Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in speaking classes and to examine its effectiveness in improving the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at MTs NWDI Pangsor Gunung. A pre-experimental design and a quantitative approach have been used in the present research. The sample consisted of 18 seventh-grade students who participated in PBL lessons. Pre- and post-test speaking assessments were used to gather information on speaking abilities. The average score on the preliminary test was 55.38, and the average score on the post-test was 66.88. After PBL was implemented, students' speaking abilities significantly improved, as indicated by the paired sample t-test's significance score (p-value) of 0.000 < 0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of Problem-Based Learning has a positive and significant effect on improving the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at MTs NWDI PangsorGunung. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers use PBL as an effective speaking learning method at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This research aims to enhance students' speaking skills through project-based learning, increasing their engagement and active participation. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations involving ten eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Sembalun academic year 2024. Thematic analysis was employed to identify critical patterns and themes within the collected data. The findings indicate that students found the project-based method a more enjoyable and meaningful way to practice speaking. They reported increased confidence and engagement in speaking activities due to the opportunities to work in groups and undertake relevant projects. However, some students also faced challenges like group collaboration and time management. This study provides in-depth insights into how project-based learning methods can impact students' speaking skills and offers recommendations for improving the implementation of this approach in the classroom.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing the speaking skills of students at SMAN 1 Sembalun. Using a pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments, the research involved 16 eleventh-grade students. The results indicated a significant improvement in speaking abilities, with the average pre-test score of 48.75 increasing to an average post-test score of 71.56 after the PBL intervention. This shift reflected enhanced pronunciation, fluency, and grammar usage, demonstrating that students became more confident communicators. While PBL proved beneficial, challenges such as time constraints and the need for effective facilitation were identified. This research contributed to the growing body of evidence supporting PBL as an effective pedagogical approach, highlighting its potential to foster independent learning and improve communication skills.
