Abstract

This training was held at Universitas Harapan Medan which is located at Jl. Imam Bonjol No. 35 Medan. Based on the results of observations carried out by the service team, several problems faced by students at the university were obtained, especially those related to English. Most of them still don't dare to communicate in English and are still passive when there are activities or competitions held by the campus, such as English debate competitions. English language experts consider English Debate to be very effective when applied to improve speaking. It is hoped that students will be more enthusiastic about participating in English debate training if it is combined with video blog (vlog) media. Video media is a type of audio-visual media. This media can increase students' interest in learning because students can listen and see pictures. Service activities are carried out in three stages. The first stage is the preparation stage. In this stage, the service team carries out a preliminary survey to see the conditions in partners and also look for problems faced by students, especially in terms of English. The next stage is the stage of implementing community service activities. The final stage is the evaluation stage. In this stage, evaluation is carried out on the results achieved by the training participants. Further input and improvements can be made at this stage. Evaluation is provided by collecting data obtained from training activities.

Abstract

English communication skills are a crucial competency for tourism students in response to the growing demands of the global tourism industry. Nevertheless, many students continue to experience challenges in using English effectively for professional purposes. This research aims to examine the enhancement of tourism students’ English communication skills through the application of a Cooperative Project-Based STEAM learning model. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, involving tourism students as participants. Data were gathered through English communication skill assessments, observation checklists, and questionnaires. The instructional activities were carried out through cooperative group projects that integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) elements into authentic tourism-related tasks. The findings reveal that students’ English communication skills especially in terms of speaking fluency, vocabulary mastery, self-confidence, and collaborative abilities showed significant improvement following the implementation of the learning model. In addition, students demonstrated positive attitudes toward cooperative and project-based learning. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Cooperative Project-Based STEAM learning model effectively enhances English communication skills in tourism education and may serve as an alternative approach in English language instruction.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened new pathways for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) pedagogy, particularly in the acquisition of technical vocabulary. This study aims to investigate the integration of ChatGPT in enhancing students’ morphological awareness of tourism-related technical terms. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two groups of tourism students: an experimental group that used ChatGPT-assisted learning and a control group that followed conventional dictionary-based methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests focusing on morphological decomposition and word formation tasks, complemented by semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in identifying derivational affixes and understanding compound words specific to the tourism industry. ChatGPT provided personalized, real-time linguistic explanations, thereby facilitating deeper cognitive processing of complex terminology. The study concludes that AI integration not only enhances morphological competence but also promotes learner autonomy. These results suggest that ESP practitioners should strategically incorporate AI tools to bridge the gap between theoretical linguistics and professional communication in the field of tourism.
