Abstract

This study explores the persuasive techniques employed in advertisements for male skincare products on Instagram. Specifically, it examines the types and functions of these techniques as used in Instagram captions from beauty product accounts, focusing on the official L’Oréal Paris account. The research data were sourced from several Instagram captions on the official L’Oréal Paris account. A descriptive method was used to analyze the data, drawing on Lamb's theory (2019) and Keraf's theory (2004). The dataset comprises 24 Instagram captions advertising male skincare products on the L’Oréal Paris official account. Lamb's theory (2019) offers a framework for analyzing emotive and inclusive language, while Keraf’s theory (2004) emphasizes identification, suggestion, and compensation techniques. The analysis reveals that the persuasive techniques identified using Lamb's theory (2019) include emotive language (8 instances), everyday/colloquial language (7), inclusive language (1), evidence (3), rhetorical questions (2), appeals (2), and hyperbole (1). Meanwhile, applying Keraf’s theory (2004) identified techniques such as identification (8 instances), suggestion (13), and compensation (3). The findings indicate that emotive language and suggestion are the most frequently employed persuasive techniques, emphasizing the emotional and suggestive appeals in L’Oréal Paris’s male skincare advertisements. Future research could explore additional persuasive theories or examine a broader range of product categories to gain a more comprehensive understanding of advertising strategies on social media.

Abstract

In this digital era, YouTube Kids has become one of the applications most frequently used by children with a variety of content, some aimed at education and others at entertainment. This research analyzes educational videos specifically for children to examine the multimodal strategies in Miss Rachel's YouTube educational videos that support early childhood vocabulary acquisition. It uses Kress and Leeuwen (2006) multimodality theory, which includes seven semiotic modes: linguistic, visual, gestural, audio, spatial, temporal, and three-dimensional. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data consisting of video footage of Miss Rachel introducing vocabulary through various multimodal strategies. The results show that each mode contributes meaningfully to the vocabulary learning process. All modes support each other and create a fun, interactive, and meaningful learning experience for children. This research concludes that multimodal strategies in Miss Rachel videos effectively support vocabulary acquisition in early childhood. It also recommends that educators, parents, and digital content developers consider using multimodal approaches in children's language learning activities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the linguistic and paralinguistic features used by students who experience English-speaking anxiety in front of the Islamic Senior High School of Al–Karimi Gresik class. Speaking anxiety makes students afraid to express themselves because they feel incompetent and afraid of making mistakes. The study aimed to discover the linguistic and paralinguistic features shown when students are anxious about speaking. A qualitative method was used with data from voice recorder transcripts and notes. Further data collection was carried out using questionnaires to determine each participant's anxiety level. The findings show that code-mixing is the linguistic feature that most students exhibit. They constantly switch languages to Javanese or Indonesian when they experience anxiety due to vocabulary limitations. Meanwhile, pausing in the middle of sentences is the most exhibited paralinguistic feature. Based on the findings, it is recommended that English class students increase their vocabulary to reduce the possibility of language switching. In addition, teachers can ask students to prepare visuals and prompts to eliminate pauses and boost fluency.

Abstract

One manifestation of gender injustice is the unequal representation of women in the entertainment and media industries particularly in movies. In Barbie 2023, the characters play a substantial role in depicting the reality of gender issues. This research aims to analyze how women are represented in the 2023 Barbie film. It employed Critical Discourse Analysis involving an in-depth analysis of the grammar, narrative structure, word usage, and social context of the discourse representing gender injustice. The study is done to reveal how discourse can influence the formation of thought, culture, and power in society.  The main data for this research is the film and its dialogue transcriptions. The analysis process focuses on in-depth analysis of conversations between characters and their interactions in order to reveal how female figures are depicted in the story. Sara Mills' discourse analysis theoretical framework is applied to dissect the choice of diction and sentence structure used to represent women, alongside the theory of subject position, object, and reader position. In line with the principles of CDA, which bridges textual analysis with broader socio-political critique, this study also incorporates feminist and gender theory to explore how these linguistic choices and positional roles perpetuate patriarchal power structures and ideologies within the societal context reflected in the film. The research results demonstrated gender biases and stereotypes in film dialogue, which reflected the condition of gender inequality in wider society. Analysis reveals that language actively reinforces existing power structures and gender disparities. These findings highlight the need for continued critical examination of gender representations in media. Future research should build on this work by applying evolving perspectives, such as intersectional feminism or queer theory, to analyze a wider array of cinematic works. This will foster an ongoing scholarly dialogue and provide deeper insights into the complex construction of gender in popular culture.
