Abstract

Background: The surface roughness of orthodontic arch wires is an essential factor that affects the effectiveness of arch-guided tooth movement. Metal wires exposed to the oral cavity environment are susceptible to corrosion. The corrosion process cannot be stopped but can be inhibited using natural inhibitors that contain antioxidant compounds, such as tannins found in avocado seeds. Tannins in avocado seed extract can act as a corrosion inhibitor through two working mechanisms, a passive layer and an adsorption process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the viability of avocado seed extract as a corrosion inhibitor on the surface characteristic of orthodontic wires. Method: This research is an experimental laboratory research.  A total of 48 orthodontic wires (stainless steel, nickel titanium, and Titanium-Molybdenum Alloy (TMA)) were prepared and divided into control and treatment groups. The treatment groups were immersed in avocado seed extract at concentration of 1.5 g/L (T-1), 2 g//L (T-2) and 2.5 g/L (T-3) for 7 days with twice daily immersion of 1 minute each. A TR 220 surface roughness tester (ΔRa) was used to evaluate surface characteristic. The data was analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test followed by post hoc LSD test with a significance value of p-value < 0.05. Result: The average surface roughness increased in all control groups except for stainless steel wire which did not show a significant difference with p-value = 0.716. Furthermore, the difference test between groups on each wire showed different results. Conclusion: Avocado seed extract is effective as a corrosion inhibitor for orthodontic wires.

Abstract

Background: The increase in the elderly population leads to a decline in their health and affects the productivity and quality of life. Preventive measures must be taken to improve oral hygiene for the elderly starting from the pre-elderly group so that later it will form healthy and productive elderly. One of the efforts to improve dental hygiene and health is through mechanical tooth cleaning with a toothbrush. However, currently, there is no toothbrush design that is suitable for the condition of the pre-elderly oral cavity. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the design of the number of toothbrush bristles as initial research to obtain an appropriate toothbrush design for the elderly. Method:The study was conducted on 30 participants using a toothbrush with a number of toothbrush bristles paths: with 4 paths, 3 paths, and 2 paths. The effectiveness of tooth brushing hygiene was measured through the debris index before using a toothbrush and after brushing. Result: The results of the Kruskal Wallis test showed a significance value of 0.01 (p

Abstract

Hypertension among young people in Indonesia has become an increasingly alarming public health problem due to lifestyle changes, low awareness, and limited access to preventive health services. This review aims to analyze the challenges and strategies for controlling hypertension in young populations based on national and international literature, supported by bibliometric analysis. Data were obtained from the Web of Science (WOS) database and analyzed using VOSviewer to map research trends, keyword relationships, and collaboration networks related to hypertension in youth. The 2018 Riskesdas data showed that 34.1% of Indonesian adults aged ≥18 years had hypertension, with major risk factors including obesity, excessive salt intake, and lack of physical activity. Despite extensive healthcare coverage, blood pressure control remains inadequate. Globally, Indonesia’s prevalence mirrors developing countries such as China, India, and Nigeria, driven by unhealthy urban lifestyles and poor treatment adherence. Key challenges in managing hypertension among adolescents include low awareness, misconceptions about antihypertensive therapy, limited healthcare access, and unhealthy habits such as poor sleep and irregular diet. Sociodemographic factors, psychological stress, and family history also increase vulnerability. To address these issues, comprehensive strategies are recommended, including early screening, community-based health education, lifestyle modification, and integration of national and international initiatives such as Posbindu and WHO’s HEARTS program. Strengthening health promotion from adolescence, improving blood pressure monitoring, and optimizing follow-up systems at primary care level are essential for long-term control. This review concludes that a multidisciplinary and youth-centered approach, supported by bibliometric insights, is vital to prevent hypertension and its complications among Indonesia’s young population.

Abstract

The release of ions is the initial stage of the corrosion process in an orthodontic wire. Continuous release of ions can reduce the effectiveness and performance of the orthodontic wire. Continuous release of ions in CuNiTi orthodontic wire can change the properties of the wire and trigger hypersensitivity reactions, also in stainless steel orthodontic wire which experiences continuous release of ions can reduce its stiffness. The tannin in avocado seeds is useful as a corrosion inhibitor it can inhibit the release of ions because they are able to bind with metal ions and form a passive layer also able to bind with Fe ions in stainless steel orthodontic wires to form a passive surface layer which is able to inhibit the release of ions when the corrosion process occurs. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of avocado seed extract as a corrosion inhibitor on the release of metal ions from CuNiTi and stainless steel orthodontic wires. Rectangular CuNiTi and stainless steel orthodontic wires measuring 0.017 x 0.025 inches were taken in 3 groups (1 control group soaked in artificial saliva and 2 treatment groups soaked in avocado seed extract). The samples were soaked in avocado seed extract with a concentration of 1.5 g/L and 2 g/L for 7 days. To see the release of ions, an X-Ray Fluorescence test is carried out. In CuNiTi orthodontic wire from the one way ANOVA test showed that there was a significant difference between the control group and all treatment groups on Cu, Ni and Ti ions. The Post Hoc LSD test showed that there were significant differences between the control group, treatment group 1 and treatment group 2 in Cu, Ni and Ti ions with a p value. In stainless steel orthodontic wire, the one way ANOVA test showed that there was a significant difference between the control group and all treatment groups in Fe and Ni ions but not significant in Cr ions in the ion release test with a p value <0.05. The Post Hoc LSD test showed that there were significant differences between the control group, treatment group 1 and treatment group 2 in Fe and Ni ions with a p value <0.05. Providing avocado seed extract with tannin content at concentrations of 1.5 g/L and 2 g/L can inhibit the rate of ion release in CuNiTi and stainless steel orthodontic wires due to the corrosion process.
