Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the representation of bisexual identity in Christina Lauren’s novel "Autoboyography." Through qualitative research, the aim is to reveal the discourse of bisexuality constructed by the acts and behaviors of other characters toward the male main characters using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, with a particular focus on Michel Foucault’s discursive approach. Another objective of this study is to examine the critical position of Christina Lauren as the novel’s author towards the issue of bisexuality. The findings reveal that the author created characters who both oppose and support bisexuality, thereby highlighting the issue of bisexuality in the 21st century. Through their narrative, the author sheds light on the challenges faced by male individuals living as bisexuals in a religiously conservative environment. By doing so, Christina Lauren not only addresses social issues surrounding bisexuality but also illustrates the main character's struggles in accepting a bisexual identity in an environment influenced by religious beliefs.

Abstract

In today's borderless world, people move quickly, forming diaspora communities with complex cultural lives. The culture shock that causes mental health disruption is common in these diaspora communities. Therefore, the study of this diaspora is crucial to be conducted. The novel entitled How to be an American Housewife represents the difficulties of becoming a diaspora subject in a new country with a new culture. This study focuses on the diaspora experience undergone by Shoko Morgan. The study aims to show the construction of diaspora identity, the condition of the Japanese diaspora community in America, and the author's critical position. This descriptive qualitative research utilized the cultural identity and diaspora theory proposed by Stuart Hall to unveil the diaspora identity in the novel. This research reveals that identity is always in some process of adaptation, transformation, and differences from new environments. The literary work under scrutiny shows the experience of Japanese immigrants at that time, such as feeling alienated, isolated, and discriminated against. Through this novel, Margaret Dilloway has represented her mother's challenging life experiences as a diaspora subject in the USA.

Abstract

In the Reformation period, the state regime still mobilizes traditional-ideal values as national culturewithout giving conceptual and operational explanations. In this article, I combine two approaches, cultural studies and postcolonial studies, for reading national culture as represented in some PresidentSoesilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s presidential speeches. I will analyze ideal-but-ambivalent constructionsof national culture in regime’s perspective as represented in those speeches, particularly, in the contextof continuous of national culture in regime’s perspective in those speeches, particularly, in the context ofthe government’s continuous mobilization of traditional meanings as the invisible power for Indonesianpeople, while, at the same time, placing emphasis on economic progress.Instead of a strategic culturalconstruction, national culture produces its own deconstruction and fails to be discursive formation.Further, I argue that the regime operates their governmentality by reconstructing newer nationalculture based on market economics as discursive constructions, which ideally can provide conceptualand material basis for state regime in conducting governance and for citizens in achieving welfare inneoliberal formation.

Abstract

Abstract

The portrayal of body shaming against women in films is a social critique of the act of body shaming. Hence, the study of body shaming in films is intriguing for future investigation. The objective of this research is to uncover the portrayal of body shaming towards women in films. The research data comprised of words and phrases that encompassed body shaming and were examined utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The data was acquired from the movie Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan. This study is also classified as critical-qualitative research. The research findings indicate that the film “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan” portrays three types of body shaming, which include comparing, commenting, and insulating individuals based on their physical appearance. Furthermore, the film's production background is influenced by the film development genre in Indonesia, and the producer's background as a comedian aligns with the genre of the film. In addition, this also highlights that the film production is also considered to have some motives to depict body shaming in the film, including the commercial motive, social culture, and ideology to struggle.

Abstract

This paper discusses some performing arts and rituals that carry the environmental theme in Jember. Artists and village governments respond creatively to environmental problems by creating several multi-form events, combining performances and certain rituals. We will use postcolonial ecocriticism as a theoretical framework to discuss some of their produced show events. Postcolonial ecocriticism emphasizes analysis to reveal how cultural texts present current ecological problems as a legacy of colonialism in aesthetic works that can function as advocacy and activism. The results of this study show that the performances and rituals develop critical awareness regarding environmental threats and problems in Jember and Indonesia. They bring the topic of the environment to invite the community to jointly maintain the sustainability of the human environment and criticize government policies to legitimize the destruction of nature in the name of development.

Abstract

This article examines two performance models of Reyog Ponorogo: the festival model and the obyokan model. These two competing models represent differing perspectives on one side, the interests of the artists and the community, and on the other, the interests of the state. By applying cultural studies theories, particularly those of representation and hegemony, this study analyzes data collected through observations of Reyog performances at both festival and obyokan events, as well as interviews with artists and community members. The findings reveal that the obyokan model emphasizes an egalitarian spirit, allowing artists greater aesthetic freedom and providing the community with a sense of belonging in Reyog culture. In contrast, the festival model has historically been associated with the state's efforts to impose order on Reyogartists and choreographies, while simultaneously promoting tourism in Ponorogo.
