Abstract

Pesantren, as a traditional Islamic educational institution, not only transfers religious knowledge but also instills moral and social values that are in line with the principles of compassion, justice, and concern for others and the universe. The yellow book, as the main source of learning in pesantren, has a major role in translating the values of Rahmatan Li al-Ālamīn into daily life practices. Through the teaching of fiqh, tasawuf, and other teachings, students not only understand religious theory but are also taught to practice these values in their social interactions. The application of the concept of Rahmatan Li al-Ālamīn is also reflected in social life in pesantren, where students are taught to live together in harmony, help each other, and respect differences. Social activities carried out by pesantren, such as providing assistance to the community, show that this value of compassion applies not only to relationships between individuals but also to relationships with society at large. In addition, literacy in yellow books also makes a big contribution to the development of the character of students, by teaching moral and ethical values that are in line with the principle of Rahmatan Li al-Ālamīn.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between educational background, learning motivation, and academic achievement in the Maharah Kalam (speaking skills) course among 2023 cohort students of the Arabic Language and Literature Department. The study was conducted in response to challenges in Arabic speaking proficiency, where students often understand the material but struggle to respond to questions or comments from lecturers or peers. The Maharah Kalam course is designed to enhance students' speaking abilities. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method, with a population of 207 students and a sample of 104. Data collection techniques included surveys, interviews, questionnaires, literature reviews, and tests. The questionnaire covered aspects of educational background, learning motivation, and academic performance. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation with the help of SPSS software. The findings show a weak but positive correlation between learning motivation and academic performance (r = 0.246; p = 0.012), suggesting that increased motivation is associated with a slight improvement in performance. In contrast, the correlation between educational background and both motivation and academic performance was very weak and statistically insignificant. The R-value of 0.291 indicates a weak overall relationship among the studied variables. The combined contribution of learning motivation and educational background to academic performance was 8.5%, while other factors influenced the remaining 91.5%. This research contributes to an initial understanding of factors influencing speaking skills achievement. It is recommended that instructors develop more interactive and contextual teaching methods while considering non-academic factors such as learning environment and student self-confidence to enhance Arabic speaking proficiency effectively.

Abstract

Elderly education represents a critical yet frequently overlooked component of lifelong learning, essential for improving the overall well-being of aging populations. This study investigates how Madrasah Ibnu Mas’ud (MIM) in Malaysia implements an integrative educational model designed to address the spiritual, social, and physical needs of elderly individuals. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, data were gathered through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Findings reveal that MIM effectively integrates Islamic religious teachings, including Qur’anic study and hadith, with practical daily activities such as congregational prayers, religious discussions, light physical exercises, and structured social interactions. These comprehensive programs significantly enhance the spiritual growth, physical health, and sense of community among the elderly participants. By balancing religious education with physical and social activities, MIM mitigates common elderly issues such as emotional isolation and social disengagement. This integrative model demonstrates substantial potential for improving the holistic quality of life for older adults. Consequently, this research provides valuable implications for Islamic educational institutions, underscoring the necessity of inclusive elderly educational programs that simultaneously nurture religious fulfilment and physical well-being.

Abstract

This service activity aims to improve the capability of local tour guides in buffer villages in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) area. One of the locations chosen by the Service team is Wonokitri Village, which is located close to the tourist destination of Mount Bromo. Based on the results of field observations, there are several problems why Wonokitri Village is only able to survive as a 'transit village' which is indicated by the low occupancy of tourists staying at local guest houses. This is due to the low communication skills of local tour guides to attract both domestic and foreign tourists to stay longer in Wonokitri Village. In fact, based on the narrative of local residents, they are trying to develop other tourist objects that are expected to be able to support the local economy. Through this service activity, the Proposing Team arranged a series of mentoring and training activities for members of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency. The service activities consist of first, training in communication skills for tour guides and tourism actors (owners of guest houses, stalls, and souvenir sellers). Second, assistance in making social media as a promotional media, branding as well as local tourism marketing. Finally, thirdly, English language skills training in the context of tourism for tour guides and other tourism actors. The outputs of this activity are publications in the mass media, activity documentation, scientific articles presented at national seminars, and scientific articles published in accredited national journals.

Abstract

Misyar marriage is a controversial alternative marital form within contemporary Islamic discourse, particularly concerning its legal validity and alignment with the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah). Imam Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leading figure in modern Islamic legal thought, addresses this phenomenon in his work Zawāj al-Misyār Ḥaqīqatuh wa Ḥukmuh. This article seeks to examine the epistemological foundation of al-Qaradawi’s view on misyar marriage to understand the structure of his legal reasoning and methodology. This study specifically focuses on the epistemic foundations underlying Yusuf al-Qaradhawi's views on the practice of misyar marriage, the ijtihad method used, examining the authoritative sources that are Yusuf al-Qaradhawi's main references, and his approach in combining normative texts with contemporary social realities. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, employing content analysis of al-Qaradawi’s primary work, especially Zawāj al-Misyār Ḥakīkatuh wa Ḥukmuh. The analysis is conducted within the framework of Islamic philosophy of knowledge, emphasizing the integration of epistemologies. The findings reveal that al-Qaradawi constructs his fatwa through an integrative approach responsive to modern realities, employing takyīf fiqhī as a contextual ijtihad tool. His epistemic foundation combines scriptural authority with maqāṣid-oriented reasoning, producing legal opinions that are both normatively valid and socially constructive. This contributes significantly to the development of a adaptive contemporary Islamic legal epistemology and maslahah.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using picture media in Arabic language instruction to enhance vocabulary (mufradat) memorization skills among seventh-grade students at MTs Sirnamiskin. The research employs a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. A total of 31 students participated as the research sample, comprising 22 males and 9 females, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using vocabulary memorization tests administered before and after the intervention, as well as through observation and documentation. The learning intervention involved integrating picture media into Arabic lessons across two cycles, focusing on the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The findings indicate a notable improvement in students' vocabulary memorization abilities, with the average pre-test score increasing from 60 in the first cycle to 70 in the second cycle, and the post-test scores rising to 75 and 85, respectively. Students showed higher engagement and retention when vocabulary was introduced through relevant and visually appealing images. The observations further confirmed increased participation and enthusiasm during lessons using picture media. In conclusion, the use of picture media proves to be an effective instructional strategy in Arabic language learning, particularly for enhancing students’ ability to memorize mufradat. It is recommended that Arabic language teachers incorporate picture media into their teaching practices to support more engaging and meaningful learning experiences at the secondary school level.

Abstract

The epistemology of Sufism, as a bridge between rational knowledge and spiritual experience in Islam, has long fascinated Muslim thinkers. This research reveals the complex layers of thought of Ibn Arabi and Al-Ghazali, two Sufi figures whose thoughts have resonated throughout the centuries. Through in-depth analysis of their monumental works, this study reveals how these two figures navigated the sea of ma'rifah (intuitive knowledge) on different ships but headed to the same port. Al-Ghazali, with his kashf compass, sailed carefully between the currents of the Shari'a and reality, while Ibn Arabi, with his Wahdat al-Wujud sails, sailed a wider horizon, embracing the winds of Greek and Bathiniyah philosophy. This research not only maps their spiritual routes, but also explores how the knowledge maps they drew are still relevant in the navigation of contemporary spirituality, offering a new compass for seekers of meaning in the modern era.
