Abstract

The transition from online to onsite English classroom resulted in the challenge for tenth graders to be more skillful in actively engaging into English conversation activities. However, it requires better planning of English Club as curricular lesson to enhance student’s participation. This study was intended to develop the syllabus of English Club to be a joyful extracurricular for tenth graders at a senior high school in Daha Kediri. The need analysis used questionnaire and interview to find the required data of student’s speaking practice in English Club activities. The findings show that English Club plays an important role in supporting students to practice speaking. The students also thought that the English Club had a great way of encouraging their motivation to practice speaking with friends. In other words, English Club gives them more joyful experience and knowledge from the learning atmosphere which is fun and comfortable making them more interested in practicing speaking.

Abstract

Reading in large classes can lead to many difficulties demanding for various teaching strategies to overcome any difficulties. This research aimed to find the difficulties found in large classes of reading and analyzed the strategies used to overcome them. It used a systematic analysis method that identifies existing literature available online. The data collection was carried out through systematic literature review stages: 1) framing questions for a review, 2) identifying relevant work, 3) assessing the quality of studies, 4) summarizing the evidence, and 5) interpreting the findings. The results show that students learning English in large classes particularly in secondary schools are always constrained in making inference, finding main idea, retention of detail information, understanding vocabulary, and locating reference. Concerning the strategies, junior and senior high school students must be involved in joyful and meaningful group fun activities forreading. However, at university level, the self and autonomous learning style must be implemented. The finding implies on the need for collaborative learning method and also group fun activities for reading. It can be also helped by utilizing the technology and digital platform to make the students have more experiences inlearning reading in large class.

Abstract

Understanding Alzheimer's disease affecting the communication ability can be done through investigating the language impairment of the sufferers. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the language impairments of person with Alzheimer’s disease as represented in The Father movie. It focused on the semantic and pragmatic impairment in the speech produced by Anthony as the main character with Alzheimer’s disease. Qualitative method is employed to get a deep understanding of the language impairments. The findings of this study indicated that the types of semantic impairments found are: errors in verbal fluency, difficulty in word comprehension, empty speech, word retrieval difficulty, semantic paraphasia, and naming difficulty. In addition, the types of pragmatic impairments found are repeating ideas, speaking too loudly, talking excessively at inappropriate times, and deviating from the topic. These findings have important implications for healthcare professionals and caregivers who work with people with Alzheimer's disease. By understanding the specific language impairments experienced by people with this condition, they can develop effective communication strategies that take into account the person's individual needs and abilities. Furthermore, more people can help to support the sufferer of Alzheimer's disease and enhance their well-being and social connections.

Abstract

Difficulties of producing speech sound in stutterers are indicated by the repetition, pause, prolongation, revision, and filled pause on the speaking. However, such difficulties do not hinder the communication as shown in the speech of a stand-up comedian named Drew Lynch. This study aims at exploring the types of fluency disorder identified in Lynch’s utterances on stage. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method employed through the process of observing, transcribing, describing, and analyzing his utterances in American Got Talent videos. The result shows Lynch produces all kinds of disfluency covering filled pause, phrase repetition, revision, multisyllabic whole-word repetition, monosyllabic whole-word repetition, repetition of individual sound or syllable, prolongation of sound, and block. The monosyllabic whole-word repetition is more dominant. The combination happens between revision with monosyllabic whole-word repetition, prolongation, or multisyllabic whole-word repetition. These findings confirm that in the context of stand-up comedy, the disfluencies in stuttering do not hamper the transfer of meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the type of stuttering and analyze intonation that appears on Matice Ahnjamine in her YouTube vlog. Matice’s videos contain her stuttering life. The stuttering disorder as the difficulty in speaking can be seen from its type and the intonation pattern used when making statement. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences from the selected videos. The data analysis employs Zebrowski's theory (2003) on the type of stuttering, also a combination of Gimson (1975) and Wells (2006) theories in analyzing intonation in Matice's declarative sentences. The findings show four types of stuttering made by Matice, namely repetition, silent pause, prolonged vowel, and interjection. In addition, the intonation used in her speech shows that in the final words and stuttering words have different intonations because when stuttering words appear sometimes the intonation is not clear. Based on the findings, the dominant type of stuttering type appears is repetition and the intonation which often used at the end of the final word is falling intonation.

Abstract

Gadgets are often considered to interfere with early childhood development, but gadget technology benefits children's language acquisition. This study aims to determine the English vocabulary acquisition of children aged four to six years from their habit of accessing entertainment through gadgets. The participants in this study were 53 children aged 4-6 years in a rural preschool in Malang. This research used a qualitative method with a descriptive explanation. Data collection techniques were conducted through class observation and interviews with teachers and parents. The results of this study showed that the subjects' foreign language proficiency in English was seen from the acquisition of vocabulary and understanding of the content they watched repeatedly. Second language mastery is also seen in the subject's ability to mention colors, simple verbs, nouns, and adjectives in English. The children acquired their foreign language of both expressive and receptive English vocabulary through their gadgets with the support of parental guidance. It implies that gadgets with controlled screen time and supervision can positively impact children’s foreign language acquisition.

Abstract

Power can change how people act, how they think, what they do, and what policies they follow. People can reflect their power through the use of politeness strategies in their speech. This study aims to identify the types of politeness strategies and sub-strategies used in characters of Bridgerton Season 1 and explain how power is represented through politeness strategies. Its scenes and dialogue show qualities of decency and strength that need more exploration using the design of descriptive qualitative method. The pragmatic analysis in this study employed the theory of politeness strategy and the representation concept. The findings showed the use of bald on-record strategy, positive and negative politeness strategies, and off-record strategy. In addition, the representations of each strategy involved reflective, inflectional, and constructionist approaches. In the movie, the royal family, which includes kings, queens, princes, and their heirs, performed a symbol of power that plays a role in how power is used. Notably, the royal family serves as the show's symbol of power, highlighting its link to supremacy and authority. It implied that power is a sovereign thing based on authority and sovereignty. As the implication of this study, the future researchers should use sources of information that cover wider contexts.

Abstract

Public speaking, including presenting a graduation speech, becomes unintentionally complex because it has standardization. Presenting outstanding speeches becomes a challenge for English Foreign Language (EFL) learners, who delegate themselves as public speakers. This research compares graduation speeches by Taylor Swift, a native speaker, and Armaya Doremi, an EFL student. It is to identify the intricate skills that should be mastered in public speaking, namely using discourse markers. The descriptive qualitative method was used to find interpersonal markers used by Taylor Swift and Armaya Doremi. The theory used to analyze the data was the interpersonal marker theory by Ädel (2010). The findings demonstrated that the interpersonal markers used in both graduation speeches were linguistic comments, discourse organization, speech act labels, and references to the audience. Taylor Swift, a native speaker, used all main categories of interpersonal markers and longer interpersonal markers than Armaya Doremi, as an EFL learner. Future researchers are suggested to dig deeper into the topic, particularly concerning interpersonal markers of spontaneous speech in various contexts.

Abstract

The thoughts and the way psychopaths deliver their speech are definitely dissimilar to normal person. There are specific techniques they used in their verbal speech. This study analyzes the semantic techniques in the utterances of psychopaths during interviews on their experience. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were in the form of utterances of the seven psychopaths and serial killers in The Fear Files channel. There were thirteen data in the form of utterances that contained with semantic techniques used by the psychopaths and serial killers in the interviews. The data were classified using Timor and Weiss framework in analyzing the semantic techniques. The results show the semantic techniques covering vocabulary, figurative language, positive and negative connotation, anaphora and repetition. The most category used by the subjects is repetition followed by anaphora and vocabulary. The least used are positive and negative connotation and figurative language. Each of the psychopath represents the characteristics such as the expression of irresponsibility, compulsive lying, expression of impulsive behavior, manipulative speech, lack of empathy, poor behavior control.
