Abstract

Globalization has ushered English language teaching (ELT) to a radical shift which results in the incorporation of post-humanist paradigm in ELT. Ironically, however, this paradigm has not been thoroughly considered in ELT in periphery contexts where sociocultural-semiotic symbols as language materiality abound. In this article we consider language materiality as part of cultural materiality and social life which highlights transmodal elements a key concept in parallel localization within communities. The present study examines how the indigenous Dayak community in Kalimantan, Indonesia, utilizes materiality and transmodal production in EFL classrooms to facilitate knowledge construction through interactions with diverse objects, symbols, and resources. An instant ethnography was employed to capture transmodal moments, such as from writing to speaking, video to text, or speech to action, which result in dynamic transformations and expansions of meaning in the multimodal discourses classroom to students who have not previously learned English in their primary school. Multimodal Conversation Analysis (MCA) was used to analyze the data, which revealed that materiality is a transmodal production that encourages students to create meaning via their own lenses. As the students immersed themselves in the phase-by-phase engagement with semiotic symbols related to their English classes, the result shows that they improved their communication skills, comprehension, and access to knowledge. Based on their understanding of English, the knowledge they gain provides them with the opportunities to think critically. Furthermore, transmodal through materials can be applied as sources for students to make meaning.

Abstract

Tencel fabric has characteristics similar to cotton fibers but possesses the durability of synthetic fibers. It is produced using environmentally friendly technology. Tencel is made with the solvent NMMO (N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide), which is recyclable up to 99%. This fabric is derived from cellulose fibers or regenerated cellulose fibers. The advantages of tencel include good absorbency, luster, and tensile strength. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and soaking time in the mercerization process during the finishing preparation of tencel fabric, focusing on weight reduction, absorbency, tensile strength, dimensional stability, and fiber morphology. Tencel is known for its easy fibrillation in wet conditions and significantly high tensile strength. Previous studies have shown that alkali treatment can enhance absorbency and luster. Mercerization was carried out with variations in caustic soda concentration at 7, 9, 11, and 13 °Be and soaking times of 30, 45, and 60 seconds. The results showed that higher caustic soda concentrations and longer soaking times led to decreases in weight, tensile strength, and dimensional stability. However, absorbency increased up to a certain concentration before declining again. This is also influenced by changes in fiber morphology due to the mercerization process using caustic soda. The optimum point was determined using a ranking and weighting method based on test results and evaluation of tencel fabric. The optimal mercerization condition was found at a caustic soda concentration of 9°Be with a soaking time of 45 seconds, yielding a weight reduction of 4.07%, absorbency of 4.5 cm/2 minutes, warp direction tensile strength of 6.34 N and weft direction of 7.5 N, and dimensional stability of 6.8% in the warp direction and 2.4% in the weft direction.

Abstract

Sea water intrusion is a process where sea water is mixed with underground water around the coast, causing the ground water to become salty because it is contaminated by sea water which is rich in salt. Sea air that enters the ground causes the air to become unfit for consumption and causes the land to become unproductive for planting. People in the Pakis Jaya area, Karawang face difficulties, especially regarding land use for agricultural activities. This is because the land used for cultivating plants is saline soil with a high salt content. Phytoremediation is a method used to clean air or soil contaminated with pollutants, by using the ability of plants to absorb these substances. Cynodon Dactylon and lolium Perenne Brightstar plants are a type of grass that can be used to reduce high salt levels in the soil because these plants are able to live in places with high salinity and also have the ability to reduce salinity by absorbing chloride ions in it. The methods used in this research consisted of: Sampling Process, Plant Acclimatization Stage, Salinity Concentration Test before and after planting grass in Soil Media. The test results showed that the salt content in the soil before planting was 19.20 dS/m and after planting it was 0.02-0.03 dS/M.

Abstract

Beyond Language Barriers: How Translanguaging Shapes Pedagogical Practice and Students’ Identity In Japanese Higher Education. Objective: This research addresses the critical challenge international students face in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) environments regarding the construction of conceptual knowledge and academic access. Drawing upon Social Constructivism, this study reframes translanguaging not as a linguistic deficit but as a pedagogical resource that supports student agency. The primary aim is to investigate the perceptions and functions of translanguaging among Indonesian undergraduate students in Tokyo, Japan, and to explore its connection to effective meaning-making and academic integration within a superdiverse educational context. Methods: This research employs a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, which is well-suited to capturing students’ lived experiences and providing in-depth insights into how they scaffold conceptual understanding and negotiate collaborative tasks. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured, one-to-one online interviews with three Indonesian undergraduate participants, focusing specifically on their use of multiple languages during academic work and social integration processes within the university. Findings: The findings reveal that all three participants actively utilize translanguaging mixing Indonesian, Japanese, and English as a cognitive scaffolding mechanism to secure conceptual clarity and achieve epistemic access to complex disciplinary knowledge. Crucially, translanguaging functions as a pedagogical tool that enables effective collaborative meaning-making and the negotiation of academic consensus during group work. Furthermore, the practice is closely linked to greater academic confidence and the successful negotiation of their identity within the institutional environment. Conclusion: This study particularly contributes by indicating that translanguaging is a vital tool for learning that ensures academic opportunity and success in superdiverse higher education environments. It goes beyond negotiating identity to state that schools ought to officially recognize and include translanguaging practices in their curriculum and student support services. This is very important for making an environment that is genuinely welcoming to all students and helps them succeed, as well as recognizing their full linguistic and intellectual potential. Keywords: translanguaging pedagogy, english medium instruction, identity, academic equity.
