Abstract

Fish transport workers in Indonesia lift loads more than the specified limits, both in weight and frequency. This could cause lactic acid accumulation, fatigue and reduced physical performance. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of stretching intervention on muscle tension, fatigue, strength, and lactic acid level in fish transport workers in Indonesia. A pre-experimental study design with one group (pre- and post-test) design was conducted among male fish transport workers at the Tawang fish auction, Weleri, Central Java, Indonesia, in June 2022 for two weeks. We created a 1.5-minute stretching exercise video based on the University of New Castle's Manual Handling guideline, involving hand, feet, and shoulder movements. Participants performed these exercises independently before and during work every two hours, guided by the video. Data on lactic acid, muscle tension, fatigue, and strength were collected before and after the 2-week intervention. Data analysis was performed using Wilcoxon and paired Student t-tests to compare the outcome between post- and pre-intervention. A total of 18 fish transport workers were included in the study. The results showed a statistically significant increase in lactic acid levels following the intervention (p=0.016). However, the increase in muscle tension was not statistically significant (p=0.292). There was a significant increase in fatigue levels after the intervention (p=0.000). This could suggest that the stretching intervention may have had an unintended effect of increasing fatigue among the participants. On the other hand, there was a statistically significant decrease in muscle strength after the intervention (p=0.003). In conclusion, this study suggests that while stretching exercises can affect lactic acid accumulation, fatigue, and muscle strength, they do not influence muscle tension. Therefore, it is advised for workers to incorporate stretching exercises into their daily routine to mitigate potential injury risks.

Abstract

The informal sector is currently experiencing a more rapid growth process than the formal sector so that it becomes one of the pillars of the Indonesian economy. One of the industries engaged in the informal sector is gudeg processing. Processing gudeg is a workplace that has a hot climate that comes from the furnace to cook gudeg. In addition, other influencing factors are individual factors in the form of age, increasing age can cause workers to become easily tired. In addition to age, the working period of workers varies, some have been in work for a long time or not. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of individual characteristics on fatigue of gudeg processing workers. This research was conducted through quantitative research, the method used was cross sectional research which was used to determine the effect of the independent variable and the dependent variable. Data collection was carried out using a Reaction timer, Subjective Self Rating Test (SSRT) from the Processing Fatigue Research Committee (IFRC) and sheet respondent's questionnaire. The statistical test used was univariate test and bivariate chi-square test. The results showed that there was no influence between age, gender, and years of service on work fatigue.

Abstract

Posture while working will influence work results and have a health impact on workers. Rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) is a method for analyzing work posture on the job using the upper part of the body. This research examines the risk level of work postures in the leather shoe industry. This research was conducted in the leather shoe industry located in Semarang. This research uses the RULA method to assess the risk level of work postures. Body area measured by RULA was divided into two groups, namely group A (arms, forearms, hands) and group B (neck, body). The RULA score is obtained based on observing the worker's body posture, including neck, arms, back, legs, and load. The observed scores are then converted into final RULA scores. It was found that the body posture of workers in the leather industry was at a score of 6 and 7. This score has implications for the need for further research regarding the body posture of the following workers. Work posture correction must be done immediately to prevent further health impacts.

Abstract

Introduction: Traffic accidents remain a pressing global issue, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with higher mortality rates, socio-economic burdens, and persistent policy implementation challenges. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to identify global trends, conceptual developments, and critical knowledge gaps in road safety research, with a focus on LMIC contexts. Methods: A total of 402 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2014 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus database. Bibliometric coupling and co-word analysis were conducted using VOSviewer to explore research dynamics. Results: The analysis identified five thematic clusters: (1) gamification and technology integration, (2) behavioral insights and interventions, (3) risk perception and training, (4) equity and infrastructure design, and (5) cyclist crash risk mitigation. Global trends show increasing attention to digital tools such as virtual reality, machine learning, and simulation-based training. Conceptual developments include integrating behavioral science into traffic safety and designing inclusive infrastructure. However, critical gaps persist, particularly the limited representation of LMICs in the literature, lack of contextual adaptation, and minimal real-world validation of technological solutions. Conclusion: This study underscores the need for a multidimensional approach that unites technology, human behavior, and infrastructure improvements. Strengthening research in LMICs, validating emerging tools in real-life scenarios, and fostering cross-sectoral collaborations are key to reducing global traffic injuries and fatalities through evidence-informed policies.
