malang City. Assessment of visual quality is affected by daytime and nighttime conditions. Day and night lighting are factors that influenced the visual quality assessment of buildings. This study meant to assess the visual quality of buildings in the kayutangan corridor which has a history and aspects that influence by society during the day and night. This study used a descriptive quantitative method explaining public perception about the visual quality of buildings in Kayutangan street corridors during the day and night. Semantic Differential Scale was the instrument to describe the respondents’ perceptions. From the result showed that visual quality of four of 10 buildings have a low scores and there are six variables that have the most influence on daylight and eight variables at night on buildings in the Kayutangan corridor.
