Abstract

Foot care behavior is essential to prevent the risk of diabetic foot ulcers among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The sociodemographic predisposing factors had determined mainly behavior. The study aimed to analyze sociodemographic factors' effect on foot care behavior in people with T2DM. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample size was 130 respondents, with multistage random sampling. The instruments used were a questionnaire. The results showed that most of the respondents were 56-65 years (45.38%), women (62.31%), married (86.15%), basic education (46.15%) and income level were less than the district minimum wage (56.92%), Madurese (54.62%), nuclear family type (46.15%), and had foot care behavior in the good category (71.54%). Income level was the sociodemographic factor significantly affecting foot care behavior (p=0.019). Respondents with low-income levels (less than regency minimum wage) showed poor foot care behavior. At the same time, other sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender, marital status, education level, ethnicity, and family type, did not affect foot care behavior (p-value > α = 0.05). The higher the income level, the better the foot care behavior. Providing diabetes education to increase awareness of diabetic patients about foot care is essential to paying attention to sociodemographic conditions, especially income levels. Good foot care behavior can reduce the risk of diabetic foot ulcers, minimize morbidity, and improve the quality of life of people with T2DM.

Abstract

One of the complications of diabetes mellitus is diabetic retinopathy. The results of the research conducted to determine awareness and knowledge about diabetic retinopathy showed that awareness and knowledge about diabetic retinopathy were not satisfactory. Knowledge and awareness about diabetic retinopathy are needed to reduce visual disturbances due to diabetes mellitus. This research was a literature review using three databases, namely Google Sholar, PubMed, ProQuest, and Dimensions, and was published in 2017-2021. A total of 11 articles with a cross-sectional design met the criteria. The results show that the shortest duration of diabetes is one year, and the longest is >10 years, there are more male respondents than female respondents, and the age range is between 18-88 years. Knowledge related to diabetic retinopathy shows the poor result. Factors that influence knowledge are age, gender, religion, ethnicity, income, education level, occupation, marital status, diabetes duration, type of diabetes mellitus, patient perception, knowledge of systemic complications, and previous experience of visual impairment. Sources of information are from health staff, friends, or family of fellow sufferers and the media. Good knowledge is influenced by internal factors and external factors related to how to form a mindset and make decisions. The source of information obtained is used as a reference for knowledge and behavior formation. Providing education can be applied to increase patient knowledge about diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract

The major complication of diabetes mellitus that needs special attention at this time is diabetic ulcers. Diabetic ulcers on the feet can reduce the quality of life and cause death. A lack of knowledge about foot care can cause this. In addition to controlling blood sugar levels, people with diabetes need education about foot care that is applied independently at home (foot self-care). This service aims to enable participants to understand and implement foot self-care to prevent diabetic ulcers. The educational method is given by lecture. Community service activities are carried out in four stages: education, discussion, question and answer, and evaluation. Participation partners involved are the Gucialit village community, totaling 25 people. Characteristics of the participants indicated that the gender of the majority of participants was male, totaling 17 people (68%), dominated by late adulthood, totaling 15 people (60%), and the majority were farmers, totaling 22 people (88%). The service results show increased knowledge about foot self-care to prevent diabetic ulcers before and after being given education. Further education on foot self-care can be given using a simulation method so that people can practice it directly.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy patients have different perceptions about how to take care of themselves. Some have a negative perception of dealing with their illness, which can cause the patient to become depressed, it affects the patient in controlling blood sugar levels, so increasing risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The negative illness perception causes the patient's lack of awareness to check his eye condition regularly so that it can affect the patient's health condition. This study aimed to analyze the illness perception in patients with diabetic retinopathy at RSD dr. Soebandi Jember. Method: This research was quantitative research using a descriptive design. Respondents in this study were 34 diabetic retinopathy patients obtained by the total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) and analyzed using univariate data analysis. Result: The results showed an average value of illness perception was 51.44 (SD = 16.85), indicating that diabetic retinopathy was still considered a threat by the respondents. The indicator with the highest value is concern, while the indicator with the lowest value is treatment control. In this study, patients perceive their disease as a threat due to a lack of knowledge about diabetic retinopathy, symptoms of the disease, and patient concerns about their disease. Conclusion: The patient's illness perception needs to be formed to overcome the disease because it can impact the patient's health. One factor influencing illness perception is knowledge because patients with good knowledge can implement the information they have to maintain their health. Providing health education about diabetic retinopathy is needed to improve the patient's perception of the disease.

Abstract

Living with diabetes can lead to various psychosocial problems that affect health and the ability to manage diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that must be managed every day by patients, causing increased stress. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and diabetes distress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional method. The sample in this study was 84 type 2 DM patients. Sampling was carried out in this study using a non-probability sampling technique using consecutive sampling. Self-esteem is measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), while diabetes distress is measured using the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS). Data analysis in this study used the Spearman rank (rs) statistical test. Respondents in this study had low self-esteem, as many as 51 people (60.7%). The diabetes distress respondents were in the moderate distress category, as many as 43 people (51%). Based on the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant relationship between self-esteem and diabetes distress in type 2 DM patients with a correlation value of -0.548, which means that the direction of the correlation is negative with moderate strength. This shows that the higher the self-esteem of type 2 DM patients, the lower the diabetes distress experienced. Nurses are expected to think about psychological aspects by providing counseling interventions to patients to increase self-esteem to reduce diabetes distress experienced by patients.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that can harm the body, both physically and psychologically (stress). DM patients will carry out adaptive coping strategies to properly manage treatment or therapy. The process of self-empowerment in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus will appear when they have information or knowledge about the disease so that it can influence the patient's self-skills for further treatment. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between self-empowerment and coping strategies in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The design of this study was an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional method. The sampling technique used is consecutive sampling. The sample of this study was type 2 DM patients with 84 respondents. The instrument used in this study is the Diabetes Empowerment Scale-Long (DES-LF) questionnaire and the Cope Inventory questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Spearman test. Self-empowerment and coping strategies in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients showed close to maximum results. In the results of the study, it was found that there was no significant relationship between self-empowerment and coping strategies in type 2 DM patients with p = 0.086. It means that other factors can influence coping strategies. Health services can educate patients about the importance of coping strategies for DM clients so that they can reduce the impact of DM disease

Abstract

Patients with diabetes can affect cardiac output, such as blood pressure dysfunction. Changes in insulin resistance and hyperglycemia can lead to blood pressure dysfunction and increased cardiac output problems. Warm compresses affect macrovascular function and impact blood pressure in patients. This study analyzed the effectiveness of warm compresses in reducing blood pressure in type 2 DM patients with decreased cardiac output problems. The study used a case report method. Warm compresses were applied for three days, for 2 hours per day, using a warm water sack placed on the abdomen at 40-42°C. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention. Results showed that after 3 days, there was a reduction in blood pressure, with an average decrease of 16.667 mmHg in systolic and 6.667 mmHg in diastolic pressure. Warm compresses effectively reduce blood pressure in patients with cardiac output problems. Nurses can apply warm compress therapy as a simple intervention to improve blood pressure in patients with decreased cardiac output.
