Abstract

The process of understanding a presentation presented on television especially service society’s advertisement is very important in succeed supporting of a product which is produced. The purpose of this research is to know the background of television viewer and customer of service society’s advertisement about must immunization for children under five in 2013 and to know the process of decoding service society’s advertisement about must immunization for children under five in 2013 by using descriptive qualitative method, observation, not structural interview, focus group discussion and data analysis (flow model). The result of the research shows that decoding is an important part in a set of communication process because media cannot hegemony the viewer or the customer without television viewer’s decoding. The background and position of decoding show that knowing a same text which read and understood by the viewer set the viewer in the certain decoding position and known customer’s reception level upon the text that consumed. Keywords: perception, service society’s advertisement, decoding ABSTRAK Proses memahami dalam pemaknaan sebuah tayangan yang hadir di televisi terutama iklan layanan masyarakat sangatlah penting dalam mendukung keberhasilan sebuah produk yang telah diproduksi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui latar belakang penonton dan konsumen iklan layanan masyarakat imunisasi wajib bagi balita tahun 2013 dan untuk mengetahui proses decoding iklan layanan masyarakat imunisasi wajib bagi balita tahun 2013 dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, observasi, wawancara tidak terstruktur, wawancara kelompok fokus, dan analisis data (flow model). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa decoding adalah bagian terpenting dalam rangkaian proses komunikasi, karena tanpa decoding penonton, media tidak dapat menghegemoni penontonnya atau konsumennya. Latar belakang dan posisi decoding menunjukkan bahwa mengetahui sebuah teks yang sama dibaca dan dipahami oleh penonton menempatkan penonton pada posisi decoding tertentu dan diketahui tingkat penerimaan konsumen atas teks yang dikonsumsi. Abstract

AbstrakThe Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears adalah novel pertama dari Dinaw Mengestu yang menggambarkan kondisi komunitas diaspora Afrika di Amerika Serikat. Pengarang melukiskan kesulitan-kesulitan yang hadapi oleh subjek diaspora dari Ethiopia yang hidup di Amerika Serikat yang terinsspirasi dari pengalamannya karena dia juga merupakan bagian dari komunitas diaspora. Pembahasan ini diharapkan mampu untuk mengatahui kondisi dari subjek diaspora Afrika di Amerika Serikat, rintangan-rintangan yang mereka hadapi dan strategi bertahan yang mereka terapkan dengan tujuan untuk dikenal dan diterima oleh masyarakat dominan. Permasalahan-permasalahan tersebut akan dianalisa melalui teori poskolonial tentang hibriditas dari Homi K. Bhabha. Teori ini sesuai untuk mendiskusikan topik pembahasan karena hidup dalam diaspora menyebabkan masyarakat to memiliki identitas ganda. Di samping itu, analisis poskolonial tidak hanya membahas masalah-masalah yang berhubungan dengan negara penjanjah dan negara jajahan, tetapi juga dapat diterapkan untuk membahas hubungan antara masyarakat minoritas dan mayoritas. Hasil dari pembahasan ini menujukkan bahwa menjadi hibrid di tengah-tengah budaya dominan bagi subjek-subjek diaspora adalah suatu keharusan dengan tujuan agar dapat diterima oleh masyarakat dominan. Dalam pembahasan ini menjadi hibrid berarti subjek diaspora dapat mengadaptasi budaya dominan tanpa kehilangan budaya lokal seluruhnya. Konstruksi hibriditas dalam kasus ini menjadikan budaya Amerika sebagai yang lebih dominan dan orientasi ideal bagi subjek diaspora yang direpresentasikan dalam novel. The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears adalah suara dari Mengestu untuk menyampaikan bagaimana kondisi subjek diaspora Africa di Amerika Serikat.

Abstract

AbstractDelirium is a dystopian novel written by Lauren Oliver. In this novel, there is a depiction on how power and ruling position could be achieved by utilizing a process of negotiating beliefs and values rather than conducting a full coercive domination. The government as the dominant class in this novel initiates its attempt to gain power and ruling position from the people in the society through indoctrinating ideology by the apparatuses before finally gains the consensus from the dominated class. This study presents the elaboration on how hegemony works in a dystopian society which is influenced by the theme of physical-moral destruction, the embodiment of fear and the set of ultimate rules. As the theoretical framework to analyze the data in the novel, this study utilizes the theory of hegemony by Antonio Gramsci, the conception of ideology by Louis Althusser and the idea about coercive discipline by Michel Foucault. The purpose of this study is to delineate the stages of hegemony operation in a dystopian society and relates them to the actual hegemony of the United States as the alternate setting of the novel. The result of this study elaborates that hegemony is a process of gaining power in which the role of coercive elements in it is still needed in order to preserve the power and authority achieved by the dominant class after indoctrinating its ideology. This explains how both of the hegemony operation conducted by either the government in the novel or the United States is able to remain long and strong as it influences several important sectors such as economic, military, technology, culture and etc. From this result, it can be concluded that Delirium as a cultural product acts as one of the hegemonic apparatuses for the United States to strengthen its position as the beacon of the world.

Abstract

Being modern in local sphere at the 80s was a complicated process. Local societies experienced and dreamed modern cultures as the dominant discursive formation caused by Green Revolution, but they still believed and practiced traditional cultures. The New Order regime’s developmentalism policy resulted socio-cultural shifting and change in both cities and villages. This article, by combining cultural studies and postcolonial studies, discusses genealogy of socio-cultural shifting and change in a village at the 80s when modern cultures came into peasants’ life--world through public television programs, education, and industrial products. However, I see the villagers could play in-between space to appropriate some modern cultures and negotiate some traditional cultures into their daily life. The cultural in-betweenness has represented the dynamics of village postcoloniality under direction of the New Order regime and has made modernity as ideological dream for the villagers in constructing their locality. Abstract

This article aims to criticize the incorporation and commodification of Using cultures undergone by Abdullah Azwar Anas in Banyuwangi, East Java. To answer the problem, we analyze primary data from our field research and secondary data from online media related to AAA’s efforts to incorporate, articulate, and commodify Using cultures into various carnival programs (2011-2017) by applying theories of commodification, postmodernism, and hegemony. The result of this study shows that, driven by his desire to promote Using cultures globally in the midst of postmodern trends, since 2011 the government of Banyuwangi has created many carnivals and festivals, such as “Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival”, “Banyuwangi Beach Jazz Festival”, “Parade Gandrung Sewu”, and other various programs. Economically, the programs are idealized to support the regional economic growth through tourism activities, both for domestic and international tourists, by displaying traditional expressions with new styles and performances. Politically, the carnivals and festivals can support AAA efforts to negotiate its political concern in order to produce consensus.Copyright (c) 2017 by KARSA. Abstract

The media industry opens shared access to man and woman in pursuing their career. The contestation of woman in media is perceived to be the liberation against the patriarchal ideology. The perception cannot be separated from the discourses  of the pubic. Man, since thousand years ago, has been viewed to be more logic and superior than his counterpart. Woman is believe to have no ability to use his logics more than her heart and emotion. This paper tries to focus on the images of woman represented by the advertisement. Employing the foucault’s  discourse theory and Roland Barthes’s  semiotic of myth, it is aimed to disclose how woman represented and the ideology works underlying the representation.     The analysis shows that the ads in the mass media cannot be blamed to be the means to maintain the patriarchal hegemony only. The ads, in fact, are the representation arena pursued by the competing forces of discourse in the society. They, besides functioned to market the product, may provide and offer some ideological content. It means the ads cannot be whole-generalized to be the patriarchal media : they than have a potential  subversive shocking the hegemonic ideology. The feminist discourse evoke in the ads offers the strategic role of woman in the contestation. In sum, the bodies of woman in the ads are the fragmented ideological bodies slice by the negotiation of varying discourses of ideology developing in the society.

Abstract

Upaya untuk melestarikan budaya harus dimulai dari bahasa daerah dimana dengan nilai-nilai budaya tersebut dapat dibagikan atau dikomunikasikan di antara anggota masyarakat. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ragam bahasa daerah yang merujuk pada istilah dalam bahasa Indonesia dalam video “Tik Tok” serta peran media tersebut dalam memperkenalkan ragam Bahasa Daerah sebagai bentuk ekspresi budaya bangsa. Penelitian ini menggunakan perspektif dari new media untuk mendiskusikan persoalan tersebut. Metode penelitian menggunakan penelitian kualitatif. The source of the data obtained is from primary data in the form of a Tiktok video entitled: Compilation of regional languages. The data collection technique uses documentation techniques, namely identifying videos of various regional languages ​​in Tiktok. Data analysis technique using reduction technique. Hasil penelitian menunjukan ragam bahasa yang terdapat dalam video TikTok yang sudah dikumpulkan oleh peneliti, terdapat ragam bahasa dari Daerah Jawa, Sunda, Solo, Minang, Banyumas, dan Manado. Peran media sosial yaitu video tiktok terkait ragam bahasa atau penyebutan Bahasa Daerah dalam memperkenalkan budaya Bahasa Indonesia sehingga dapat menjadikan Bahasa Indonesia yang beragam menjadi populer, terwariskan atau ditirukan, dan diterima dilapisan masyarakat. Video tiktok sudah menjadikan budaya Indonesia yaitu Bahasa Indonesia menjadi populer diterima disetiap seluruh masyarakat baik negeri atau luar negeri.                Efforts to be with culture must start from the local language where the cultural values ​​can be shared or communicated among community members. This paper aims to find out the variety of regional languages ​​that refer to the terms in Indonesian in the video "Tik Tok" and the role of the media in introducing various regional languages ​​as a form of national cultural expression. For these problems, this study uses the perspective of new media. The research method uses qualitative research. The results show the variety of languages ​​contained in the TikTok videos that have been collected by researchers, there are various languages ​​from the Java, Sundanese, Solo, Minang, Banyumas, and Manado regions. The role of social media is tiktok videos related to various languages ​​or the mention of regional languages ​​in introducing Indonesian culture so that they can make various Indonesian languages ​​popular, inherited or imitated, and accepted in society. Tiktok videos have made Indonesian culture, namely the Indonesian language, become popular which is accepted by all people, both country and abroad.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the crisis of ecological significance that occurred in traditional rituals in the post-Reform era. Traditional rituals that genealogically seek to integrate human relationships with supernatural powers and natural harmony are massively incorporated into the tourism mechanism. To discuss the issue, we will combine Foucauldian and post-colonial exotic perspectives. The research data we took from our field research in Banyuwangi and news in online media. We analyze the data to find the hegemonic inclination in interpreting ritual under tourism regime. The results of this study indicate that the post-Reformation state regime increased ritual-based tourism activity to gain maximum financial benefits. Gradually, people are also affected by the hegemony of the discourse, so they begin to regularly celebrate rituals without emphasizing the ecological power in them. Under these conditions an eco-cultural movement is needed that can raise public awareness of the importance of returning to integrating rituals with ecological problems.

Abstract

This article deals with Roland Barthes’ mythological thinking and its methodological implication in literary studies. Its basic thinking is that in various modes of representation exist the dynamics of mythical signification using denotative signification as its basic and aims to address particular message to readers or viewers. Such signification intertwines with the complexity of discourses, histories, knowledge, and problems in the real life. Its final goal is to depoliticize and ex-nominates making something nameless dominant political interest in narrative naturally. Barthes also conceptualizes an idea on second myth that uses (the first) myth as its basis of signifying process to subvert the dominant class’ political interest. For explaining the contributions of these two mythological perspectives in literary studies, I give conceptualize method of analysis using both of them. As concluding remarks, I position Barthes’ mythological thinking as a theoretical framework which can avoid literary studies from over intervention of outside-literary factors political economy, general theories, etc. that make the studies seem losing their narrative base. Because Barthes’ perspective emphasizes on reading of narrative dynamics without negating exploration of discursive richness in signifying process, naturalization of ideological discourses, and ex-nomination of particular political interest.AbstrakTulisan ini membahas pemikiran mitologis Roland Barthes serta implikasi metodologisnya dalam kajian sastra. Inti dari pemikirannya adalah bahwa dalam beragam moda representasi berlangsung dinamika penandaan mitis yang menggunakan penandaan denotatif sebagai basisnya dan bertujuan menyampaikan pesan tertentu kepada pembaca ataupun penonton. Penandaan tersebut berjalin-kelindan dengan kompleksitas wacana, sejarah, pengetahuan, dan permasalahan dalam kehidupan nyata. Tujuan akhirnya adalah untuk mendepolitisasi dan mengeksnominasi menjadikan sesuatu tak bernama kepentingan politik dominan dalam narasi secara alamiah. Barthes juga mengkonseptualisasikan gagasan tentang mitos kedua yang menggunakan mitos (pertama) sebagai basis proses penandaan untuk mensubversi kepentingan politik kelas dominan. Untuk menjelaskan implikasi metodologis kedua perspektif mitologis tersebut dalam kajian sastra, saya mengkonseptuliasikan metode analisis dengan menggunakan keduanya. Sebagai simpulan, saya memosisikan pemikiran mitologis Barthes sebagai kerangka teoretis yang bisa menghindarkan kajian sastra dari intervensi berlebihan dari faktor-faktor di luar sastra faktor ekonomi-politik, teori-teori umum, dan lain-lain yang menjadikan kajian tersebut tampak kehilangan pijakan naratif. Karena perspektif Barthes menekankan kepada pembacaan dinamika naratif dalam kerangka penandaan tanpa mengabaikan eksplorasi kekayaan diskursif dalam proses penandaan, naturalisasi wacana ideologis, dan eks-nominasi kepentingan politik partikular.

Abstract

Artikel ini, dengan orientasi konseptual-teoretis dan metodologis, akan membahas cairnya kuasa budaya dan negara dalam struktur naratif sastra, dengan menggunakan pendekatan poskolonial. Narasi sastra bisa diposisikan sebagai produk representasi yang menghadirkan subjektivitas cair, berupa tokoh naratif dan wacana partikular, terkait permasalahan sosial-budaya, khususnya hibriditas kultural. Kehadiran modernitas dan berlangsungnya praktik budaya tradisional dalam masyarakat pascakolonial menyebabkan timbul permasalahan tersebut. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa subjektivitas cair, di satu sisi, bisa memunculkan wacana emansipasi untuk memberdayakan masyarakat lokal dan, di sisi lain, bisa memunculkan resistensi terhadap kuasa berbasis budaya tersebut. Oposisi biner antara Barat dan Timur menjadi sangat cair, karena subjek poskolonial bisa menggunakan pemikiran modern untuk mendekonstruksi keutuhan modernitas maupun keutuhan budaya tradisional. Namun, ketika negara menerapkan neoliberalisme, subjektivitas cair dan hibriditas kultural perlu ditafsir-ulang. Kuasa budaya tradisi dan negara akan mendapatkan pemaknaan-baru dan resistensi; karena prinsip kebebasan individual dalam hukum pasar menuntut kehadiran minimum kedua entitas tersebut. Kondisi itu memunculkan peluang untuk mengkritisi dan memodifikasi kajian poskolonial.Kata kunci: struktur naratif, subjektivitas cair, resistensi, kajian poskolonial, neoliberalisme
