Abstract

Semi-mechanical sago processing uses using sago rasping machine to disintegrate pith instead of manual equipment while other stages still use traditional ones.  The objective of this program was to apply semi-mechanical sago processing to the sago farmer in District Masni, Manokwari Regency.  The program consists of several activities i.e. construction of the sago rasping machine, transportation to the partner community location, semi-mechanical sago processing under supervised by the implementing team, semi-mechanical sago processing by the partner independently, monitoring, and evaluation.  The results of this program showed that the application of semi-mechanical sago processing by sago farmers (partner community) was able to increase sago starch production capacity from 382 kg/week to 764 kg/week.  The sago starch is packed using plastic sacs or baskets made of sago leaf called tumang about 20 kg each package. The price of one package (1 tumang) of fresh sago starch was IDR 150,000 and the partner produced 38 tumang/week, therefore partner’s income from sago starch selling was IDR 5,700,000 per week.  Based on the target indicators, it is concluded that this program was successfully on target i.e. partners had already changed their method in sago processing from traditional to semi-mechanical, and production capacity as well as income was increased.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The quality of groundwater is significantly influenced by the mineral composition of the surrounding rocks and soil in the aquifer. High concentrations of minerals, particularly iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), can cause discoloration typically a yellow-brown hue and an unpleasant taste in the water. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different filter media arrangements in a filtration column on the reduction of Fe, Mn, and turbidity levels in well water. The natural filter media used include sand, gravel, palm fiber, and activated carbon, arranged within a filtration column model. Water samples were taken from dug wells in Sowi 2 Village and a drilled well in Susweni, Manokwari Regency. Initial characterization of the water samples included assessments of odor, color, turbidity, and Fe and Mn concentrations. Results indicate that during the rainy season, well water from Sowi 2 meets clean water quality standards based on pH, turbidity, and Fe and Mn content. However, the drilled well in Susweni exceeds acceptable limits in terms of color and pH. Filtration using the designed column and selected natural media effectively reduced Fe, Mn, and turbidity. Turbidity reduction reached 100% in both column A and B. Fe concentration was reduced by 78.53% in column A and 73.55% in column B. Mn concentration was reduced by 76% in column A and 65.45% in column B.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the water quality of the Mako-Mako River based on physical, chemical, and microorganism parameters, as well as the effect of metal and microorganism levels on the color of the water and sediment. Water, sediment, and plankton samples were collected using purposive sampling at three locations: upstream, middle, and downstream. The concentrations of Fe and Mn in water and sediment were analyzed using AAS, while plankton identification was performed using a binocular microscope. The results of the water quality analysis of the Mako-Mako River show that the parameters of temperature, TDS, TSS, and Mn are still below the water quality standard for class 1, except for the Fe and total coliform parameters, whose concentrations have exceeded the standard. The metal content of Fe in the sediment is high and affects the color of the Mako-Mako River sediment, which ranges from reddish-brown to dark brown (deep). The presence of plankton, with a low abundance and diversity index, did not affect the color of the river water or the sediment of the Mako-Mako River. Therefore, a processing treatment is needed to use the Mako-Mako River water as a source of clean and raw water.
