Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the concept of Michel Foucault’s panopticon in the modern digital context, as depicted in the docudrama The Social Dilemma. The research focuses on understanding the surveillance mechanisms of social media and their psychological impacts on user behavior. Methodology: This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis as the primary method. The object of study is the docudrama The Social Dilemma on Netflix. Data collection involves observation, documentation studies, and literature reviews from Scopus.com and other websites to identify how digital surveillance is portrayed and its effects on users. Main Findings: The study finds that social media platforms use advanced surveillance algorithms to monitor, influence, and control user behavior. These mechanisms form a digital panopticon where users feel constantly watched, leading to behavioral adjustments. The psychological impacts include anxiety, depression, and addiction, particularly among teenagers, driven by the normalization of constant digital surveillance. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study uniquely applies Foucault’s panopticon theory to analyze the influence of digital surveillance depicted in The Social Dilemma. The novelty of this research lies in its application of Foucault’s panopticon theory to digital platforms, providing new insights into the psychological and behavioral consequences of algorithmic surveillance. However, the study is limited by focusing on a single docudrama, which may not comprehensively represent the full spectrum of digital surveillance practices. Future research should expand on this analysis by examining broader datasets or additional media to validate these findings.

Abstract

Digital Economy Literacy is a necessity for business people, but there is still a lack of information about technology, making it difficult for MSMEs to switch to digital business. Four factors make it difficult for MSMEs to go digital. MSMEs in the culinary field in these locations still do not master packaging, branding, marketing techniques, and internet technology, which is a prerequisite for online marketing. This study aims to see how MSMEs have digital economy literacy in that location. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach where researchers directly help the community through empowerment or service. Researchers carried out data collection techniques through observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results of this study are that MSME actors in the culinary field can carry out digital branding and online marketing techniques as a result of empowerment or community service by researchers, including 1) understanding digital tools that are considered the most accessible by MSME actors; 2) the assistance needed by MSMEs in digital appeals; and 3) the digital literacy level of MSMEs seen from the digital literacy competency model.

Abstract

This study examines how cultural communication sustains food self-reliance among the Samin community in Blora Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from 12 purposively selected participants — comprising traditional elders (sesepuh) and active community members — until thematic saturation was reached, through in-depth interviews, participant observation of agricultural practices and ritual ceremonies, and documentation of oral traditions. Thematic analysis reveals that cultural communication operates through three interconnected mechanisms: the intergenerational transmission of ecological agricultural knowledge (land management, seed selection, and planting cycles), cooperative social norms (gotong royong and deliberation) that govern collective land management and harvest distribution, and ritual practices that reinforce the community's moral framework regarding human–nature relations. Together, these mechanisms constitute a locally embedded system of food governance that reduces external dependency and sustains food self-reliance. Rather than portraying the community as uniformly resistant to modernization, this study finds that the Samin community exercises selective engagement with external interventions, prioritizing practices that align with their socio-cultural values. The central analytical contribution of this study is the conceptualization of cultural communication as a form of indigenous food governance one that warrants formal recognition in the design of culturally sensitive and sustainable food self-reliance policies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the political branding strategy of Sherly Tjoanda through her TikTok account @sherlytjoanda during the first 100 days of her term as Governor of North Maluku for the 2025–2030 period. The study applies the concept of personal political branding with seven key indicators: competence & energy, sincerity & agreeableness, excitement, openness, sophistication, ruggedness, and conscientiousness. The research method used is qualitative content analysis with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained from 194 TikTok videos, which were then categorized according to the relevant indicators. The findings reveal that the most dominant indicators are sincerity & agreeableness (161 times), conscientiousness (149 times), and competence & energy (123 times). Other indicators—sophistication (122 times), openness (63 times), excitement (48 times), and ruggedness (45 times)—serve as supporting elements. These results indicate that Sherly Tjoanda constructs a political image of integrity, relatability, and performance orientation by utilizing TikTok as a strategic medium, representing women’s political leadership in the digital era.

Abstract

This study analyzes Zulkifli Hasan’s crisis communication strategies in response to public attribution of responsibility for the 2025 Sumatra flood disasters, which were linked to his past policies. Utilizing the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) framework, this research identifies that although the crisis is categorized as a preventable crisis, which theoretically necessitates a full apology, the subject instead implemented a combination of self-defense strategies. The research findings reveal three primary tactics: (1) Denial through the “attack the accuser" tactic to discredit the Harrison Ford interview video as a biased and modified film product; (2) Diminish using a "democratic surplus" narrative to shift ministerial responsibility to the structural failures of regional autonomy during the Reformation era; and (3) Bolstering via "ingratiation" by associating himself with the legitimacy of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration and employing theological emphasis to assert personal integrity. The novelty of this research lies in its analytical focus on managing reputational crises triggered by the re-contextualization of past digital footprints within a long-form podcast narrative format, a dimension that addresses a gap in crisis communication studies previously dominated by short-form social media platforms. This study suggests that future research utilize big data-based sentiment analysis methods to quantitatively measure the effectiveness of such rhetoric in shifting public perception.

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to analyze the counter-hegemony discourse regarding the DPR RI allowance increase issue on the TikTok account @salsaerwina. The study is grounded in Teun A. van Dijk’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis, uses the purposive sampling technique, and draws on a data corpus of 10 videos published between August 26 to September 2, 2025. It categorized videos that critique power, narratives, and strength ideological storytelling. The findings identified some pillars of counter-hegemony: (1) the personalization of elite moral crises; (2) the framing of exploitation and social inequality; (3) the subversion of institutional legitimacy through satirical humor; and (4) legalistic-integrity accountability claims. Social cognition and context analysis demonstrate that multimodal texts and TikTok’s algorithmic penetration potentially facilitate the strengthening of digital citizens’ critical awareness. Furthermore, the massive interactions in the comment section show an early indication of collective mobilization in the digital realm to monitor public policy beyond mainstream media constraints. This study expands communication literature regarding alternative digital public spheres.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of government–community communication in 3T regions, focusing on North Lombok Regency, through the lens of Face Negotiation Theory. It aims to explain how communication shifts from domination toward negotiation within structurally constrained and culturally embedded contexts. Drawing on an interpretive qualitative approach, the study employs in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis to capture interactional dynamics in public communication forums. The findings reveal that communication remains largely dominated by top-down practices that generate systemic face threat and limit meaningful participation. However, situational facework—manifested through local mediators, culturally resonant language, and informal interaction spaces—emerges as an adaptive mechanism that reduces relational tension and enables limited dialogue. Despite these developments, negotiation remains predominantly procedural rather than substantive, as public input rarely influences decision-making outcomes. Consequently, communication transformation occurs in a gradual, partial, and contested manner. The study contributes by extending Face Negotiation Theory, developed by Stella Ting-Toomey, into the institutional domain through a Transformative Face Negotiation Framework, which integrates relational, cultural, and structural dimensions of communication. This framework highlights communication as a dynamic process shaped by the interplay between domination, adaptation, and constrained negotiation, offering a nuanced understanding of governance communication in marginalized contexts.

Abstract

Globalization threatens the sustainability of Slametan tradition among youth. This study aims to uncover the communicative mechanisms of inheriting ritual food values in Gunungsari Village, Wonogiri Regency. This study gathered data from 15 cross-generational informants using a qualitative ethnography of communication framework and symbolic interactionism. Findings reveal that cultural inheritance occurs via domestic interaction, rewang, and formal rituals. Crucially, a symbolic reconciliation exists where digital media validates traditions for skeptical youth. The study concludes that Slametan tradition survives through a triangulated communication system: family, community, and digital validation, ensuring Javanese cultural resilience by harmonizing modern logic with traditional norms.
