Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this study was to look into the speech comprehension impairment of the schizophrenic main character in the Words on Bathroom Walls movie. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. It is concerned with the description of data in the form of the schizophrenic's utterances. The findings of the study demonstrate that only six of the eight types of schizophrenic speech comprehension impairments exist. The types of speech comprehension impairments noticed in Adam were weakening of goal, poverty of speech, looseness, peculiar logic, distractibility, and perseveration. The TLI (Thought and Language Index) theory by Liddle (2002) was used to make this classification.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to identify the types of slang words and analyse the meaning of slang words. The data were taken from a movie entitled Ride Along 2. The data were collected through observation method which the technique is documentation, in order to find the movie script, select and classify the types of slang words. The data then were identified to find the types of slang words using the concept of slang proposed by Chapmann (1988) and the concept of meaning proposed by Leech (1974) was used to analyse the meaning of slang words. The data were discovered that there were 20 data of secondary slang dominantly used in the movie and 12 data of primary slang were not used as much as the secondary slang. After discovering the types of slang words, the meaning of slang words then were analysed and found that 17 data of connotative meaning used more dominant. Several meanings of slang word are found and mostly expressed by someone who tries to express the feeling or emotion of getting mad or surprised. Slang words mostly contain a certain domain such as violence, crimes, and sexuality.

Abstract

This study is entitled “Illocutionary Acts in the Movie Entitled All the Bright Places. Two problems of study are formulated, specifically types of illocutionary acts used in the dialogue of the main characters in All the Bright Places movie and the context of situations used in the dialogue of the main characters in All the Bright Places Movie. The script of All the Bright Places movie served as the research data resource. This study used observation methods and note taking as a technique of collecting data. The steps of collecting data were to watch the movie, read the dialogue script in order to find the types of illocutionary acts and context of the situations of All the Bright Places movie, grouping the types of illocutionary acts and context of situations that were found in the movie script based on Searle’s (1979:12) theory and Leech’s (1983:6) theory. The findings show five types of illocutionary acts found in the dialogue of the main characters in All the Bright Places movie. From the analysis, there are data of representative illocutionary acts, data of directive illocutionary acts, data of expressive illocutionary acts, data of commissive illocutionary acts, and declarative illocutionary acts is not appearing any single time in the script of All the Bright Places movie. The purpose of context of situations is to consider the situational factors such as the speaker, the listener, the setting, and the cultural background, in order to accurately interpret the meaning of illocutionary acts in conversation.
