Abstract

This study examines the low level of adolescent participation in utilizing technology-based public services in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKJ), despite the implementation of the Jakarta Smart City (JSC) initiative since 2014. Limited engagement among young citizens indicates a gap between smart city development and public education effectiveness, particularly in fostering smart people for sustainable urban governance. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Gall, Gall, and Borg framework. The unit of analysis consists of adolescents aged 10–19 years residing in Pulo Gadung District, East Jakarta. A proportional random sampling technique was applied, yielding 397 respondents from a target population of 43,760 adolescents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with WarpPLS to examine the relationships among smart city maturity, public education management, and adolescent participation. The study develops and validates a smart city maturity measurement instrument, a public education management instrument, and an urban environmental management model oriented toward a sustainable global smart city. Additionally, training modules and Training of Trainers (TOT) programs based on the smart people concept are produced to strengthen youth engagement. This research contributes by providing empirically grounded instruments and models to support evidence-based policies and enhance adolescent participation in smart city ecosystems.

Abstract

The increase in domestic and industrial activities has led to a significant rise in wastewater generation, potentially causing environmental pollution if not properly treated. One of the widely developed wastewater treatment technologies is the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) due to its high treatment efficiency and stable operational performance. However, this system still requires considerable energy consumption and generates residues that may contribute to environmental impacts. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the environmental impacts of an MBBR-based wastewater treatment system using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach assisted by OpenLCA software. The research employed a quantitative method with the LCA framework consisting of goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory (LCI), life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), and interpretation stages. The data included energy consumption, chemical usage, sludge production, and influent characteristics. Environmental impact analysis was conducted using the ReCiPe Midpoint (H) method. The results showed that the MBBR system achieved removal efficiencies of approximately 85% for BOD, 80% for COD, and 78% for TSS. The LCA results indicated that the largest environmental impact category was Global Warming Potential (GWP) at 0.85 kg CO₂-eq/m³, dominated by electricity consumption contributing 65% of total impacts. Statistical analysis showed that energy consumption significantly affected GWP with a significance value of 0.001. The study revealed a trade-off between treatment efficiency and increasing environmental impacts due to high energy demand. Therefore, energy optimization and environmentally friendly technologies are essential for developing sustainable MBBR systems. Keywords: Life Cycle Assessment, OpenLCA, MBBR, Global Warming Potential.

Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) serves as a film-forming substance that significantly influences the physical properties of peel-off gel masks. Changes in the concentration of PVA can impact the formulation's quality, affecting factors like viscosity, ease of spreading, stickiness, and drying duration. The ethanolic extract of nutmeg seeds (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) is rich in flavonoids that possess antioxidant properties, making it an advantageous active component for the formulations of peel-off gel masks. This study aimed to formulate a peel-off gel mask containing nutmeg seed extract with different PVA concentrations (10%, 12%, and 14%) and to evaluate its physical characteristics. The extract was acquired through maceration with 96% ethanol, and its antioxidant ability was assessed by the DPPH method. The physical assessment involved examining organoleptic features, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and drying duration. The results were evaluated using One-Way ANOVA or Welch ANOVA, along with Tukey's HSD or Games-Howell post hoc tests based on the data characteristics. The findings indicated that the nutmeg seed extract displayed exceptionally strong antioxidant abilities, with an IC₅₀ value of 9.648 ppm. An increase in PVA concentration led to higher viscosity, adhesiveness, and drying duration, while it decreased spreadability. All formulations fulfilled the standards for organoleptic features, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, and drying time. Nonetheless, the formulation with 14% PVA had a viscosity slightly over the suggested standard range. From the overall initial physical assessment, the formulation with 12% PVA was regarded as the most well-balanced formulation. Nevertheless, this formulation exhibited a more turbid appearance than the formulation containing 10% PVA. Further studies, including physical stability and safety evaluations, are required to confirm its suitability as the optimal formulation.

Abstract

Commercial facial cleansers generally use synthetic surfactants such as SLS, which can potentially irritate the skin and damage the skin barrier if used in excessive concentrations and for long periods. This study aims to produce a facial bar soap formulation based on soapberry (Sapindus rarak DC.) and aloe vera (Aloe vera L.) extracts with the best quality, and to analyze its quality characteristics based on SNI 3532:2021. The study used a descriptive quantitative laboratory experiment method with three formulations, namely F0 (control without extract), F1 (5% soapberry extract and 8% aloe vera extract), and F2 (10% soapberry extract and 8% aloe vera extract), which were made using the cold process method. The parameters tested included pH, foam stability, organoleptic, moisture, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that all three formulas met the pH and foam stability requirements of SNI 3532:2021. F1 obtained the highest organoleptic value (4.33) and the most standard pH (9.36), while F2 excelled in foam stability (70.00%), increased skin moisture (53.75%), and antibacterial activity with a strong inhibition zone (11.43 mm). The diameter of the inhibition zone increased with increasing concentration of soapberry extract, from moderate (F0) to strong (F1 and F2). Overall, F2 can be considered as the best quality formulation because it excels in three of the five test parameters. The addition of soapberry and aloe vera extracts has been proven to improve the physical and functional quality of bar facial soap compared to the control formula, so it has the potential to be developed as a natural active ingredient in facial soap preparations.
