Abstract

The hotate clam (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) is one of the clam species that lives in cold-temperature waters with the largest production in the Japanese region. However, the sustainability of this aquaculture is threatened by various factors, including ectoparasite infections that can affect the morphometric profile of the scallop. This study aimed to analyze the impact of ectoparasites on the morphometry of hotate clams in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, and to inventory the types of ectoparasites found. Samples of 25 individual hotate mussels were taken using random sampling techniques and morphometric measurements were taken using Image-J software. Ectoparasite infestation was categorized into four categories: free, low, medium and high. Analysis was conducted using One-Way ANOVA and Fisher's Pairwise Comparison follow-up test (P<0.05), as well as hierarchical cluster analysis based on the Bray-curtis similarity index visualized in a dendrogram. The results showed that there were two types of ectoparasites, namely Polydora sp. and Barnacles sp., with the dominance of Polydora sp. which was found in 17 individuals. Some morphometric distances such as AD, AE, BD, and CE showed significant differences between infestation categories. The dendrogram showed that the 'free', 'low', and 'medium' categories had high morphometric similarity (0.987), while the 'high' category showed lower similarity (0.96).

Abstract

Microplastics are pollutants of emerging concern today. The presence of microplastics in fish from several marine environments has been reported worldwide. This study examined the presence of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the Kiper Fish (Scatophagus argus) from the Segara Anakan Lagoon, Cilacap, Central Java. Microplastics were found with an average abundance of 22.22 ± 6.8 items/ind. Fragment (45%) was the main type of microplastic found in the analyzed Kiper fish, followed by fiber (27%), film (21%), and pellets (7%). Eight types of colors were found in the analyzed fish, with black (43%) and transparent (33%) being the predominant plastic colors. There were 12 types of microplastic polymers found, namely Polystyrene (PS), Nylon, Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Cellulose acetate (CA), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polypropylene (PP), Polyurethane (PU), Latex, Acrylonitrile butadiene stryrene (ABS), High-density polyethylene (HDPE), Polyethylene telephthalate (PETE). The results of this study indicate that more serious attention must be paid to the handling of plastic waste, given the accumulation of high amounts of microplastics in fish, which can be harmful to human health.

Abstract

This research specifically observes the duration of valve opening and closure in three different size classes of juvenile mussels (Perna canaliculus) over a 60-minute period after exposure to the microalgae Isochrysis galbana. Current study would like to understand this behaviour as a precursor to using flow cytometry (FCM) to accurately measure the juvenile mussels' filtering capabilities under the FCM set up. There is still limited information on the use of experimental set up of flowcytometry on measuring the filtration of the juvenile mussels. Two factors used in the experimental set up; i.e. the size class of juvenile mussels, and the observation time (T1- T60). The results indicated that both mussel size and observation time significantly influence the proportion of time valves remain fully open, with juvenile mussels generally exhibiting different behaviour patterns (such as more crawling). Current study also measure the clearance of the microalgae, which shown the larger size class of mussels exhibit higher cells clearance compared to the smaller size of mussels. Ultimately, the study concludes that while valve observation indicates filtering, further refined methods are needed to ensure FCM accurately measures the actual particle removal capability. Keywords: Juvenile mussel, valve opening, valve closure, filtering behaviour, flow cytometry.
