Abstract

In the utterances of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers, there are deixis inaccuracy or errors that can make the interlocutor unable to understand the meaning of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. Existing research on deixis is still limited to ordinary people's speech, so in-depth research is needed on deixis in the utterance of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers, especially on deixis errors. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types and analyze the meaning of deixis errors expressed by Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. The deixis errors were identified from the utterances produced by four Wernicke's aphasia sufferers on YouTube channels. Data retrieval is in the form of choosing a few words that are only included in the expression of the use of deictic errors identified according to Levinson (1983). After that, the utterances containing deixis errors were interpreted from the context and the typology of the inaccuracy. The finding shows three out of five types of deixis errors made by Wernicke's aphasia sufferers. The most dominant type of deixis errors found is personal deixis. The results of this study can be helpful for further research to examine deixis errors in the speech of Wernicke's aphasia sufferers across different severity, language choice, age, gender and others. In addition, those who have interaction with Wernicke aphasia are supposed to provide easy-to-understand questions to avoid more occurrences of deixis inaccuracy.

Abstract

This study discusses the slip of the tongue found in male and female debaters of Advance Debate Community (ADC). This particular topic is chosen with the assumption that gender difference can influence slip of the tongue. It aims at describing how the slip of the tongue produced by male and female debaters on ADC debate performance. In addition, it deciphers the factors causing the slips of tongue.  To get the intended results, this study used descriptive analysis to explain the existing data. The ADC debate record was converted to text manually. Then, the result was identified into the utterances containing slip of tongue. The researchers classified data types based on the slip of tongue model according to Caroll (1986). There are eight types of slip of tongue presented, namely: anticipation, perseveration, reversal/exchange, blend, misderivation, substitution, addition and deletion. The findings show that the male debaters produce more slip of tongue by displaying thirteen slip of tongue with five different types, namely: anticipation, misderivation, substitution, addition, and deletion. While female debaters display fewer slip of tongue, that is nine slip of tongue but more varied with six different types, namely: anticipation, blend, misderivation, substitution, addition and deletion.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is the most critical element in learning English, and it can be obtained by applying games in teaching-learning activities designed for millennial teens. This study aims to identify whether the eight-grader students taught using the "Know Your Dictionary" game had higher vocabulary mastery than those who did not. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study was conducted on the eighth grade of Junior High School of Ma'arif 2 Pamekasan. It had two groups to be investigated; they were A class as experimental group and B class as the control group. The instruments of this study were tests and documentation. The study verified Wright's theory that students could foster their vocabulary through games. The research results indicate a significant impact of treatment on the students' vocabulary mastery. The students given treatment using the "Know Your Dictionary" game had higher vocabulary mastery than those taught conventionally. The experimental group's post-test results are proven to be higher than their pre-test scores and those of the control group. It confirms that the game effectively fostered the students' vocabulary mastery

Abstract

  Figure of speech used in literary writing touches feelings, emotions based on an image of things seen, and actions experienced. When it applies to the language in a movie, it may furnish new effects or fresh insights into an idea or a subject. This study explored the figure of speech representing religious education values in Moustafa Akkad's The Message movie. As qualitative descriptive research, the source of data was the script of the movie analyzed from the sociolinguistic point of view. The result shows that the film used the figurative language to express religious education values through irony, simile, personification, paradox, hyperbole, oxymoron, metaphor, repetitive, metonymy, antithesis, onomatopoeia, and symbol.  Also, Moustafa Akkad presented several religious values applicable to teaching English for Islamic Studies.

Abstract

Does Self-Efficacy Moderate the Contribution of Metacognitive Awareness to Listening Comprehension? Current studies relate the issue of listening skills to several aspects. However, it still requires more empirical finding on the contribution of self-efficacy and metacognition toward listening comprehension. This study aimed to find the effect of metacognition on listening ability through self-efficacy and seek a suitable structural model. The chosen design was ex post facto research with a correlation using a path analysis model. This research was conducted at one of the state Islamic high schools in the city of Kediri. A total of 250 ten grader students participated in this research. Three instruments were used to collect data, including a closed questionnaire about self-efficacy, a closed questionnaire about students' metacognition sensitivity, and listening questions that adopted the TOEFL Junior Test. The results showed that the metacognitive influence model on listening did not significantly affect (p = .180), while the other two models showed a significant effect (metacognitive on self-efficacy, p = .000; self-efficacy on listening ability, p = .011). However, the indirect effect of students' metacognition abilities on listening ability through self-efficacy was significant at .059. Related to the path analysis model, the partial-mediated path analysis model was compiled, modified into a full-mediated model to meet the criteria of goodness of fit index.

Abstract

One major difficulty of a person with schizophrenia is the ability to communicate and express his or her thought just like the common people due to several symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions. It may result in various type of speech abnormalities. This study aims to present a comprehensive description on the types of speech abnormality of the schizophrenic main character in Fractured movie. It is based on the assumption that Ray Monroe as the main character has represented the schizophrenic speech abnormalities. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, this study took the data from Ray Monroe's utterances transcribed from the movie, then analyzed them using the framework of Liddle et al. and Covintong et al. to describe how the speech abnormality appears. The findings indicated that of the schizophrenic's utterances cover eight types of speech abnormality. These included weakening of the purpose, looseness, strange logic, strange sentences, concept preservation, and distractibility. The positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, which have an impact on thought, language, and emotion, are the two main symptoms that create the speech abnormalities. When Ray Monroe made a claim using illogical language and without supporting evidence based on reality and developed odd logic. Keywords: psycholinguistics, schizophrenia, speech abnormality

Abstract

This study aims to identify the type of stuttering and analyze intonation that appears on Matice Ahnjamine in her YouTube vlog. Matice’s videos contain her stuttering life. The stuttering disorder as the difficulty in speaking can be seen from its type and the intonation pattern used when making statement. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences from the selected videos. The data analysis employs Zebrowski's theory (2003) on the type of stuttering, also a combination of Gimson (1975) and Wells (2006) theories in analyzing intonation in Matice's declarative sentences. The findings show four types of stuttering made by Matice, namely repetition, silent pause, prolonged vowel, and interjection. In addition, the intonation used in her speech shows that in the final words and stuttering words have different intonations because when stuttering words appear sometimes the intonation is not clear. Based on the findings, the dominant type of stuttering type appears is repetition and the intonation which often used at the end of the final word is falling intonation.

Abstract

Classroom discourse plays a pivotal role in the conversational context at schools. The teacher as a speaking model needs to consider the speech and diction during the conversation discourse. One way to help the interaction is by employing code-switching practice since the choice of language in class discourse is essential for creating a practical and easy-to-understand class. This study aimed to find the types and functions of code-switching practiced by the English teacher. By employing a descriptive qualitative design, the data were obtained from classroom observation completed by an audio recorder based on the theory of code-switching from Poplack (1980) and Mattson & Burenhult (1999). Then, the researchers transcribed and analyzed the data into data reduction, data display, and making an inference to explore the types and the functions of code-switching practice. The participant of this study was Mrs. Zu (Pseudo), an English teacher at SMAN 2 Pare. The finding presented the types of code-switching involving inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. The functions of code-switching cover topic switches, affective functions, and repetitive functions. The dominant practice was intra-sentential switching with affective functions during the classroom discourse. These functions help students comprehend the meaning transferred during classroom interaction.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools provide various platforms for students to develop their talents in English skills and provide teachers with opportunities to be more active and creative in developing English ideas, such as providing language methods and language programs in Islamic boarding schools. Islamic boarding schools are also a unit that cannot be separated from the reality of society to be able to answer the challenges of the times. How Islamic boarding schools have a significant role in developing student acquisition in second language countries and how the students’ attitudes in Islamic boarding schools affect English language acquisition. This paper aims to find out or compare language acquisition in modern and traditional Islamic boarding schools. Islamic boarding schools cannot be separated from their relationship with society in general. Because the purpose of Islamic boarding schools is to form students, they can enter the community. This study used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to conduct this systematic literature review. There are several external and internal factors in mastering foreign languages, especially English, in Islamic boarding schools, starting from the process, environment, participants, target of the language, Islamic values ​​and culture in Islamic boarding schools, and an evaluation of English language acquisition. This study only includes 21 articles regarding English language acquisition at modern Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia; it is hoped that further researchers will explore English language acquisition in several Islamic Boarding schools except Indonesia to review more articles and reach the international area.

Abstract

The autistic savant is a rare condition that occurs in people with autism that affects the ability in expressing and receiving language information appropriately. This study aimed to describe the expressive and receptive language disorder of Shaun Murphy as the autistic savant main character in The Good Doctor movie. It used descriptive qualitative method to get a deep understanding of the language disorder as portrayed in the movie. The data were taken from Shaun Murphy’s utterances transcribed from The Good Doctor movie. The analysis employed the theory of Carroll to describe how autistic savant person communicates with others. The findings from this study indicated that of the twelve utterances produced by Shaun Murphy, only four from six types of language disorders were found. They included stuttering, phonological disorder, difficulty in understanding the concept, and difficulty in following directions. Shaun Murphy dominantly produced stuttering. He often spoke with stammering, hanging, and repetition of sentences. In this case, the language disorders of the main character appeared when he was panic, happy, anxious, and unconfident; which could influence his way of communication.
