Abstract

The small portion of teaching literature, especially poetry writing, which is available in the curriculum (K-13) makes students less able to practice writing poetry. The tenth graders at the National Immersion Senior High School (NISHS) Ponorogo are less able to explore the potential of literature in themselves. This research aims at helping the students by using hypnotic writing approach to improve the students' writing poetry. It employs an experimental research design by comparing the scores of the writing skills after implementing hypnotic writing. The result of the t.test is 6.09, compared with the value of the t.table with the degree of freedom (d.b = N - 1 = 20 - 1 = 19) = 2.09 and the significance level used is 5%. Therefore, it is clear that the value of t.test is higher than t.table (6.09 2.09). The finding shows that the post-test scores improve significantly. It means that the improvement of the ability to write English poetry through hypnotic writing in tenth-grade students at National Immersion Senior High School (NISHS) Ponorogo is effective, and the hypothesis is acceptable. The result of this study is expected to be an alternative in the techniques of writing poetry, especially at senior high school.

There were sixteen data in the form of utterances which contained kinds of the speech technique used by psychopaths. The researchers calculated the data by observing, transcribing, describing, and analyzing the speech of psychopaths in the Dark Matter channel. Further, the data were classified by using Timor and Weiss (2008) patterns of psychopathic knowledge. The results showed that four psychopathic individuals demonstrated the kinds of speech technique, which has a distinct pattern using semantic and morphological techniques. Based on semantic technique, all categories found in the data are vocabulary, repetition, figurative language, positive and negative connotations, and anaphora. Abstract

The issue on language and communication disorder of individuals with Down Syndrome becomes the focus of this study. It explores the disorder as a language phenomenon represented in movie. Where Hope Grows movie describes the character with Down Syndrome struggling in communicating with people in his workspace and independent livelihood. The result of this study shows that the utterances have dissimilarities with common people particularly in phonological terms such consonant clusters produced as a singleton, omitted word final consonant, target fricatives and affricates are produced as stops, and aspirated voiceless stops in initial position are de-aspirated. Moreover, there are also issues within the syntactical terms such simple infinitive clauses with equivalent subjects, infinitive clauses with different subjects, and quotes as full clauses. Further studies should cover more elaborative communication strategies of speakers with Down Syndrome in more impromptu and spontaneous speech contexts.

Abstract

Machine translation is one tool of Google that presents various languages to translate. As a translator machine, the results of Google Translate are not always perfectly correct. The result of translation can be called pre-translation, which is still needed to be revised. Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Arok Dedes story is one of the Javanese stories that contain elements of culture. Translating texts which contain elements of a culture is not easy because one region to another have different cultures, so that it is difficult to look for parallel words that contain cultural, religious, social, customs, social organization, procedure, sign language, and ecology elements, and Google cannot translate the term of cultural words easily. This study is aimed at two main purposes: (1) finding out the types of lexical errors made by machine translation in translating cultural text and (2) knowing the most dominant type of lexical errors made by machine translation in translating cultural text. This study was carried out in a population of 553 pages of Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Arok Dedes. A simple random sampling technique was done to select samples. The total samples taken in this study were 30% of the population. The study results are that there are only 9 types of the total 21 types of lexical errors, namely calque, misselection, consonant-based type, false friend, vowel-based type, inappropriate co-hyponym statistically weighted preferences, semantically determined word selection, and preposition partners. The most dominant error of lexical errors is calque.

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage and makes the patient lose or impair language skills. One of the diseases which often cause people to experience aphasia is stroke. In this study, the researchers observed the characteristics of language impairment of Sarah Scott. She’s a young woman suffering from Broca's aphasia after stroke. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method on the utterances she produced in SymphUK YouTube channel as the data source. In collecting the data, the researchers watched and transcribed the utterances containing the language disorder. The analysis used the theory of Hallowel (2017) on the characteristics of Broca's aphasia and Ardila (2014) about the linguistics defects in aphasia. The finding shows that the most dominant characteristic was dysnomia, literal (phonemic) paraphasia, and agrammatism among twenty-six utterances. Then, the other characteristics that also appeared were disfluency, repetition, and telegraphic speech. Furthermore, the levels of language-impaired in Sarah Scott were morphemic, morphosyntactic, and phonetic. Thus, the following study should cover more subjects with different age, gender, and language to see whether more variation of characteristics of Broca's aphasia appears in different contexts.

Abstract

Due to the recent increase in studies on emotions in Applied Linguistics and, especially now, in pandemic times, it opens more discussion to relate teachers' emotions with several other aspects including resilience. Therefore, this research aims to analyze language teachers’ experience in teaching deaf students in Recife, Brazil, and Malang, Indonesia. The methodology applied was qualitative. This study involved teachers in Recife, Brazil, and Malang, Indonesia. The teachers selected to be interviewed in this study were those who had experience teaching deaf students for at least five years and those who, during the pandemic times taught online. Two teachers were taken from each city. Findings point out, among other things, that decreasing the number of students per class and having parents involved in the process may help improve students' learning and teachers' experience and resilience. Based on the data on the implementation of language learning and the teachers' perception of the benefit, the constraints, and strategies in online language learning, resilience is triggered by the professional, personal, institutional, and community challenges.

Abstract

Many studies have discussed the Think-Pair-Share strategy to increase students' learning motivation in various scientific fields, especially in learning English. However, it still requires more exploration concerning TPS implementation for seventh-grader students to improve their proficiency when engaged in narrative reading. This research departs from the student's opinion about the struggle to read and understand the narrative text, and the class was so boring. Therefore, it is assumed that the use of TPS can increase the student’s motivation in reading narrative text. The design chosen is classroom action research (CAR) implemented at MTs. Darul Hikmah Jabon. The participants were 26 students. This research is done with one pre-cycle for need analysis and two cycles to see the increase of the student's score. In the pre-cycle, only three students reached the success criteria. In the first cycle, the scores did not significantly increase; only eleven students succeeded. In the second cycle, twenty-three students showed improvement. It resumed that the TPS technique is very effective for increasing student motivation on reading narrative text. Abstract

In the utterances of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers, there are deixis inaccuracy or errors that can make the interlocutor unable to understand the meaning of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. Existing research on deixis is still limited to ordinary people's speech, so in-depth research is needed on deixis in the utterance of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers, especially on deixis errors. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types and analyze the meaning of deixis errors expressed by Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. The deixis errors were identified from the utterances produced by four Wernicke's aphasia sufferers on YouTube channels. Data retrieval is in the form of choosing a few words that are only included in the expression of the use of deictic errors identified according to Levinson (1983). After that, the utterances containing deixis errors were interpreted from the context and the typology of the inaccuracy. The finding shows three out of five types of deixis errors made by Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. The most dominant type of deixis errors found is personal deixis. The results of this study can be helpful for further research to examine deixis errors in the speech of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers across different severity, language choice, age, gender and others. In addition, those who have interaction with Wernicke aphasia are supposed to provide easy-to-understand questions to avoid more occurrences of deixis inaccuracy.
