Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the different types of deixis using Yule's theory (1996), as well as to determine the function of each deixis found in the main character in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie script. The researcher chose this film as the subject of study because it became one of the most popular film in the Harry Potter series and it contains many deictic words. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in this study. Reading and note-taking techniques were used to collect the data. The research data is taken from the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie script (2003). The results of this study show that there are three types of deixis used by Yule's theory (1996), such as person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal, which are used in the “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie script”. The function of person-deixis is to point to things and people as possessions, objects, or subjects. The function of spatial deixis is to point out the locations of people, places, and things in an utterance. The function of temporal deixis is to point out the time in an utterance. Furthermore, the researcher found that there are 836 deixis, which consist of 709 deixis of person deixis, 92 deixis of person deixis, and 35 temporal deixis.

Abstract

The research purposes were to determine the students’ ability along with the barriers in writing report texts of the eleventh graders at MA NWDI Perian. This research adopted a mix method of sequential explanatory analysis (quantitative descriptive-qualitative).  The Instruments were written tests and interviews. Students were first asked to write report texts to determine their ability and then they were asked a series of questions related to the data results. Based on the results, the mean score was 52.19 and the passing grade for English was 70. This indicates that the participants’ ability in writing report texts is poor or below standard. There are five components that are assessed, and participants' ability levels in these five components are still relatively low. The percentages of each assessment were as follows: content 21%, organization 21%, vocabulary 18%, language 18%, and mechanic 22%. According to the results of qualitative data analysis, the barriers in writing report texts were content, organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanics. In addition to those students barriers, there are other factors that should be considered in writing tasks, such as motivation, lexicogrammar features, paragraph elements, or three main factors that influence students' writing skill, namely psychological, sociocultural and linguistic.  Furthermore, this study was conducted while the pandemic was still widespread and the interaction of teachers and students during the teaching and learning process were only conducted via virtual setting. This, of course, makes teachers less effective in delivering lessons, particularly in writing, which requires extensive practice, proofreading, discussion, and revision activities. In addition, factors such as space barriers and, in some cases, network restrictions and the use of unappropriate teaching methods or strategies, all have an impact on students' writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the specific English-speaking needs of local guides in Tete Batu by exploring the relevant learning topics for their guiding roles and examining the challenges they face in delivering effective services to tourists. This research used a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. In the first phase, questionnaires were distributed to 27 active local guides to identify the most frequently used English topics in their guiding activities. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS 26.00 to determine topic priorities. In the second phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five selected guides to gain deeper insights into the challenges they face and to confirm the questionnaire results. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that a total of 22 English learning topics are used by local guides in Tete Batu. Among these, 11 topics are frequently used in daily guiding practices, while the other 11 are applied only in specific or situational contexts. In addition, the guides reported several challenges in their work, such as sudden weather changes, limited destination knowledge among new guides, tourists’ entrance tickets, the absence of a Tourist Information Center (TIC), and the lack of learning resources. The findings suggest that English training should focus on practical, topic-based content aligned with real guiding tasks.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the use of formative and summative assessments in enhancing the speaking skills of sixth-semester EFL students at Hamzanwadi University. Although numerous studies have explored assessment practices in language learning, limited attention has been given to how both formative and summative assessments specifically influence EFL learners’ speaking performance in the Indonesian higher education context. To address this gap, the study employed a qualitative descriptive design, collecting data through questionnaires and interviews to explore students’ perceptions, experiences, and reflections regarding both assessment types. Findings reveal that formative assessment has a greater positive impact on speaking performance, offering regular feedback, progressive practice, and improved confidence while reducing anxiety. Summative assessment, while motivating, often induces stress, limits feedback, and may not fully reflect students’ actual abilities. The study concludes that formative assessment is more effective in supporting speaking development and recommends a balanced approach that emphasizes formative processes while using summative evaluation as a complementary measure.
