Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of professional competence and teachers? discipline to teachers? performance at Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Gantarang District of Bulukumba Regency, both partial and simultaneously. This research is a quantitative research with the ex post facto method. Respondents in this research are 41 teachers, taken purposive from 196 teachers. The data collection methods used are questionnaire and documentation then analyzed by using regression analysis to examine the hypothesis. The results of this research indicate that: 1) professional competence affect to teachers? performance with relative contribution of 40,2% and effective contribution of 17,2%; 2) teachers? discipline affect to teachers? performance with relative contribution of 59,8% and effective contribution of 25,6%; 3) professional competence and teachers? discipline together affect to teachers? performance with relative contribution of 100% and effective contribution of 42,8%.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the average level of influence of the SQ4Rmethod on reading comprehension as a whole, based on education levels, and based onthe regions. The research method used is a quantitative method with a meta-analysisdesign, namely by analyzing the results of research that have been published nationallyrelated to the influence of the SQ4R method on reading comprehension. The documentsources analyzed in this research were twenty articles and thesis obtained through GoogleScholar search published in the 2015-2021 range covering the educational levels ofElementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School, and University, whichdiscussed using the SQ4R method on reading comprehension. The instrument usedcoding sheet that summarizes the data and information of the articles and thesis. Based onthe average level of influence of the SQ4R method on reading comprehension as a wholeis 0.893 high category. The average level of influence of the SQ4R method on readingcomprehension based on education levels, in Elementary School is 0.741 mediumcategory, Junior High School is 0.961 high category, Senior High School is 0.988 highcategory, and University is 0.594 medium category and also the average level ofinfluence of the SQ4R method on reading comprehension based on regions, Java Region0.843 high category, Bali 0.922 high category, Lampung 0.339 small category,Kalimantan 0.406 small category, Sumatera 0.943 high category, Aceh 0.989 highcategory and Riau 0.571 medium category. The conclusion that the average level ofinfluence SQ4R method reading comprehension as whole is 0.839 in high category, itmeans that SQ4R is very suitable method on teaching reading comprehension. Based oneducational levels, the SQ4R method on reading comprehension is suitable to conduct forall levels of education, and Based on regions, in high and medium category is Java, Bali,Sumatera, Aceh and Riau, it means that the SQ4R method on reading comprehensionmany gave contributions in five of regions.

Abstract

The Content and language integrated learning is learning a subject or part of a subject in a foreign language. So, students learn both of content knowledge and the foreign language. By CLIL, students learn English as foreign language integrated with the subjects or topics studied in department. This paper is aimed   to presents the material development for English language teaching for Biology Department with CLIL approach. The Rational for choosing this topic is based on the need for the students of Biology Department to learn the relevant English teaching materials with their field of study. The study is a qualitative study. Data were collected by using document analysis of curriculum of Biology Department as well as interviews with the lectures. Data then analyzed by using the framework of Miles and Huberman: data reduction, data presentation, conclusion/verification. The finding of this research that the CLIL materials needed for Biology Education Department included a number of topics of Biology studied in English.

Abstract

The research is aimed to develop English Instructional Module for Biology Education Department: Evolution at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The Research and Development model implemented in this study was 4-D Approach (Define, Design, Development, and Disseminate), but Disseminate phase is not conducted because corona pandemic. In this research involved the students of Biology Education Department, the lecturers of Biology Education Department, and 2 experts from English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The researcher used three instruments which are Questionnaire, Interview Guideline and Evaluation Checklist. To obtain the data, the research will conduct an interview as qualitative analysis for the students and lecturers by using interview guidelines constructed based on the theory of Dudley Evans and St. John. Meanwhile, the researcher will use evaluation checklist as quantitative analysis and the module material design would validated by the expert’s judgment. The results of this research expressed that the students of Biology Education needs an instructional material specifically in Theory of Evolution materials in context module which include integrated skills and not general module but focus on English Specific Purposes based on Theory of Evolution due to the students’ needs of Biology Education. The data of the students’ need became the basis in developing module. This research can be utilized both for lecturer and students as a learning source. Moreover, for further research, it could be a helpful guideline in developing a language teaching material by adapting the same model.

Abstract

This research aims at finding the Contribution of Teachers’ Pedagogical Competence toward the Effectiveness of Teaching of English at MTsN Balang-Balang. This research used the qualitative descriptive research, that is the researcher observe the teaching and learning process and interact with the teacher by interview and observation.The researcher found that the contribution of teachers pedagogy competence toward the effectiveness of teaching of English, seems the teacher have made serious effort in conducting the teaching and learning to make more effective in teaching of English in the class. This contribution seen from how they organize the learning from arranged the teaching plan, teaching and learning process, and assessment. The teachers were also able to motivate the students to attend the class, induce the students to learn the material as well as explain the material clearly so that the students could comprehend it easily. Furthermore, the students were also active in asking and answering questions both from the teacher. In the section of discussion, the students were also able to conclude the materials taught during the teaching and learning process. It means that teacher’s pedagogy competence could improve students’ motivation to learn.

Abstract

his research aimed at finding out the gender analysis on slang language used by the eight semester students of English Education Department in their daily conversation at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The researcher applied qualitative descriptive research. The participant of this research was the eight semester students of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar which consisted of 10 students. The participants were taken by using purposive sampling technique which consisted of 5 male students and also 5 female students. The data were collected through interviews and observations. The result of the data indicated that slang language used by the eight semester students of English Education Department in their daily conversation were slang in theater, art slang, public school or university slang as well as society slang. Besides, the male and female slang language was different caused of some factors such as situation and condition, age and politeness, as well as gender itself. There was a significant difference between male and female students’ percentage in using slang language. The mean score of male percentage in using slang language (66.48) while female only (33.50).Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher drew a conclusion that male and female students of English Education Department used slang language in different way and also frequency.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has made a strong commitment to eliminate gender discrimination. To achieve greater gender equality and equity, President Abdurrahman Wahid issued the Presidential Instruction Number 9 Year 2000 to promote gender mainstreaming with the objective of achieving gender equality and equity in all sectors of life. This paper investigates gender perspec-tives of the students in three Islamic Primary schools: one state school and two private schools in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data were gathered by using a number of techniques: group interviews, student drawings, listing famous people and selecting favorite person from their lists of famous people. Three main points emerged from the study: 1) the majority of students had gender-neutral views on sports/games, employment and a range of other social activities; 2) persistent gender stereotyping of some roles by students; and 3) the students from the three schools had divergent views on gender roles and gender identities.

Abstract

Gender sebagai konstruksi sosial telah disosialisasikan sejak manusia lahir. Laki-laki dan perempuan dibedakan dari berbagai aspek termasuk sifat, peran, tanggung jawab. Perbedaan gender telah menyumbangkan ketidakadilan (inequalities) dalam masyarakat dan bernegara, termasuk sector pendidikan. Sektor Pendidikan merupakan sektor penting untuk pencapaian kesetaraan dan keadilan gender. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran peran gender di suatu madrasah tsanawiah swasta di Kab Gowa. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara dan observasi. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan kerangka analisa penelitian kualitatif dari Taylor and Bogdan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggambaran peran gender pada madrasah ini umumnya adil gender. Pembagian peran warga madrasah nampak adil. Pembagian peran didasarkan pada kompetensi masing-masing. Peserta didik juga memiliki cita-cita pekerjaan yang progressif. Gambaran peran yang adil ini tentunya berbeda dengan penelitian terdahulu yang menggambarkan peran gender secara tidak adil.

Abstract

This paper investigated gender roles in three Islamic Primary schools in South Sulawesi including one state Islamic primary school in Bone Regency, one private Islamic primary school in Wajo Regency and one private Islamic primary school in Makassar city. These three schools represents three different socio-culture economic backgrounds in South Sulawesi. The data were gathered using qualitative interviews and observations. The schools principals, teachers and the head of school commitee were interviews in-deptly and their activities concerning gender roles were observed including in school meeting and teaching-learning process. Then, the data were analysed qualitatively. This study uncovered three main points: 1) The three school communities shared stereotyped gender role ideology and practices; 2) They have low level of knowledge and opinion about gender mainstreaming; and 3) they have different gender practices. These genders roles of the school community influence the teaching of character education to their students.

Abstract

Indonesia has adopted gender equality policy by issuing a number of law including Gender Mainstreaming policy issued by the President Abdurrahman Wahid with the Presidential Instruction No. 9 year 2000. This policy was already issued 16 years ago.  This paper aimed to examine the influence of gender mainstreaming policy on the textbooks used in Indonesian education as well examines the teachers’ perspectives on gender roles. Several research questions were posed: Did the policy influence the gender portrayals of the English textbooks used by teachers in State Islamic Junior High School?  Was any change in gender portrayals reflected in the English textbooks for all classes? In analysing textbooks. I used the content analysis with the following categories: visibility (visible or invisible); equity (balance or imbalance); stereotyped or non-stereotyped; neutral or gender based; progressive or non-progressive. The research uncover that gender mainstreaming policy has big influence on English textbooks used by the teachers in a state Islamic junior high school.
