Abstract

ABSTRACT One characteristic of adolescents is their tendency to share information, tell stories, and gather with their peers. They may experience the negative effects of these habits when they do not have adequate life skills, especially in terms of sexuality. On the other hand, these activities present an opportunity for health promotion through peer-based approaches or peer counseling. The goal is to know the effects of peer counseling methods as media of information to increase adolescents’ knowledge and attitude regarding sexual problems. The study used a quasi-experimental approach with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 17 respondents between 15-24 years old living in Banguntapan, Bantul, Yogyakarta who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected with the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. The results showed that there was a difference in the average knowledge level (p = 0.021) and attitudes (p = 0.000) of respondents related to sexuality before and after receiving peer counseling training. Methods and media used in delivering health information to adolescents should be diversified in schools, in the community, and in health services to generate interest in accessing and heeding appropriate health information. Keywords: peer counseling, sexuality, adolescents, health promotion

Abstract

Introduction: The survey reported that adolescents experienced severe depression (15.6%) and extreme stress (6.3%) in Warungboto, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In fact, with this condition, they are reluctant to access mental health services. Adolescents' skills still lacking in problem-solving and inadequate social support are thought to be the triggering factors for low access to health services. Aims: to determine the social support for adolescents in accessing mental health services. Methods: This type of research is quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach. The unit of analysis is adolescents (15-24 years) who are identified as having stress and depression based on the results of early detection of mental health. The sample size is 36 teenagers, with a total sampling technique. The variables are family support, peer support, mental health status, problem-solving, and self-control measured in the questionnaire. Meanwhile, mental health status was assessed using DASS-21 and PSS-10. Results: There was a significant relationship between social support from family (p-value 0.001, 95% CI 1.581-76.551) and peers (p-value 0.018, 95% CI 1.108 – 2.608) with adolescent mental health status. Adolescents with depression and stress are very few who get good social support from their families in accessing mental health services. This study proves that family social support is a significant factor in accessing mental health services. Conclusion: Family involvement in overcoming adolescent mental health problems is crucial. However, health providers can also provide community-based mental health services with a peer approach.

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of depression among children under 15 in Kulon Progo Regency reaches 6%, while emotional and mental disorders affect 8%, with only 9% of affected individuals receiving adequate treatment. Parental behaviour influences the utilisation of mental health services for adolescents, shaping how service needs are assessed. Limited mental health resources and negative parental attitudes further exacerbate adolescent mental health conditions. Aims: This study aims to evaluate parental attitudes toward access to mental health services for adolescents. Method: Using a cross-sectional design, a total of 107 biological parents of adolescents aged 10 to 24 years were selected using purposive sampling. Result: This study finds that perceived severity, perceived threat, and cues to action significantly influence parental behaviour in seeking mental health services (p < 0.05). While 57% of parents reported inappropriate use of services and perceived no benefits from them, 51.4% acknowledged no access barriers. However, only 49.5% demonstrated strong self-efficacy, and 53.3% failed to take timely action. Conclusion: The findings underscore the need for interventions that equip parents with practical knowledge and skills to obtain appropriate mental health services for their adolescent.
