Abstract

Despite the absence of a statistically significant association between Body Roundness Index (BRI) and Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) with blood glucose levels, this study underscores the practical value of both anthropometric indices as early screening tools for diabetes risk among office workers. The high proportion of participants classified as at risk—64.6% by BRI and 80% by WHtR—indicates a notable prevalence of central obesity, which is a well-established precursor to insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. In workplace health promotion programs, particularly within sedentary environments such as offices, simple, low-cost, and non-invasive tools like BRI and WHtR can facilitate routine screening for metabolic risks. These tools allow health practitioners and occupational health units to identify individuals with increased cardiometabolic risk and recommend timely lifestyle interventions, such as structured physical activity, dietary modifications, and regular glucose monitoring. Moreover, WHtR, which showed a higher sensitivity in this population, may serve as a more practical parameter for large-scale screenings. Given their ease of use and predictive potential, incorporating BRI and WHtR into employee health assessments may significantly enhance early detection and prevention efforts for diabetes mellitus. Future studies could explore their longitudinal predictive accuracy and integration into digital health platforms for continuous monitoring in workplace settings.

Abstract

Background: Overweight and obesity are rising among Indonesian adolescents and are known risk factors for hypertension. This study aimed to examine the relationship between overnutrition status and blood pressure among adolescents.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to September 2024, among overweight and obese adolescents aged 12–16 years in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.  Nutritional status was determined by body mass index (BMI) Z-scores based on CDC growth charts, adjusted for sex and age. Blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer and classified according to the 2017 AAP guidelines. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests. Results: A total of 98 adolescents participated (67.3% male; mean age 13 years). Overweight (49%) and obesity (51%) were almost equally distributed, with the highest BMI recorded at 46.7 kg/m². More than half (58.2%) had elevated blood pressure, with one case reaching grade 2 hypertension (143/84 mmHg). Overnutrition status was significantly associated with elevated blood pressure (p=0.044). Stratified analysis showed a strong association among males (p=0.005), where 42.4% of obese males exhibited elevated blood pressure, but no significant association was observed among females (p=0.58).Conclusion: Overnutrition is significantly associated with elevated blood pressure among adolescents, particularly in males. Early interventions promoting balanced nutrition, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle habits are critical to reducing the long-term cardiovascular risk in this age group.

Abstract

Highlights: 1. This is the first cross-sectional study in Indonesia that was conducted specifically to find a correlation between physical activity levels and food intake. 2. As lower physical activity was found to be associated with higher food intake, this study suggests that physical activity might be taken into consideration to manipulate one's food consumption Abstract One of the most crucial things a person can do to enhance the well-being of their body is to engage in regular physical activity. However, currently, there are still many people who have low physical activity levels. It is stated that habitual physical activity can affect the sensitivity of food intake regulation. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the total food intake and physical activity of preclinical students. This study was conducted using the cross-sectional method among preclinical students (n=238) in the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019 at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia. Subjects with appetite-manipulating supplements, a diet program, a history of metabolic disease, a history of eating disorders, stress, or trauma were excluded from this study. The physical activity level was evaluated using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ), while the total food intake was evaluated using the three-day food record method. The statistical test applied in this study was the Spearman test, with a significance of p<0.05. There were 22.3% of respondents with a low physical activity level, and there were 9.7% of respondents with a total food intake higher than recommended. The statistical analysis showed a significant negative correlation between physical activity levels and total food intake (p=0.008). In conclusion, there is an association between students' physical activity levels and their total food intake.

Abstract

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a global health issue, particularly in Africa and Asia. Cognitive impairment may early develop in individuals living with HIV and can therefore potentially impact nutritional status. This study aimed to assess the correlation between cognitive function and nutritional status in pre-elderly individuals with HIV.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2023 to October 2024 among individuals living with HIV aged 45–59 years in Jakarta, Indonesia. Cognitive function was measured using the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina) and nutritional status was evaluated using body mass index (BMI). Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP).Results: Of the 157 respondents, most were male (75.2%) with a mean age of 49±4.17 years. The majority were unmarried (44.6%), employed (70.1%), had incomes below the Jakarta minimum wage (74.5%), and had completed senior high school education (56.0%). Mild cognitive impairment was found in 70.7% of participants, whereas normal nutritional status was the most common (45.9%). However, no significant relationship was found between cognitive function and nutritional status (p=0.161).  Conclusion: Mild cognitive impairment is prevalent among pre-elderly individuals with HIV, most of whom have normal nutritional status. Although no significant relationship is observed between cognitive function and nutritional status, these findings highlight the importance of incorporating early cognitive screening into routine HIV care to support healthy aging and timely identification and management of cognitive decline.

Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic gastrointestinal  disorder with increasing global prevalence. Aloe vera contains bioactive compounds with potential anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of Aloe vera extract in a Sprague-Dawley rat model of GERD.Methods: This experimental study included 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats randomly divided into eight groups: normal (N), negative control (NC), two positive controls receiving pantoprazole for 7 or 14 days (PCI and PCII), and four treatment groups receiving Aloe vera extract at doses of 250 or 500 mg/kg body weight for 7 or 14 days (DI–DIV). After treatment, the rats were euthanized and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) tissues were collected for histopathological analysis. Basal cell thickness and lymphocyte infiltration were assessed. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc testing. Results: Administration of Aloe vera extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight significantly reduced basal cell thickness compared with the untreated GERD group (p<0.05). However, no significant reduction in lymphocyte infiltration  was observed (p>0.05).Conclusions: Aloe vera extract exhibits anti-inflammatory effects in GERD-induced rats by reducing basal cell thickness at the GEJ. These findings suggest its potential as a complementary therapeutic approach for GERD, although further studies are needed to evaluate long-term efficacy and safety.

Abstract

The state of prehypertension that is often neglected in young adults is not inferior to hypertension in contributing to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. Several simple anthropometric indices may be used as prehypertension prognostic tools, including Body Mass Index (BMI), Body Shape Index (ABSI), Waist Circumference (WC), Weight to Height Ratio (WHtr), and Body Roundness Index (BRI). This study aimed to compare several anthropometric examinations for detecting prehypertension in male medical students. The cross-sectional study design was conducted on 107 male medical students. Direct measurements of the respondents were carried out with blood pressure data collection and anthropometric examination. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AROC) analysis with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess all anthropometric measures’ discriminatory power to assess the risk of prehypertension in the participants. Participants with prehypertension were relatively older and had less active physical activity than normotensive (p<0.05). The mean BMI, BRI, WC, and WHtR were significantly higher in the prehypertensive group than in the normotensive group. However, ABSI was not showing any relationship with blood pressure. The process with 95% CI of blood pressure classification related to anthropometric measures indicates that BMI showed the highest AROC values for the prehypertensive state (AROC: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.63–0.82), and WC had the lowest AROCs (AROC: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.52–0.63). BMI, BRI, WC, and WHtr may be applied as prognostic assessments for prehypertension states in young adult males.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Depression is a mental disorder with a high prevalence among young adults in Indonesia. Environmental factors such as sunlight and PM2.5 potentially influencing risk of depression. This study aimed to determine the levels of sunlight and PM2.5 exposure and their association with depression among young adults in urban Jakarta. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design conducted in Penjaringan, North Jakarta during December 2023 to November 2024. Sample was 90 young adults recruited using consecutive sampling methods. Data were collected using structured questionnaire to assess sun exposure and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depression. The PM2.5 air-quality monitoring data was obtained from the World Air Quality Index (AQICN) platform. Data were analyzed descriptively and analytically using frequency distributions and the Chi-square test. Results: The mean age of respondent were 21.92 years old, 62.2% were male and 75.6% were working. Overall, 45.6% had high PM2.5 exposure, while 53.3% had low sun exposure and 45.6% had depression. PM2.5 exposure was significantly associated with depression (OR=2.66; 95%CI: 1.13–6.25), whereas sun exposure was not (OR=1.47; 95%CI: 0.64–3.39). Conclusion: The study identified substantial PM2.5 exposure and depressive symptoms among young adults, with higher PM2.5 exposure significantly associated with depression. Public health interventions should prioritize reducing air pollution and promoting healthier urban environments alongside mental health programs
